Lol.. that's not news.. that's like saying Schianno is week to week.
Richie was emphatic on the podcast last night that Ashenfelder would not see the field any time soon. I say if Dylan is still out and AJ is bombing, roll the dice and give Ashenfelder a shot.
Lonergan should claim injury. SCs D lineman are nasty. And there are like 10 of them. Including the freshman from NJ who is an absolute beast.
Is there a snowball's chance Ashenfelder sees the field this weekend if AJ is bombing? Why is it that other schools (see Clemson starting a true freshman this coming Saturday) seem to be able to start true freshman, but Rutgers has to age QBs for 3 years before seeing the field?

If he throws 4 picks, I'm suiting this guy up and running him through the tunnel to take over.
I mean, I hate to be cynical here, but does any of us this matter anymore. Next year there will be a whole new coaching staff with a ton of transfers.
Nothing would make me happier than for Greg to have a 2008 type comeback and prove us all wrong, but that was a Big East schedule, and those comebacks are few and far between.

Outside of the conference and level of competition there is another noticeable difference between 2008 and now. There was obvious talent all over the field in 2008. Outside of Duff and Raymond there is zero proven talent on this roster.
Other schools have actual coaches that are knowledgeable about what it takes to play the position. We have coaches that can't fix or don't notice flawed throwing mechanics, or give up on teaching the position and turn QBs into TEs who never catch any passes because they're never thrown the ball, or preach about violence.
For all his wisdom he's been watching his team get lit up like a Xmas tree every time he plays a mobile QB. Goes all the way back to 04 when NH threw him a beat down.
But he's never been smart enough to get one himself lol
Interesting. Watching the giants game last night. After Dart eluded a pass rush for the Umpteenth time. Collingsworth goes on to say. “The first thing a head coach that comes from the defensive side of the ball does is get a mobile QB because they hate having to defend them.” All except the smartest person in the room.
Just prepare yourself for potentially even worse QB play, remember you asked for it, and hope for the best.
It's Kirk's system, Athan was able to grasp enough of it to play as a true freshman in Minnesota. Clearly AJ hasn't done enough to date to earn everyone's trust. The fact that he couldn't run the mesh properly was rather shocking.
Doesn't mean AJ or Dylan can't improve but one or both really need to show us signs that they can do it.
Yes, it matters, doubtful the next coach will have top NIL so they will need to retain some of these guys. The rest of the season is a job interview for many based on their production & film.
It was really surprising that after 3 years Aj struggled with the little stuff like the slow mesh, staring down WRs and taking off and running. I wasn’t expecting a perfect night from him, an interception or two due to lack of experience but after 3 years practicing I expect him to execute simple plays effectively.
AJ. Should have gotten many more snaps last season especially when games were already decided.
It's very concerning especially after working with Athan & Kirk for two years. Next few games will tell us whether it was first game jitters or he's not cut out for this level.
I always feel like our QBs play like statues in the backfield and so hesitant to just make something happen with their legs when they are in trouble. It is VERY rare a QB pulls the ball on the RPO to run so what’s the point of even trying to deceive in this manner???

If the OL was playing like last year, this wouldn't be as much of an issue. But they probably can't afford to have AJ get knocked out either with Dylan hurt.

Grasp the system? The one that doesn’t try to fool you, no misdirection plays or trick plays, no bubble screens, no throws to a TE, few throws to a RB, very very very vanilla offense

Maybe go back and read the RT article on Kirk and his offense. There is a lot of pre-snap stuff that the QB has to process to determine if they are passing or running on that play.
I don’t know what there is to grasp, but while it didn’t seem possible after watching the UMass game, AJ seemed worse to me than Lonergan did. Lonergan made mistakes, but not too many QBs aren’t going to when their run game only generates at net of 30 yards. It doesn’t matter since the season is now shot, but I’d like to see what Lonergan would look like in a game where we can establish the run even a little. It changes the entire dynamic of the game when running is not possible.

Fact remains that RU is at best C- in the QB under 17 yrs of GS leading the program. It’s one thing after another.
Our QB never seem “ready” unless we bring in an AK and he’s the only transfer QB that really worked
Yet other teams play backup QBs all the time vs us and seem to have a career day
Kirk’s offenses have always been sort of boring but effective when the personnel do their jobs properly.
Yes but..some of the play calling has cost us games. It can be atrocious . Since we have an awful D, we need our O to score more . Plain and simple

Or something like that. That’s definitely true for Rutgers
No argument there, I thought the 2nd & 3rd series against UMass were beyond awful and put them in a bad spot. And going back to the mesh on that 4th down when straight handoffs were gaining chunks of yardage was totally baffling.

and how about their first series bs BC they do 3 runs up the middle then a tush push deep in your own area? Coaches made it 7-0 Umass.
you get humiliated the week before and you got is 3 runs up the middle and an asinine tush push on your 34 yard line in your foes series?
I just feel like GS no longer has the feel of the game. Some coaches just have the feeling and he either never had it or has lost it.
in Q4 and you are down you go for it on 4th but you rely on your NFL RB to get a yard on a handoff and not your brand new QB in the push.
That was it for me that game. Knew they’d lose.
I always get on Kirk in the game threads when he doesn't mix up the play calling on 1st and 2nd downs. Way too often they wind up in bad down and distance with the predictable run on 1st down and repeat on 2nd down. Neither QB is reliable enough to bail them out of those situations at this time, so he really needs to keep the defense guessing like that 1st series against BC.
Granted he is a highly touted 5 start recruit, but how can a true freshman be thrown into action so soon, yet we have QBs who have 2 or 3 years on the team (Ashenfelder and Surace) who are either purportedly not ready or have not appeared to be ready to play in live game action.
