Not to be that guy and bring up Pope during a football game... but this just proves why Kentucky basketball and Pope have 0 excuses getting beat by 30 to Alabama in basketball.

These SEC football schools put ALL of their time, money and attention into football and it is clear they have a talent advantage, yet Kentucky is still getting embarrassed in basketball.

THESE SCHOOLS DON'T CARE ABOUT BASKETBALL. No excuses this year.

Literally the only reason it's this way is because we arent getting elite players.

We are having to spend 2x as much money in basketball just to give Pope a chance against these FOOTBALL SCHOOLS, where we all see where they are spending their money.
Watching Pope coach and recruit is like watching someone pull their teeth out. It’s painful how much he seems to struggle despite the resources at his disposal.

It is much easier to get 5-7 guys in basketball than getting 40 dudes in football. And with the portal now anyone can compete in Basketball. These sports are not even close to the same.
Oats will never win a championship if that makes you feel any better, dude does not know how to coach defense.

This thread is a microcosm of what our issue as a fan base is. Here we are on a fall Saturday playing Alabama and y'all are going on about basketball.
It sucks, but if we’re gonna end up 4-8 or 3-9, what else can we do besides hope for basketball? But even then many of us are dreading the basketball season as well.

It might seem weird to bring up basketball during a football game but they are directly related.

Resources, brand, money, and fan support for different sports, expose what each school actually tries to be good at.

Kentucky, a basketball school, should be really, really good at basketball compared to these football schools. And if we're not, someone needs to be fired.

Some sports fans can talk multiple sports. I can chat about mlb baseball and the nfl and college football and about the continued mediocrity of our basketball program all in one day. It doesnt take any effort.

Thank Sankey for that. You are correct, if they are not winning they check out. Quickly. That’s why everything is so hard for Kentucky basketball. Getting guys eligible, terrible officiating, technicals. A strong UK means 3/4 of the SEC basketball fanbase checks out and stops coming. Sankey makes sure that doesn’t happen. It’s why he fought Mitchell to UK so hard, but has no problem with him going back to Mizzou.
It’s why we needed to hire Pope. No good proven coach would come here. They see how hard the commissioner works to keep us down. Why come fight that?? Barnhart never fought it.
Every big SEC matchup we will see Shows, Ogesbly or Adam’s assigned. Those are his hatchet men.

I seriously doubt that SEC universities "put all their revenue sharing" into football. The basketball played by both men's and women's teams have money. Will Wade would not have gone to LSU without $. Same for Kim Mulkey. South Carolina directs mega bucks to their WBB team. Get a grip posters. Does all the SEC NIL flow to football? Probably not. Good grief! The Courier Journal in Louisville reported in 2025 that the hated U of L would direct 70% of required revenue sharing to football, 15% to MBB, 5% to WBB, 5% to WVB and 5% to baseball. NIL is extra. How many of you have shopped online at the NIL store? A large number of our athletes have merchandise on the site. Stop whining and step up!

I think AR, FL, VU, TN, FL, AL, AU, TX, and even GA care a lot more about basketball than you seem to think. Most if not all schools mentioned have a bigger athletic budget than we do. I'm also convinced baseball is becoming very important to most SEC schools. The bigger and better football becomes at UK, the more $$$ we will have for men's basketball. We have or atleast is seems we have been willing to spend more for our BB roster but I would think TX, TN, and FL will have a bigger roster expense than us this year. It is so much more important to improve our football program rather than basketball. Given $$$ and time I have no doubt Stein will improve our FB program and at the same time that will improve our BB. If we actually believe other SEC schools don't care about basketball, we are fooling ourselves and that possibly is why we have become a middle of the pack SEC BB program. GO BBN!

He might not ever win one at Bama but I’d bet my left nut he’d win one here if he came.

This is a weird premise when Bama is doing better on both fronts than us which would seem to indicate that they care about both basketball and football and are proving (like Florida has done as well) that a program can succeed at both. That should be the goal. Kick *** at both revenue sports and deliver a product the fans are proud of. No reason for it to be either or.

This. It's much easier for a football school like Florida to be elite at basketball (Donovan had three top ten picks when he repeated and retained basically the entire roster the next year). Get the right coach and some top talent and you can contend. Two or three elite players is not going to move the needle in football; Indiana did well because Curt Cignetti is a monster, but he also had a roster full of grown men. Cignetti does not beat Alabama on Saturday either (with Kentucky's roster).

I have said this forever; it is much easier for a football school to compete in basketball than it is for a basketball school to compete in football. Until Indiana, when is the last time a basketball school seriously contended? No, 2007 Kansas does not count, as they benefited from the easiest P5 schedule in history.
