They should have told everyone on the O-line to wrap up their opponent and hold as if their lives depended on it. It would give the QB time to burn the clock before the safety. Just like this.... Or maybe the rule for that is different in college.
I just saw the stat that entering today teams who were leading with less than 10 seconds to play and had the ball were 1046-1. The only loss was when Michigan State blocked the punt of Michigan in 2015. Oof.

Actually, we might start seeing more of these “bizarre” and unexplainable plays given the massive hold gambling has on sports now. Maybe the NCAA/Feds can look into late game betting on this game to try and find odd bets. It’s how they caught that baseball closer

That’s not how you run that play. You run along the back line of the end zone and step out of the back of the end zone as soon as a defender gets close. My god we practiced that play when I was in high school in the late 60s.
FWIW, I’ve seen video showing that the Vanderbilt player timed his movements perfectly and was not offsides. Moot point but I just wanna go on record, I’m weird that way.

I 100% doubt there was any intent there, if only because there is just no way the QB could plan and execute that with the ball position, the time left, the oline would have to be on it, he'd have to fumble away from any teammate, etc. that if it were on purpose the odds that it would come out the way it did is out of this world.
