Lincoln Riley’s familiar reaction to Rutgers debacle should worry USC fans

Lincoln Riley classless post-game interview comments -
Most gallingly, "Riley referenced prevailing in a half-filled stadium against a crummy team whose coach may not make it to midseason".

"They couldn't stop the run with any reliability. They repeatedly gave up big plays to a quarterback who looked better suited to the Football Championship Subdivision level.

Reporters deserve their share of blame for hyping this team amid the usual devouring of cupcakes, but USC's lack of meaningful practice access prevented them from seeing many of these warts.

California Post? Who knew there was such a thing. Ben Bolch was the UCLA beat reporter for the LA Times until January 2026--maybe he should have stuck with the Bruins?

Sounds familiar too! Maybe Lincoln Riley is a younger and more successful version of a certain other coach in the Big Ten--on a downward trajectory. In the first 3 games, Lincoln cannot blame the new era of college football and NIL.

EDIT: "They surrendered 460 yards and two more touchdowns than Rutgers had managed against UMass – UMass! – on this same field just two weeks earlier."

It's cute and fun to do these things, and our own fans have been tracking UMass' performance against lesser opponents, but the transitive theory never applies in sports, particularly college football.

EDIT 2: Is Rutgers the USC of the East?

In all fairness to Riley (re: his thoughts on us at least), the unflattering statements here appear to be the columnist's. Riley's quote was:

"Listen, we're not going to take road wins for granted in this league," Riley said. "They're all hard."

Not that the columnist is wrong, exactly - a close game against us doesn't inspire much confidence with how we've looked - but Riley's comments were standard coach speak, no shade at us.

Talk about half filled stadiums. USC seems to have fewer fans than us with a top 12 team no less. At least we had a reason to not show up at the stadium

Riley's words were the ones directly quoted - the ones about not taking any conference road wins for granted because all games are hard, etc. The columnist was criticizing him for that coachspeak. I haven't seen Riley's full presser after our game but I would be very surprised if he said anything denigrating Rutgers, because (and this is what the columnist was getting at) it wouldn't reflect well on his team, given they only squeaked by us.
