Northwest 3A/4A Conference 09-18 Games

Interesting week in the Northwest:

3A 2-2 Mt Airy travels to 6A 1-3 Stephens
I will take Mt Airy to continue towards the conference battle as the Bears find a way to defeat St Stephens.

4A 3-1 North Surry travels to 3A and 1-3 Northwood
I did not see anything that told me Northwood would give much positive/successful effort towards a win against the Greyhounds.

4A and 2-1 West Stokes goes to 6A and 1-3 Statesville
I do not believe the 1-3 Statesville record is a fair reflection of the team. They lost on a last second field goal last Friday to 6A Alexander Central.
If West wins this game, then I would say they are the definite favorite to win the conference. Maybe even if the game is really a close battle.
I give the advantage to Statesville.

Forbush will handle Bye with no problem and no injuries.

3A and 0-4 Surry Central host 3A and 0-4 Trinity
I really hope Surry Central wins this game, if they have not called off the rest of the season due to deleted numbers, which is a rumored possibility I have heard.

3A and 0-4 East Surry goes to 5A North Forsyth which is 1-3
I did not see East Surry as winless at this point in the season, And I see them getting into the win column this Friday night. At least I hope they do.

Statesville, playing at home, noticed on West Stokes roster they only have 2 transfers from WS. The two from Parkland not on roster.

Well, what a bad night this was for the Northwest Conference teams!!!!
WELL, maybe ok for a couple.

Mt Airy went into 6A St Stephens and fought off an hour-long downpour delay, a really fired up St Stephens group and the 2nd or 3rd worse officiating crew I have seen in years! They (the officiating crew) were just plain lost most of the game.

Mt Airy did win 48 to 27, I believe it was, but the first half of this game was nothing close to a blowout. I am not sure what the missing ingredient is for St Stephens, but they are better than their record indicates, at least they were in the first half of the game. They have some players and they have some good speed.

North Surry, just when you think they have figured out somethings, finds a way to lost to a now 2-3 team.

West Stokes and Statesville turned out about the way I thought and predicted the game. Statesville has athletes, and sometimes they even find a way to show it. They did.

Surry Central gave as good an effort as their limited numbers and talent would allow and made it a game only to come up short.

East Surry did find themselves scoring points and defending well enough to break into the win column. I say again, I am surprised the Cardinals have not had more success this year. But the year is not over.

And finally, Forbush did not have any trouble with the Bye Team.

At the mid point in the season, if I view Mt Airy vs Mt Airy of the past 20 years, Mt Airy is good but far from great.
But if I view them against the team they have played so far this year, the evaluation is much kinder.

A very young Bear team gave Starmount the game (and yes Starmount had to take it and take it they did) and we had absolutely no business playing Jefferson Forest out of Virginia, a school with 3 plus times our student body and a Virginia powerhouse.

But with 2 wins against 6A NC schools maybe Mt Airy has a little more opportunity than I thought at the beginning of the season. Add to this that we are seeing several freshman and sophomores playing a lot and playing well. Mason is just plain good as a RB with over 1000 yards already this year.

As they get into conference play, just maybe Mt Airy continues to grow into a pretty doggone good team, peaking for the playoffs.
