Two Brits attending Rutgers for our first ever football game

Alright lads/ladies!

Myself and a childhood best mate (both 31 and have somehow ended up working for the same company) grew up in the midlands in the UK - and we have always had a bit of a dream about going to college football game. On October 3rd we get to make that a reality for the Indiana game.

Any game day tips or recommendations you’ve got are fantastic but also if anyone is willing to let two clueless Brits gatecrash a tailgate we’d be very grateful. We’re happy to show up with beer and Leicester City football merch to give out.

We’ve got an Airbnb in New Brunswick so we were just intending to get the free bus in that we’ve been told runs?

Gonna get in nice and early - Old Queene had been recommended a lot.

Definitely map out where you'd catch the bus, others can probably help with that. Where in New Brunswick is your Airbnb, near which campus? That will give us some more info. In case you don't know, there are 5 distinct Rutgers campuses around New Brunswick.

Last year took my wife's good friend from childhood (wife was Air Force brat) and her daughters from Worchestershire. They were amazed at the whole spectacle from, tailgating, to the boardwalk, to face painting, to the game atmosphere. They said, "no wonder why football is so popular in the States, it's like an all day carnival".

You will have a fantastic time at the Rutgers tailgating scene. The game is going to be ugly but at least if you wear a red T-shirt you can likely just blend in with either fan base.

Saw Vinnie Jones, international footballer, play many times for Wimbledon. Cheapest way to see the Premiership back in late 1990s.

Brought English friend to Rutgers football game and he called WRSU after the game and after many beers and asked ridiculous questions. The WRSU guys handled it well.

There is a very cool canon on the field that fires when Rutgers scores. Since that may not happen this game, you can catch it before the start, at the half, and the merciful end of the game. It may not be the only thing fired on Saturday. The canon operators are wearing colonial military gear, a nod to a little history. Rutgers was founded 10 years before the US, and the first official military celebration of independence day was ordered by Washington with a round of canon fire along the banks of the Raritan. After all, George scored big time. Washington also ordered the first tailgate on the banks, with an extra ration of rum for each soldier.

Hey if you find yourselves near the Greek Church on River Road stop in and see us on the patio. We are spot 8 and usually have a good tailgate. It is still early so we have not planned the menu yet.

Congrats, you're about to experience a game at the Birthplace of College Football. Don't let posters on this Board legitimately disappointed with early season results ruin your experience. My advice, arrive as early as possible and search-out the most festive tailgate that you can find. Introduce yourselves and explain your situation. I guarantee that you'll be welcomed with open arms. Enjoy drinks with new friends. Alcoholic beverages are not sold or (officially) permitted in the stadium, with bags searched at the gates. Do your best to assure that you're seated prior to kickoff at 3:30. Many casual fans take for granted the pre-kickoff pageantry of college football, which is a huge mistake. No matter the outcome, the game always starts 0-0. Here, America's oldest top-tiered college football program, the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University, is battling one of the nation's most storied college franchises, the Trojans of the University of Southern California. It's a fairly rare, true intercontinental battle held on the Atlantic Coast. USC is heavily favored. But, Rutgers should keep it interesting, especially early-on. The weather looks good. And, true fans will be out in force. Enjoy!
