I thought Khirin was highly ranked at Texas A&M last year.
We don’t have any room to add anyone else right? I know we added Maddy in December last year.
UNC currently has a roster of 13, three over the roster limit. So the assumption is that there are three of walk-ons still on the team who grandfather in as roster exceptions until they graduate. (In NCAA terminology, these are referred to as “designated student athletes.)
to be clear, anyone on the current roster, including freshman who just enrolled, could be DSAs.
It may be possible we have four DSAs but that seems highly unlikely to me. Note that UNC used to be able to give out 8 scholaships and we had 11 women on the roster last year. Logically that means three were walk-ons, unless we doled out less than 8 scholarships last year.

Seemed like a pretty good start. Frey continues to play very strongly, Evans was pretty dominant, Khirin had a top-10 win.
Probably pencil in Evans, Khirin, Frey, Zampardo as clear starters. 5/6 is between Hamilton, Rabman, and whichever of the Nguyens is better? Does Boyce have a chance to crack the lineup?

Should be a pretty good lineup.
Khirin looks like a stud and should be highly ranked. Think she was in the top 10 at Texas A&M one year. Our 5/6 spot should be a lot stronger than most teams have.
Frey will have to hold her own at the #3, but she has it in her.

Today was first round of the qualifying draw. As usual, the ITA websites are sort of a mess, and limited format info. But I believe that our 4 winners today need to win one more tomorrow to make it into the Main Draw. Believe Evans is already in the main draw, as you said.
Frey had already won 3 prequalifying matches, as did Rabman and Zampardo. I thought it was a bit of an insult that Frey had to play that, given her play last year.

Thanks for the clarification, I did not realize there was a main draw above this qualifying draw that created another re-seeding.
These college tennis coaches should be embarrassed. Paying money for professional tennis players. To win in sport barely anyone cares about.

How are college tennis teams getting money to secure pro players?
There are donors who support the program.
Now you have to pay to secure the top players/recruits/transfers.
People don't understand that Olympic sports are no different than the revenue sports. Everyone wants to win but certain coaches take it to different level.

Paying International players is actually a little difficult. Due to education visa restrictions they cannot do work, and "work" in the NIL world eliminates social media posts, signing memorabilia, , appearances, etc... They have to remain totally passive. Like putting their name in an advert or their face on a product. Or the booster who wants to give them money has to figure out how to funnel money through a company in their home country so that "work" is not done in the USA.
Over the last few years the lawyers and agents have learned to navigate this as obviously these ringers are getting paid. But I don't think the pay is actually all that great. Here is the more significant change:
So now the young players with a UTR above 11.00 don't go directly to the pros only, they come to the USA and play for a college team for 4 months out of the year. Ironically, it is the Brantmeier v NCAA court case that makes this business model possible.
It is worth noting that these benefits apply to USA prospects as well. Would Frey have forgone her social media and endorsement money to attend UNC in the old, Pre-NIL model? There are just tons more international ringers than domestic ones.

- Reese Brantmeier won her lawsuit against the NCAA and college players can now keep pre-college tournament winnings with some limits on during college tournaments winnings.
- College coaches let their international ringers enter minor pro tournaments 8 months out of the year, only holding them to college matches for the spring through the NCAAT. (and even then they can get leave if they qualify for a significant tournament early spring.)
- In the NIL era, players can sign equipment manufacturer deals and keep social media earnings.
- Coaches sell the elite facilities, free coaching, free training, free physio, travel, free legal aid, free branding/NIL training, etc... subsidizing their entry level pro aspirations.
- Maybe sweeten the pot with a low five figure NIL deal. (my guesstimate). This is how an Auburn can differentiate itself from UNC. My bet is you can probably buy competitiveness with maybe $100K - $200K total across your roster. Just a guess; I could be way off.

I think this is really good having 4 in the main draw. Kudos to Nguyen for winning two matches and justifying her bye into the Qualifying draw (ie the top 80 seeded players….all behind that had to be in prequalifying). And kudos to Frey for winning 5 matches in dominant fashion. Straight sets all matches, 23 games lost in the 5 matches.
As for the international ringer discussion, just one additional point is these are not players that are choosing college over full-blown, top-level WTA tournament schedules. Their choice is versus personally-funding a satellite tournament schedule where the goal is not to make a profit but to build up enough points to move up to top-level tournaments. They have to pay for room and board, coaching, training facilities, travel. It’s probably not a gigantic investment but when it’s coming out of a family’s pocket, every dollar counts.
Playing college can reduce those expenses a lot and all they have to do is play the spring schedule like 3397Char said. And putting $15k-$20k per semester “salary” on top of that is probably very meaningful relative to the dollar amounts we are talking about.

Khirin won and will play at Noon today trying to punch her ticket to the national tournament. The other 3 who lost are in the consi’s and would need to win 5 matches (I believe) to be Consolation finalists and get a berth to Nationals.
In Doubles, we went 2-2. Zampardo / Maltby are in main draw Quarters and a win today would get them into Nationals. Rabman / Manning still alive in Consolation draw.

When have a freshmen and a sophomore playing great right now. They are going to continue to get better. I am liking what I am seeing. The upper classmen are doing what they are suppose to do. Go Heels!
Right, I don’t think this will be a rebuilding year like many thought it would.
Feel like the back end of the starting lineup will be particularly strong.
I am person #1 who said this was a rebuilding year and harped on the flood of semi-pros coming in. But We have three women who played better than their past starting this summer who make us more competitive than I had anticipated. It is still early but this should be a top 10 team.
I believe your comment came before Nicole committed, so that was probably fair.
Having a true stud at the top of the lineup changes everything.

dook should be ACC #1 in my opinion with recent additions. State and UVA will also be contenders. It is surprising how far Stanford has fallen; I thought they would be an immediate rival year after year with UNC for tops in the ACC and the country.
But 5 SEC teams and Ohio State make the national scene tougher than ever.
I was not including Khirin. Frey and Evans had great summers and early play, and Alexis Nguyen has come in and immediately produced. I think the X-factors will be Hamilton and Rabman. If they can find previous form this team will be really deep with potential winners everywhere.
