There is another point that needs to be considered in the different scenarios. Ole Miss' previous 2 drives were 7 plays eating 2:30 and 13 plays eating over 5:00 of clock. Ole Miss was moving the ball fairly well and could drain the clock after an LSU punt. On the other hand, I think a lot of people missed the fact the RU defense played very well against one of the best offenses in the game. USC scored 42, so we sucked right? Well, 21 of their points were created with only 48 yards of offense.
USC Offensive Drive Chart:
FG 12 plays, 58 yards, 5:30
TD 2 plays, 24 yards 0:35
TD 6 plays, 75 yards, 3:05
Punt 6 plays, 19 yards, 3:13
FG 9 plays, 61 yards, 1:15
TD 7 plays, 75 yards, 3:01
Downs 10 plays, 60 yards, 2:41
TD 5 plays, 24 yards, 3:04
END OF GAME 10 plays, 44 yards, 4:24
Yes, there were only 2 possessions (not counting them running out the clock) where they didn't score. If RU made the 1st down and scored the TD to tie, they would have to kickoff in a tie game with about 5:00 remaining. That still means that winning would either require a defensive stop or recovering an onside kick. A defensive stop would be a requirement to win the game.
