Sorry but going a little crazy listening to the discussion on KSR about the poll situation. Matt is incrediulous that we should be ranked ahead of A&M based on the last game and making the case that if we beat them we should be ahead of them. And the discussion keeps going in circles about how its not fair and how the pre-season polls are just somebodys guess . . . NO DIDDING!!!!! What does he think POLLS are?????? Of course they are just OPINIONs. The whole thing is a conglomeration of folks OPINIONS.

Everybody gets caught in the trap of treating the polls like some scoring system where if this happpens then that should move this team up this many notches and if that happens then this team should drop this many notches, otherwise ITS NOT FAIR!!!! There is not fair or not fair to it, its an OPINION POLL!!!

And its not just based on a win or loss or even sometimes two or three wins or losses. Its a combination of the performance on the field plus what the voter thinks of the potential and strength of the teams beyond what actually happened on the field that given day. For example yes we beat A&M soundly at their place last week and it was nothing but an impressive performance. But we didnt have that same performacne the week before against a team ranked lower than A&M. So you have to give credit to the most recent performance but you also have to ask was this just a a good day for us and bad day for them or are we really that much better than A&M. If we played them 10 times would the result come out this way 7 times? 8 times? 4 times?

What Matt is falling into the trap of is thinking nothig matters but the result of the moment which is the definition of microwave thinking.

The poll voters IMO should be trying to evaluate a new power ranking each week and taking into account not just actual performance but which teams are overperforming for the talent and ability and which have yet to hit their stride yet too.

If you just base it off outcomes of a game then shouldnt Western Michigan be ranked the same as Michigan?

Just makes me crazy to hear discussions about the fairness of polls, they are OPINION polls and thats that voters OPINION. You can disagree with them but theres no fair or unfair about it and its not based on the most recent outcome. Its not a score board that moves teams up or down a certain amount each week based on scores, its a subjective weekly re-evaluation of each voters power rankings based on their opinion of that teams strength.

Yeah, just for bragging rights and they often throw a Coastal Carolina type team in there as a feel good cinderella to basically virtue signal. One writer did have us at 17 and another article I saw somewhere had us in the Birmingham bowl though no one has a clue. The playoff poll is about the only one that matters as the voters typically have the eleven best teams and Notre Dame playing for the NC.

The preseason poll is filled with bias and misinformation and wrong opinions. So, the games should be used to clean that up. For me, the poll is where you sit RIGHT NOW and should not be some prediction of where you might be come the end of November. That said, any team in the first few weeks that losses to an unranked team should not be ranked. Michigan won, but they were rightfully dropped from the poll unless you think WMU should be ranked. If UK manhandles TAMU in College Station and UK is not ranked and will not be ranked on your poll, YOU CANNOT rank TAMU. Let the process work. If TAMU can get it back, let them work that from the outside in, rather than assume they should be in. IDK if UK should be ranked but I agree TAMU should not be ranked if UK is not ranked. They played at home. They should be outside trying to earn their way back in.

Anybody that thinks UK should be ranked ahead of A&M because we beat them is showing poor logic.

Example:
It's the last game of the regular season and team A is 11-0 and ranked #1. They lose to 0-11 team B. Team A falls to #8. Should team B move up to #7 in the rankings?

Yeah I think the main point is when most pollsters do their rankings they are basing it off their opinion of power rankings not a score card or peg board of who moves up or down a certain number of spots based on a particular performance or who DESERVES what. Thats taken into account of course but so is what the pollsters think a teams remaining potential is based on talent etc and all that. Thats what the pre-season poll is to start with because its based on who seems to have the best team going in. The weekly polls after that are just a reset of that each week.

I think the problem is you have some pollsters treating it as a Power Ranking and others treating like a score card of who deserves what so the missmash is a mess sometimes. Someone needs to ask the poll managers what are they asking the pollsters purpose supposed to be. It is a power ranking of who they think are the strongest teams, or is it a who deserves what based on a particular performance.

However, it's not the last game of the year. We have both played 3 games. They beat Arizona St, but lost handily to us at home. We lost similarly to Alabama at home. but beat A&M on the road.

We have a better claim to be ranked higher since our loss is to a better team and our win is against a better team, except for the fact that the preseason ranking had them at #9 or whatever.

I don’t care where UK is ranked but that makes sense. The play on the actual field should be dictating by week 3 polls.

But the voters aren't supposed to be voting on who won heads up games; that's a matter of objective fact.
They're supposed to be voting their opinion on which is the better team overall, not which team was better on a given day. It's difficult for me to say somebody's opinion on the quality of a team or player is wrong, even when I think the person stating the opinion is an idiot.

I don't think Matt Jones really understands what he's talking about a lot of the time. I think he's only into sports for $. I don't think he actually believes half of his own takes.

