Tories etrc The pitchfork crowd is out. Agree much to be upset about.

BUT terminating now is imprudent and wouldnt expect Zinn to do that if she's as built for the job as said.

The pitchfork crowd misinterprets my indication of letting this season play out. It's the judicious move and doesn't presuppose a result. Further, and most frustrating, is the absolute inconsistencies spouted many times in one post here repatyedly. As an ex, GS doesnt allow his coordinators freedom. When he does allow them playcalling and personnel, he is blamed for their foibles. He hasnt by all media accounts had sufficient NIL until this year and he is blamed for not fielding top tier talent. Yes it's a message board and well thought out positions are not part and parcel, but thrown out the bums isnt the only mantra if you have some perspective. Some have lived through 6 or more coaches and understand the inherent RU problems and see where the errors have been and are thry fixable. And could they get worse. Having an interim before Maryland and NW only soothes the keyboard can him clsss (and lets not foget all the threads pre season about records, prior issues and just plain setting up the argument for termination even before the seaosn has begun.)

Are the INT's fixable--we'll see.

WIth GS focusing on the D and personnle packages will things improve--we will see

DId the young receivers and rbs look good--yes yesterday.

Did the OL show improvement yes--

Was Umass a bad loss -yes but as it turns out it may just be a bad MAC loss and not a historic loss to an 0-16 team as this Umass is not that team.

Can the team beat a selection of Mary NW Neb MSU --we will see but thats the point we should see. To expect wins against SC and Indian a re foolish. Umass and BC were bad losses but there was a lot of newness and historically bad INT play. Again lets see where this goes. Everyone wants to win but some perspective is needed of what we have, how much opportunity we have had over the last few years etc. Letting it play out will make the choice onvious and all the planning needed can be occuring
The losses to UMass and BC are not just bad. They're inexcusable.

Coach 18 football teams over 3 decades (4 including the GA job in 89) and they have to name something after him (even if its not the field house lol). He was defo a key to getting stadium built and B1G membership. Longest employed coach in the oldest program . I read GS began the Scarlet Walk so I could see the Gregory Edward Schiano Scarlet Walk with a bronze axe. Chop like you mean it (except in the red zone)
lol this isn't middle school or high school. I know this board is infested with a lot of teachers and do nothing middle manager types (no judgement) but in the real world where accountability matters, he's going to be remembered for who he is; a shyyty coach that was smoke and mirrors

this board is a bubble, even at the beach club this weekend there is a group of former players and die hards and to the man, he needs to go and he's been a fraud. These guys have been his staunchest supporters. Quotes like, 'God was I naive', 'you were right all along' etc etc. People are angry; angry at his pay, his results, his nepotism, his smugness, and even some things I thought were ridiculous

oh and his contract with the country club and suits has been brought up on multiple occassions

grifter, that is how he's seen now

STOP…..it’s not a lump-sum payout….the money is there. Move on.
stop? lol sure thing boss. Sad as this is for us miserable fans, I would not want student parents or anyone else to pay another penny for this mess. Tuition is a somewhat reasonable $15.4 k, but fees are an insane $4k on top of that. RU athletics has to get its $70+ million dollar annual deficit under control before taking on 18M in debt, no matter what creative payoff schedule some message board Einstein comes up with to bury it.

here is my challenge to Schiano - If Rutgers loses to Howard, agree to walk away Friday night with no payout. Let the player decide. I'm not convinced this crew will beat Howard even if they want to, but it does not appear they have given up.

wow

and so the Greg just needs a chance narrative begins
Greggo in 7 years needs more chances but the guy who had been DC for 3 games doesn’t.

Schiano sucks as a DC. He was DC in our last bowl game and his D gave up like 600 yards. He’s awful.

Point #3 is a big reason some folks are hopeful about this team. USC fans are PISSED at the defense and complaining they are still soft. Gary Patterson was hired to fix that defense and the natives are restless. Keep in mind that USC's rush defense ranked #80 last year in yards per attempt. USC finished last season ranked #20 with a defense that couldn't stop the run and they know they will not be competing for a championship until that is fixed.

I agree with the sentiment you have to let the season play out. But I don't see many opportunities for wins. I posted last week the schedule was manageable enough for a 7-5 season, but that was starting the season with a 3-1 record instead of 1-3.

