I've had a busy week so this is the first time I've had a chance to ask this. And this is the first time I've seen this asked. But I'm not shocked to be honest because there's generally very little forward thinking by fans or by the VHSL.
But how will the power points be calculated as a result of the recent Varina/Oscar Smith tie? Is there an established protocol? Are there rules in place in the rare times that a tie now happens? Is there a statewide rule? Do the regions have their own rules? Will each team get half points and then opponents of these schools will now receive half points on the rider side?
Due to early season weather delays, maybe it's a good idea for the VHSL to show some leadership and offer directives on what the regions should do. Then again, I'm not holding my breath on this.
What isn't considered are the downstream effects of regional rankings. Is it a deal where they will come up with a policy mid-season and then apply it? Similar to rigging the regional pairings for a couple of recent state title games en route to getting a desired outcome affecting the integrity of the bracket?
Surely Varina will end up either 1 or 2 in Class 4 Region B and will truck Huguenot in the regional final no matter where it's played. And people will go, "See, it doesn't even matter in the first place." But Oscar Smith's region is generally a bit more nip and tuck. But it's not just about these two schools. It's about the opponents of these schools and how they can be affected by the slimmest of margins.
