4th and one and a wildcat----That question need be asked. Bad play call. I would have been ok punting or going fo rit but no gimmick play just let Raymond work.

D substitutions were wild. Walker absent for most of second half---Allison in at all. 4 with longest leash ever. I wish GS would go back to micromanaging the D. I think he has set paramters, but let personnel and play calling with the dc as was with R smith. If anything you would the hc more rather than less involved seeing what has occurred through 3 games. That goes agains the blame it all and dont assess the reasons crown but the history speaks for itslef.

How do you come out the first two games and think 41 is the best option at lb--and Munn should start, and 4 should play always. So obvious how things changes when Walker Wright and the Rice transfer have played. The DC has made some very odd choices personnel and scheme wise. Many want to say GS does everything but the main thing was coach hiring which one can fault. In GS 1 and after RobbSmith we saw a more disciplined D we dont see now. That is indicia of the dc and def staff making those choices now. Today showed that with more discipline, edge containmnet and some other personnel choices, the team can be competitive.

Four of RUs top five tacklers were DBs - 54 total plays and the 4 DBs had 28 tackles (more than half) and I never like to see that, USC didn't have that problem.

RU had a chance and at least the game didn't look bad on TV.
USC is known as a terrible cross country traveler

Showing doesn't mean anything, you can show all u want but if you don't win it doesn't amount to anything

RU played better this week than last 2.
Some killer INTs & no takeaways on D.

Gutsy gutsy fake punt call.
Wildcat call was abysmal

We could be on a top plays of the week and not for NC state reasons.

Good game, but at this point we needs Ws not atta boy u tried hard today. 0-44 against ranked opponents- that won't get the team to consistent bowl games.

I was mad Greg accepted the penalty early on, RU got a RB for a 5 yard loss at least and he took at 10 yard penalty. On 4th down they scored. Which was like 5th down.
What play are you talking about? The BS PI called for them a 1st down.

This game shows that USC shouldn’t be ranked and Schiano is horrible decision maker. Next week I expect Oregon to blow USC out. Howard will keep things close.

I agree with you. This game just showed that USC is overrated.
Don't know they traveled over 300 miles and felt so confident that the team made a trip to NYC before the game and we still couldn't beat them. What team go sightseeing before a game. SMH

I was going to say something similar. They came in Thursday instead of Friday, which I questioned here in a thread on USC's travel. One of the more consistent things I have seen over my 60+ years of watching sports is that teams typically do poorly when they break their normal routine. So, they changed their routine, traveled 3 time zones, and RU was their "trap game" as they host Oregon next Saturday. These three things is the reason why I played RU in my "24 parlay" (Georgia -24.5 over Arkansas, Iowa State -23.5 over Bowling Green, Rutgers +24 over USC). This WAS a typical Schiano result. Had a chance to so something special, but fell short of the mark. This was EXACTLY what I detailed in my statistical analysis when he was hired for Greg Schiano 2. 11:30 minutes left in the game, RU down by 7 (35-28) 4th and 1 at the RU 24. I said to my wife, "He's going to be stupid enough to go for it here and that will basically seal USC's win". 5 plays later USC scores what would be the winning TD.

The title of Greg's biography should be something like, "Almost Relevant: The Greg Schiano Story".

It is inconceivable that RU leads the nation in interceptions. How can you keep a guy secure in his position after the first throw is an INT. Then you don't take him out after he throws a 99 yarder for the other team? How? How?

He had to go for it, Ole Miss ran the same exact play and got it, LSU went for it in a similar situation and succeeded. We did not execute, but going for it was the right call.

We aren't Ole Miss. Are you talking about going for it in the 4th in a tie game from the LSU 40 with about 9:00 remaining? That is NOT an equivalent situation. There is a big difference between defending 60 yards and 24 yards.

Have you noticed that when we get into a tight formation on 4th down the line doesn't get any push? We did that against UMass on the 1st possession of the 2nd half (much, much closer to your Ole Miss example), Lonergan sneak and getting pushed by some big uglies for no gain and a turnover. We did it at BC in the 1st and Surace gets stuffed. So we tried Raymond against USC who also got stuffed. RU had time to punt and play defense, but we chose to go for the loss. This is a glaring weakness of Schiano's. It is as if he gets frustrated and tries a brute force attack. I knew he would go for it from a tight formation and fail. Its like he hasn't learned that banging his head against a brick wall only gives him a concussion. When the line can't get a push in a tight formation, you need to spread the defense out to remove some defensive beef from the point of attack. "But this time I'm going to knock that brick wall down when I bang my head against it!". This is one of Schiano's weaknesses that he has always failed to learn from. It will end up working once out of about 10 times this year and that will inspire him to keep doing it.

FWIW: I am not someone who would be a conservative strategist. I would rarely settle for a FG inside the opponent's 5. A FG is less than half of a TD and firmly believe the saying, "The team kicking the most FGs will lose the game". Go for 4th and goal from the 4 and your opponent has a 96-yard field if you fail to score. You have a reasonable expectation of getting the ball back around midfield because they will likely be a bit conservative. Kick the FG and score 3 and your opponent has a reasonable expectation of starting from their 25 or better. Miss the FG and they start from the 20. Trailing by 7 with just under 10 to play is not a time to go for 1st down deep in ytour own territory. You could make the 1st down and still have to punt.

The defense stinks in all three games.
Alluded to it in the UMass thread I started, but they scored more against us then they did vs Stonehill. (I actually said Stoneybrook, who the heck is Stonehill?).

I was talking about LSU going for 4th and 4 on there own 31, granted it was later in the game but we were 4 and a foot - not even a yard - it was the right call but a horrible play which Ole Miss barely executed. We had a foot just line up under center and push.

I really do not understand our philosophy on these 4th and short calls, in each of our games. Why does 4th and 1/2/3 require a special trick play or weird formation that we never see otherwise? When it is 4th and 1, coach needs to dial up his best play that will reliably gain 1 yard. The highest percentage 1-yarder on the diner menu. Are you going to tell me the best, most reliable, may-as-well-be-automatic play to gain 1.01 yards in our entire playbook is 9 offensive linemen in a phonebooth direct snapped to the RB, that we've never seen before?

It's not time for a gadget play there.

It’s the right call if you have Trinidad Chambliss as your QB or Levitt.

Not a QB leading the nation in Int’s who can’t run.

Coaching awareness of personnel.

A lot of coaches will decline the penalty on even less yards losses. I could see if it took them out of FG range or something but it was first down! And they were deep.

I agreed with going for it on 4th and 1 foot, but agree with Sharrane that you need to spread the field, can't have all the bodies bunched up in the middle and try and run up the middle, sometimes you run into your own player's back it is so congested.
