He was always going to be a sitting coach, we tried for a bunch of top coaches that cycle, than we settled. Why didnt we just hire him for a year then find a new coach with a proper search?

You're really asking that? Let's forget the fact that he performed well given the circumstances in year one.

You think Pope or any coach would come here for a single year? Knowing it would only be a year in advance? No one would sign up for that.

"Hey man, we are only going to sign you for a year to coach and then we are going to do a proper search for a coach we really want."

Yk the funny thing about it is you will be able to say "given the circumstances" every year with pope

You know why, its because he cant create a contending roster, so its always "He did alright given what he has"

He got to a Sweet Sixteen after having to throw together a roster quickly, and had some massive wins along the way (and a few bad losses for sure).

The second year didn't go well - we all know that.

He is in prove it mode now, and most of us will want him gone if he badly underperforms.

You literally started a thread about Franck being out for the year and then admitted to making it up. Not to mention, no one believes you’re a UK fan.
Could also be one of the regulars using a side sok. I'd bet on it. Seems like a Rival fan wouldn't think too much about Mark Pope on a weekday morning in September.

I agree. However, I think he may have to over perform a little next year to keep his job.

Beating a dead horse here but some folks just can’t help but to conflate year 1 and year 2. Year 2 was a disaster. I think we can all agree on that.

Year one had a couple of clunkers even when healthy but they could also beat anyone in the country. I thought they were fun to watch. Sometimes injuries actually matter and losing your two PGs and your emergency PG (Robinson) and you’re starting a freshman Perry, it kind of matters.

I think the conflation comes from the records being similar and that’s all they see. UKBBNever sees zero difference between the two for goodness sakes.

Went from flying around Hurley and his wife to hearing Mark Pope is the new head coach of Kentucky mens basketball. Talk about instantly realizing the school youve been a fan of your entire life is a joke these days.

We all knew. Instantly. Sure we all gave him a chance but we shouldn't have. Should have done what A&M did when they hired Stoops. But we dont have that kind of mentality because the people in charge don't.

We had Mitch. Other schools leaders are going to bat for their programs and wanting wins for their programs. You would think UK was harvard or something but isn't UK one of the easiest schools to get into? Just kind of suck these days unfortunately.

We paid BYU $6mil to buyout Popes contract. He wasn’t an interim hire!

May issue is if we were going to roll the dice on an unproven guy, why not go for a younger guy who had won at a mid major? Fact is we overpaid for a 60% winning coach with zero ncaa tournament wins.

Yeah, I was on board until I read "badly underperforms". He needs to, by his career standards to date, overperform to keep his job.

yeah the guy who was paying players yeah i bet the uni would've loved that

And? He wasn't doing anything other people weren't doing and are definitely doing now. Other Universities are hiring him and vetting him. Let's ease up on overusing the Indiana "we lose the right way" compass when moving into the future. Plus, Barnhart has been thrown into ditch. Who knows at this point.

I thought it was hilarious and exactly a sign of the time that there were actually people arguing that Pope is a better hire then Miller would have been LMAO. An AI search asking for their profiles to see that Pope is nowhere in Millers class (way, way off) was just a whisper away. But let's keep doing stupid.

“Sign of the time” 🤣

Because two people thought Pope would be better than Miller? We could have hired Donovan or Hurley and there would have been more people griping about that. Always been that way. Some hated Pitino WHILE HE WAS HERE. But hey, let’s keep doing stupid.