Howard W
Indiana L
at Maryland 60% L 40% W
at Northwestern 70% L 30% W
Michigan L
at Wisconsin 65% L 35% W
Nebraska 60% L 40% W
at Penn State L
Michigan State 60% L 40% W

I would increase the W%'s by 20 -- 25 if RU started the season 3-1. Rutgers has the #118 Rushing Offense at 116.3 yards per game as well as #118 in Rushing Yards Per Carry at 3.56 YPA against teams who finished in the bottom 3rd in run defense last year in FBS. It isn't getting any easier folks. It appears to me that 3-9 is going to be the ceiling.
I don’t feel we should “let the season play out.”

I appreciate the OP's attempt at a reasonable evaluation, but doing that on this board is like throwing a match into a puddle of gasoline.

Didn't read their reactions, since they say the same thing every single day.

The let the season play out vs fire him now - It really has nothing to do with $$$ or recruiting.

At this point, my opinion is that firing him right now does not solve anything. Our next coach- who we can grow into a national power with, is not out there right now. And if it is an up and comer- they are not in position to just take the job right now either and it still would not change anything.

As for money- if we need it, it really isnt that big of a deal. Keli will find it or eat it.

As for Greg- Saturday's game was either a glass half full or completely empty.

You can say- we held our own with number 12- USC who has gobs more money and name then us. OK great

The other side of that - this was the game that Greg had every chance to get his signature win and HE totally F-ed it up again.

That is where I sit. At least GS 1.0 won some big games- 2.0 can win a big one and he is now losing to teams well below us.

mandatory student activity fees, which cover about $11M-$13M of the athletic dept budget annually. Students (and their parents) have kicked in $138.1M since RU joined the B1G.
$17,250,000 in student fees to athletics in current budget, highest in Big Ten.

The current student activity fee at Rutgers University New Brunswick, for full-time undergraduates, is about $1500 per year or $750 per semester. It goes to a variety of things that include all student campus, facilities, activities, etc., etc., etc., and not just the athletic department. Not sure where you’re pulling this $4000 nonsense from (and it’s not paying for any contractual buyout anyway):

Will Rutgers fire Schiano during the season? You have the bye week after Indiana or wait until November is the reality of the situation. While I am highly pessimistic about how the season will go (1 -- 3 wins), RU has not been mathematically eliminated from making the playoffs. Expecting to be 1-4 after dropping Indiana, RU only has 2 ranked teams (Michigan and Penn State) on the back 7. A 7-2 B1G record could get RU in the B1G Championship because Indiana has Ohio State and USC, Ohio State has Indiana, USC, and Oregon, while USC has Oregon, Ohio State, and Indiana. With that said, an 8-4 Rutgers team playing for the B1G title will "prove to the world" the B1G is vastly overrated. Of course, RU would have to beat Penn State since they only have USC and Michigan (who has the toughest schedule) remaining.

I hope Zinn is doing her homework and preparing to make a change as you read this, it is possible for Schiano to earn his escape from the guillotine this year if he can turn the season around.

Straight from the horse's mouth, not @SS:

The Student Fee is charged to all full-time students at the New Brunswick*, Newark and Camden campuses to support a portion, but not all, student-centered activities including: student life, student government, recreation, health services, athletics, career counselling, tutoring and other programs that are integral to a vibrant student life and to successful academic careers.
These fees vary by campus and full-time or part-time student status.

Yeah no. Your AI better half is using 2024 numbers per semester.

Current fees for NB students is $4008 a year, as showing from the RU tuition and fees page

That # is TOTAL FEES….. “student activity” fees are only a portion of total fees which is why I showed the breakdown above.

nuts - that last thing you posted is just description of fees, no breakdown. The AI nonsense you posted earlier is wrong. It's 2 years out of date and that year it was $1474 per semester, not the year. Aside form that, ngas what the breakdown is. $4008 per year is too much when $13m of it is going to athletics. You are not going to convince parents who have recently paid tuition, anyone who pays state taxes, or anyone with a cable bill that this nonsense is not coming out of the wrong pockets.