You know it's a daily radio show, right? It's hard to find topics every single day to talk about that are going to be new and that are UK related. Sometimes you have to pull stuff out of thin air.

It’s pretty obvious you hate Matt Jones, doesn't matter what he says, you're going to hate it.

I'm not sure why so many people in this fanbase hate the guy. It makes no sense, it's a radio show, just don't listen, problem solved.

Seems like some people just hate seeing others be successful unless it's someone they approve of.

You consider that to be the same as two teams that are both 2-1 while one team has the tougher SOS and the head to head road victory? If the scenario was what you laid out no one would suggest we should be ranked ahead of them. I think aTm's current ranking is fair enough but UK should have moved up more.

I'm suggesting that those games are not enough to erase the questions some have about UK. If somebody looks at our football history and A&M's history and decides that was a fluke game and UK is still the lesser team I hope they're wrong but I can't say they are wrong...yet. These polls are opinions and opinions are influenced by the past and opinions also can change over time. If some voters are not giving Kentucky credit for being as good as they have looked on the field so far, that is just the nature of these things; win enough games we'll start getting more respect.

Yeah, it's not a very good comparison. But it's still an opinion poll on who the voter thinks is best and, unfortunately for UK, nobody has forgotten our football history yet. If some voter thinks our lack of depth will get to us in the end, leaving A&M a better team at the end, I hope he's wrong but he's not wrong yet.

He’s not wrong though.
No polls should come out until after week 3.
That gives you three games to accurately rank teams. By getting their ricks off on months of preseason talk and polls that make them money, they set themselves up to have to keep those preseason teams somewhat ranked high to save face.

it’s exactly why the committee doesn’t start until later in the season. But even they are influenced by those same polls.

if a poll started this week and you had to just rank teams on what they’ve done the first three weeks then Kentucky would be ranked ahead of AM. It’s common sense

All polls are meaningless now but for the playoff poll.

People have to have tiny numbers next to the names beforr november though so here we are.
Problem is those same committee members are influenced by those polls. No matter how bad that don’t want to be.

Truth is that you could say this for many teams until there is more head to head data. Alabama could be a top 3 team when only observing their second half stats for example.

The rankings are supposed to be for the current season not based on the past. You are likely correct that is a real factor for voters but it is reasonable to point out that is not a proper way to rank the current season. It should not be based on the past or what they anticipate about the future but should be based on what you have actually done during the current season.

Matt Jones is one hypocritical POS. I have listened to his KSR show for many years since I live out of state. Its basically only way to get info on our teams. Yesterday is a perfect example of him. He spent 5 mins spewing his TDS about about him attending the Texas/Texas A&M game calling him names and more. Never have I heard him mock brain dead Biden or Obama. My mother was 11 years old when the Nazis marched into her town in France and lined up most of the men they could find and executed them in front of her. So this POS started mocking Trump as hitler like so I called him out on X about it in private message. I explained to him on how offended I was about what he just said. So he blocked me over a private conversation. Like I said POS person.
I usually agree with what you post, you're one of the best on here but I'm going to disagree on this.

Him blocking you on twitter, doesn't make him a hypocrite, it's actually the only thing a guy like Matt can do, especially when the topic turns to politics. It does you (him) no good to go back and forth with someone on twitter, you're not going to change anyone’s mind, especially with politics.

The biggest thing I hate about politics, is the people that are hard right and hard left. Those people don't give an inch. If you're hard left, your side has never done anything wrong, but everything the right says/does is wrong and vice versa and the very last thing you should do, is waste your time going back and forth on twitter, it just turns into a worthless argument and MJ has been through this scenario a million times.

If you tune into Matt to get his political takes you are foolish. Matt won’t debate anyone over his opinions and generally just wants to use a platform created by UK sports to push a political agenda, when he is not talking sports. He could have never created the platform off his political takes. He simply is not smart enough or knowledgeable enough. Most of us are not. But, he did create a sycophantic following through UK sports. Not many have the way he has. That is the only reason anyone should listen to or follow Matt as a public figure.

He has never let people counter him on Twitter. And, if you offered him thoughtful insights into why his extremism is harmful or offensive, he would rather block you than seriously engage. That shows a lack of character, especially if someone explained why his comments were offensive. Very Trump-like of him to ignore the way he has hurt others. Hence lies the hypocrisy.

He works for ESPN. So, his Twitter is probably monitored to make sure he is properly aligned with the organization’s biases.

Think the committee has done a good job overall n 4 and 12 team playoff era.

They 100% got it right last year leaving notre Dame out.

I dont like that 2 cupcakes got in but rules were rules. They made updates this year to prevent that again fortunately.
