Fake punt…Gotta do better

That was a bad call. If you are gonna gamble, make it a gamble with a play that has a shot of conversion. I'm not sure what happened during halftime, but the adjustments that needed to be made didn't happen. And Bama rightly took away any short routes. Dared Minchey to convert the mid range game and longer passes. He wasn't going to.

The decision made sense. Our defense was gassed and unready to return to the field, Bama had seized momentum, and we only needed one friggin yard. I think Stein correctly assessed the situation and concluded we absolutely had to retain possession there …or the walls were about to come tumbling down.

So I’ll defend the decision to take the risk …but he could’ve come up with a better play call for it.

It was a hot humid day and our defense ran out of gas. Our offense isn't good enough to beat an Alabama right now. I do agree the wrong guy got the snap on the fake punt but I liked the idea.
Forecasted temperature of 93 @ A&M, 10 degrees warmer than yesterday 👀

I walked to get something to drink and when came back, Kentucky down 2 touchdowns. I couldn't believe it.

I was okay with the fake punt, it was the two long to develop pocket pass calls on 3rd and long that got sacked and sacked for a fumble I didn't like. Move the freakin pocket against an NFL rush that knows it's a pass play.

Quite possibly the worst call in Kentucky football history. But at least our student section didn’t look like Texas’s.

The defense wasn't good enough. If it was the loss would have been a close one. 45 points is terrible.

The fake punt took the air out of the Cats. The worst thing about it was even if we got it, we were still 65 yards away from pay dirt.

At that point in the game, Bama’s offense had been bad and their QB was awful. Have Bama start from their 25 and make their jittery QB feel the pressure. It was too early and not the right score for the fake.

Also, the play selection with the player selection on the fake was baffling.

The air was already out. Bama had seized the lead and momentum. And our defense was looking flat out gassed. Even if we had punted, Bama likely would’ve scored on the ensuing possession.

The fake was an attempt to re-take the game’s momentum at a time when we dearly needed something. It was a risk, but a logical risk …especially since we only needed one damn yard.

The people now bashing the decision are the same ones who would’ve been raving about what a brilliant call it was if we had just gotten that one yard. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Absolutely atrocious decision. Defense was playing great and no need to give them a short field. After we failed, defense literally gave up and it turned into a rout.

If you think you absolutely must go for it there, which you shouldn't, then at least run an actual play.

Just an embarrassingly amateur decision. I love stein but i guess learning on the job is going to be part of the learning process. I still think we'll surprise someone, but our offensive staff really needs to get our qb figured out. Minchey just melted yesterday and he literally cost us that game. Everyone else was good enough to win.

Fake put was the worst call in UK FB history. Never in my 50 years following have I seen such a bad call. And that's including some of the fake punt call Mummy called over and over.

I thought Minchey was poised and polished against Youngstown State, but yesterday he looked dazed, confused and rattled. I thought the long ball might be a weakness, but I thought he would be a better runner/scrambler than he showed yesterday. He will need to be a much more effective QB going forward for us to be competitive in SEC games. Hopefully, he can and will be.

With the $$$ and emphasis on bringing in a reliable and talented offensive line, I thought they would perform better than they did. Their inability to move the Tide enough to provide running room for our backs is a concern going forward.

We received an early season wake-up call.
It will be interesting to see how we respond.

Off the top of my head, Joker and Stoops punting in enemy territory on 4th and short when trailing pretty late in 4th are certainly worse. In general, Stoops had no idea how to manage big decisions and his clock management, use of TOs was horrendous.

I forget the time on the clock but there was plenty of game left and was still one or two score game.

honestly I’m glad stein got his *** rocked yesterday and humbled. Refocus for aTm and try not to get blown out.

Too many pass plays on short second downs imo.

I thought OL looked great until bama dared our qb to beat them.

The first half we were getting massive movement in the run game. Second half, they walked everyone up and brought the house offen. Qb just ate the ball. Oc didn't help because he called nothing to relieve that pressure. A few screens would've been lethal.

OL cant block long enough when theyre bringing more than we have. That's a qb and oc problem to solve and it never happened.

Yet Stoops had more 10 win seasons and bowl games that any coach ever at UK. Stoops beat Tennessee as well as Florida something many other UK coaches never manages to do, not to mention multi 10 win seasons. Trash Stoops all you like but he was one of if not the best coach UK has ever had. Were you around during our great 0-10-1 or 2-9 and 3-8 seasons? If you were you would know what bad coaching was.

I didn’t like the play call on 3rd and 1 from bamas 25 or so. We were in 4 down territory and went with a short pass over the middle that was incomplete. Then threw to Rodriguez on 4th for the first down ( the play he fumbled out of bounds which ultimately was overturned in our favor). Two plays to pick up a yard you have to rely on your offensive line.

Stoops did well for UK but his time here was over. I’ll take any win over Florida and Tennessee but the Florida and Tennessee teams he beat were hardly juggernauts.

Defense played plenty well enough to win.
No, it did not. Defense gave up 45 points, 343 yards and 21 first downs. That is not what the football world considers “plenty well enough to win.”

Your attempt to pin all blame on Minchey would make more sense if the score had been 21-17. But instead it was a 45-17 blowout. We got beaten up on BOTH sides of the ball.

Defense gave up 38. Alabama had a pick 6. UKs offense scored 10. They also had a pick 6. You aren't going to win many games only scoring 10 these days.

This is a fair point. I forgot about the pick 6.

But I stand by my overall point. It’s silly to say that Minchey is the only player who came up short.

Did you even watch the game??
The offense gave up 7 on a horrendous interception. Then Minchey fumbled deep in our territory to give up another 7. Then the ridiculous fake punt call gave Bama the ball at the 33 which resulted in 8 more.

Then Stein went for it deep on our side of the field in the middle of the 4th Q and gave the ball up for another easy score. The offense essentially gave up 29 of the points. Bama scored 29 points on 98 yards because of the terrible offense and a couple of terrible play calls.

This. You did an excellent job explaining something I just didn't have the patience to. It looks like the Stein offensive era is bringing lots of new fans ala Mumme. That's great but it also means some really uninformed people are going to have some very loud opinions.

You must have missed some of our corner play in that zone defense we were running.

I agree with you and UKnine. To me, once the opposing team gets a feel that you don’t have much to offer offensively, that frees up the defense to play as aggressive as they want. On top of that, it allows the opposing offense to play much differently/freely.

I liked a lot about what I saw from UK defensively. However, one of those things wasn’t the secondary.

RB1 is still up in the air.
Not a good sign when Patterson is the best of the three.
Barnes made a good case for #3.

Yeah, been a fan since the 70s.

Like I said, Stoops was fine until he wasn’t.

Stein is the guy now. We needed the change desperately.

I didn't come home and rewatch because we collapsed but from the stands it looked like we put alot of stress on them by blitzing alot. I think they held up fine.

Stein defended the decision afterward. He said Kentucky had the look it wanted and that sometimes “you’ve got to be risky.”

A trip to the optometrist may be money well spent.