OK, your original post was at $4000 per student per year was going to the Big Ten. That’s simply is not true unless you can show me otherwise. I don’t believe you’ve done that but I’m on the road so maybe I’m missing something.

Anyway…..I couldn’t care less about that TBH. Not my problem. My problem is getting a head coach in here who can actually win football games. Not to sound like a jerk or anything, but that’s the bottom line right now and this isn’t the kind of thing that is gonna stop us from firing this guy and paying his contract out over its duration.

The “we don’t have the money” narrative is ******** and has been put to rest by many.
Well I certainly hope that is the truth but I will believe it when I see it.

I know the school has all the cash it needs..but what it does with it i(how and where it spends it) is another thing.

Its not middle school but its not Ohio St or Alabama either. I don't even think of RU as a football school in the B1G sense. There has already been a lot of toleration for GS that would not have happened at the industrial programs. I am of the opinion that GS has had his run (and he also got somewhat sloppy ) but I don't throw the baby out with the bath. Greg did get a lot of things done when nobody else did. The stadium and academics we know about but people forget he handled Legrande situation very well and was in hospital every night after practice for weeks. He kept players from trouble and got them in NFL (I think Britt would have crashed and burned under another coach)

I like to check-up on coaches and players careers on WIki bios and Greg 1.0 really wasn't that bad comparatively. He was better than a lot of other BE teams .He could never beat WV but he won games and he was quite good coaching for bowls. I know there were players who would have gone off the hook if not for GS (Flood lost some as I expected). Alas Greg's resume took a hit with B1G play. Greg does too many goofy things that don't help (like letting punts roll while pointing at them) and he struggles to find lineman and muffs QBs .GS doesn't get the coaches other B1G teams get and that hurts in B1G. That and the awful offenses are why it would be good for a change but I Dont think his epaulets should be ripped-off his uniform and then kicked out of the fort like he was a villain of some sort.

Right now it looks like he finishes the season and then who knows? Its easier to live with devil you know than a new one. People seem to think a "big name coach" is just waiting to be called in but good coaches know recruiting and staffing are hard at RU. If RU looks competitive and fans keep showing-up then uni admins might like being careful and investigative about who they get. Ash was just paid off in 2023. To add GS and then have to hire a "mystery coach" might be too much like gambling., I'm a believer in the Indiana method.

"I came to Rutgers a boy and Coach Schiano turned me into a man. And he did that before my injury. I love him and the lessons that I learned playing from him. He was there every night when I was lying in that hospital, sitting bedside, reassuring me that everything would be okay.

I talked to athletic director Pat Hobbs about him several weeks ago. I explained to him who Coach Schiano was as a man and what he was like to me as a player. Hobbs wanted to know if I thought he could adapt to the players of today, and I reminded him that this was a man who was hired by two of the best championship-winning coaches in the business -- Urban Meyer and Bill Belichick -- which is all you need to know.

I’m still stunned by how this all played out, and the lies about him this week. To hear our former governor, Chris Christie, telling people that he wanted a private jet for personal use? That isn’t true. He wasn’t trying to get that so he could kick his feet up and lounge around. He has high school football contacts around the country now. He wanted that jet so he could recruit better players!

Eric LeGrand: My coach, Greg Schiano, can make Rutgers whole again

lol. I’m not going to babysit your reading comprehension further, but no I did not say 4000 was too going to the B1G. I said they pay 4008 in student fees, and since we joined the B1G, the amount that has gone to athletics is $138.1M, from the student fees.

on some level you are probably right someone will decide the frustrations of a pathetic bunch of loud fans will be worth sticking it to someone else. Just makes it harder to support at all.

This came from Gemini, so can't validate the exact accuracy...

Schiano Buyout Details
    • Firing Without Cause: If fired without cause, Schiano is owed 76.875% of the remaining salary on his contract.
    • Remaining Value: As of September 2026, he has three years and $22.5 million remaining, making his baseline buyout roughly $17.3 million ($17,296,875), paid biweekly.
    • Mitigation Clause: The buyout is offset by any future football coaching salary he earns, though he has no obligation to actively seek new employment.

