It’s a little more complex than Common Core vs MCCRS for reading. The standards are still generally the same but the journey to get there is quite different. The biggest thing is changing from “Units of Study” to “Science of Reading” as the foundation for young students.
“Units of Study” was basically pushed by a quack named Lucy Calkins from Columbia University. For some reason most of the country adopted her method teaching reading with no real proof that it worked as good or better than what was used before. It basically worked off vibes by having kids use context clues to guess the meanings of words and completely went away from phonics as a foundation of reading. It was officially scrapped in 2023. You will know if your kid was taught this if they ever had “sight words” to learn.
“Science of Reading” is the reading program now used in Mississippi and other states including Indiana that is producing much better results and one of the big reasons for the turnaround in reading for young students. It goes back to phonics being one of the foundations for learning to read.
