OT sort of: Rate ISU on thug plays, on purpose fouls

I dont think I have ever seen two or three gunners on a punt team grab the returner, lift him up, carry him toward the ball and smash him down on the turf. That is coached and it is bad play.

IIRC, one facemask on the qb sneak might have been on purpose. Those two things are enough to me to question their coach's methods.

Any other times that I cant recall. I do want to watch the replay and listen to the nbc broadcasters.

I listen to Dolph and Angerer during the live game. Just never know what you are going to get with the natl TV announcers. Blackledge is good, not great, but I did read that he was saying ISU was grabbing hawk receivers the whole game

There is no “might” about it on the facemask. It was not a football play. It was a dirty play that the intent was either intended to intimidate or injure. Very dangerous and disgusting when it was overtly intentional.

I’ve seen some posters say they thought the Moulton injury was suspect as well but I’d have to go back and watch.

My brothers used to do that to me when playing football in the yard. They would throw me at the ball to call it a fumble.

We played a football type game way back with 5-15 kids called "whoever has the ball runs", that was the name. And that was it chase, tackle, pile on, rip the ball free and whoever gets it next rinse and repeat. it was a blast

Watched BTN in 60 replay. Watch very first play and it happened again multiple times especially first half. On that play Diaz goes down and another defender who didn’t make the tackles jumps on late when he’s already down. Again they did this multiple times or jumping on pile late. I don’t buy any of it as “playing to the whistle”. It was cheap and I’m sure trying to provoke reaction back from Iowa. Any competent officiating crew would’ve flagged isu least once for a late hit.

Isu players embodied their coach as fake tough guys Saturday night.

every one of those 112 snaps and kickoffs seemed like they were inflicting extracurricular damage in the form of holds, late hits, twisting ball carriers, hitting players not in the play. 100% coached and deliberate. either to intimidate, outright injure, get in our heads, or provoke a late reaction. i have zero respect for those guys even though this will be war every year going forward. in this context, i have to say our players were incredibly disciplined. not sure if we would have kept our heads if this was on the road. the officials were criminal...just 2 holds calls were enough to finish them, so with proper officiating suspect this would have been laughter of a game.

He was plenty far enough away,... Clowns intentionally went after him and tried to push him into making ball contact.

Obviously he started out close, as his initial plan was to field the ball,... Upon deciding otherwise he immediately backed away, which is what he is doing in your clip.

yeah he's at least 5 yards away from the ball and back stepping when the hoodlums mug him. it's outrageous to pin anything on evans

So you're one of those guys who can't hold 2 thoughts at the same time and realize that both can be true.

The clone attempt was bush league, no question.

It's also true he let himself get way too close to the ball once it was clear he wasn't going to field it cleanly.

Those things are not mutually exclusive.

I cannot say how stupid and bad those refs were. It is legal to block/push a player into the punted ball but no holding.

And retired ref McCauley who was on air as the booth official said it was actually holding and two personal fouls. The one clown lifted James up and slammed him to the turf and he did not have the ball and then when getting up he forearm shivvered James head into the turf. check the clowns for roids.

Rewatching the game, to me a lot of the extra curriculars from Iowa State looked purposeful, as if the Coaches encouraged them to do it. Could be a culture thing going forward for them. As the game went on, they played a pretty messy game. A lot of holds and mistakes like illegal subs. Some pretty clear PIs were not called, not to mention the numerous PFs. I think they paid for the dirty play by getting all those injuries throughout the game.

I don't ever recall seeing anything like that. The more the game went along the more I thought I cannot believe Iowa State has gone this low. Makes me think it is the changes in coaches. Very poor sportsmanship and actually downright humiliating. Will not hurt my feelings if they never win another game this year.

I have come to the conclusion that the B12 refs did not want to get their penalty flags dirty from the turf in Iowa City.

I agree. I would bet the Iowa coaches found him to be too nonchalant about getting away from the football once he decided not to field it.

And I'm sure Evans has heard about it by now.

AND Iowa State should have been penalized on the play.

IMHO opinion, the bad officiating we see so often goes beyond incompetence, and is well into the territory of "corrupt."

I think I agree with this. ISU fan base is trying to say their performance is reason to be really optimistic for the rest of the year. I tend to think this was more the product of catching Iowa early, in a rivalry game, with a poorly officiate game, against an Iowa team still finding a bit of its identity on offense. Iowa was close to breaking multiple big pass plays. The Big 12 teams will hit more of those and take advantage of the lack of athleticism on the field better than Iowa did.

that said, the Big 12 is not good (okie st upsetting Oregon aside) so who knows! But ISU fans definitely need to slow their roll about bragging about a moral victory (go figure!!)

I bet the bigger issue in the coaches’ eyes was he needed to decisively run up and fair catch that punt. There was a punt in the northern Illinois game where he did the same thing and we lost a ton of field position because of it. The full on assault afterwards that we all witnessed was egregious, but probably never happens if RVZ is back on that one. And is likely why RVZ is the “starter” at PR.

Evans was ultimately a good bit away from the ball when the clone attacker assaulted him, but if you aren’t going to catch it, there is NO reason to be anywhere near the ball. Run to the sideline and let the defense take the field.

Not that I don't mind piling on Iowa State, nor do I defend them in any way, shape, or form.....but I've seen several teams try to pull punt returners into the ball, including Iowa a couple years ago.

Yes we are guilty of trying this once upon a time. I think the case on Saturday is a good reminder though of why it's not a smart thing to try to do..........