The $17.3M is a contractual sunk cost (unless there is a contract breach-which is probably very unlikely). While it might appear financially prudent to retain GS on its face to avoid the cost of a buyout plus adding a new HC and Staff......when you actually look at the situation, retaining him might actually be more financially damaging to the AD given much higher fan apathy which will adversely impact attendance and donations even further (and accellerated), The formula that really needs to be understood:
  • negative $17.3M buyout for GS
  • minus - cost of new HC Salary
  • plus - the net of removing Greg's Staff and adding the new staff (guessing this will be a plus due to the current bloated staff situation)
  • plus - revenue increase based on attendance bump from the optimism that comes with a new HC
  • plus - revenue increase for concessions / parking etc from the attendance bump
  • plus - likely revenue increase from donations bump with optimism of a new HC
Not sure what the final numbers will be since we don't all have access to the data. But certainly the AD does and should also be able to project net forecast. This does not mean the new HC will be successful or not, but it's pretty evident that GS has run his course at RU and it will be up to Zinn to make it happen as well as control any adverse PR from her recommendations and actions.

Is a good recap, and I never wanted The Grifter here anyway, but it’s questionable whether firing him now or even at the end of the season would increase revenues. Expectations are already in the toilet new coach or not.

They will have to absorb the $ hit. Let’s pray that they can.

Seems like all those who logged many pre season posts against GS are happy for the losses to prove their point or support their personal feelings. Considering the small swath of volume posters who post nearly similar positions on a daily basis, it is hard to see if this is a majority or minority view. Knee jerk rules the day online, but running a business or overseeing a large department demands more than acting out to address hurt feelings, but rather some level of prudence considering the cost and imprt of the endeavor.

Stepping back and considering RUTGERS and not GS as an individual, there are relevant things for an AD to consider:

  1. The last 3 seasons were 7-6, 7-6 and 5-7. Much podcast air was spent on how a few plays could have tipped 5-7 to 7-5 or 8-4.
  2. The mantra pre season was GS never had NIL help and this is the first season with that and it wwas one to see whether improvment occurs over the season. It's 3 games so far and yes first two were not what was hoped.
  3. The opening 2 losses were bad, though UMASS may show that the loss was bad but not the historically bad loss initially thought (B10 teams have had periodic MAC losses). The listen to Portnoy crowd have locked in the loss as historic and facts don't yet confirm that. Losing last year to UMASS would have been historic. It is not clear whether 2026 loss is bad or unforgivable.
  4. The BC loss was not a good result, but they have some talent and we heard all day during the game their transfers from power 4 schools.
  5. Historically in 2.0, RU has won out of conference games. BC, VT 2x etc. The issue for an AD is whether these ar ebad losses with new players and new coaches getting used to many things OR a downward trend of the program.
  6. The USC game showed improvment and hard to draw from that a downward trajectory. Multiple chances to win against #12 is what would be hoped for pre season.
  7. The games against Maryland NW Wisky and Nebby will tell clearly an upward or downward trend.
  8. Nothing stops a search from occurring now, along with any fundraising or planning for contingencies which all good leaders should regulalry do.
  9. Termination NOW solves nothing but appeasing the volume poster crowd. PLus, there is no good choice for an interim and no reason to saddle Duff and raymond with the interim situation when they came back.
  10. A few games played out and the picture will become clearer, including the fight of the team. My hope is we don't have a rash AD looking to score shock value points without a plan in place. Plenty of time before the end for that if needed a few games hence.
  11. Being judicious is not message board usual fare, but is what's needed here --at this time. It will play itself out with a clearer picture in the games after Indiana. (Of course we will see posts that relish an Indiana blowout but many will still be pro RU front of jersey people whether they volume post or not).

Tldr;

Op thinks board members are being too hard on Schiano when in fact we have 18 seasons that say otherwise.

Saved you all some time.

People saying “we’ve gotten better every game” and “UMASS may not be as bad as people think” need to take a step back and listen to how absurd that is in the face of a $20M+ war chest and an extremely highly paid staff.

I think you and others are under estimating how much damage was done by the start of this season. The casual fans are gone. We’re the punchline of the college sports world again. And most importantly, we’re starting to lose even the most die hard fans to apathy. The stadium will be a ghost town and dominated by away fans the rest of the year. If you want to send a message to the fan base, you find the money and move on quickly so the narrative changes to Brian Kelly and other candidates.
