Once the deficit starts and interest starts to compound, it will be become more and more difficult to solve. Its just like a high interest credit card that paying the minimum never works well on. The first place to start would be a balanced budget which would be a huge battle in congress. I suspect you would even have a difficult time achieving that the current "tax the rich" banter. Taxing more and more never seems to solve anything. It simply does not work to have a $7 trillion budget and $5 trillion revenue stream. Where are you going to find the extra two trillion to balance the budget? Can you tax enough rich people?
My wife and I have benefited from the tax cuts that were enacted and made law in the BBB. There is ample data to show their positive impact on the economy. What we know generally about consumer spending is if you give people a dollar for free they will spend two. I don't hear people complaining about now being able to keep more of their income which they are doing under the BBB.
Here is a search as to presidents and budgets. Each president is going to blame the ones before them and some of it is true just due to natural cause and affect consequences of borrowing huge amounts of money over time.
"The U.S. national debt has generally risen under most modern presidents, with notable increases during the terms of Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden, while rare periods of reduction occurred under Andrew Jackson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Bill Clinton. Sources vary on exact amounts, but recent completed presidencies show Obama with the largest nominal increase, followed by Biden and Trump's first term."
