Someone tell me the difference between Will Stein and Pope

Stein has been a coach for 2 games.
Pope has been a mediocre phony for well over a decade.

They played two games against ranked opponents and lost both.
The op is probably from Ohio which is why he/she is a OSU football fan. Probably became a UK basketball fan because Ohio has nothing to offer.
Pope is about as charismatic as a bowl of potato soup.
Which makes his cult of personality among Pope fans all the stranger. I still don’t get it. What’s he got that makes a rather large amount of UK fans so eager to protect him from criticism at all costs?
Stein was a young, well liked and highly respected offensive coordinator coming off a summer of some huge recruiting wins in his second game as a head coach against the winningest program in the sport and their head coach who played in the national championship game 3 years ago.
Pope is the coach for the winningest program in the sport. They went to Nashville to play Gonzaga with one of the highest paid rosters for what everyone called a home game.

Yes, that Ferrari have four flat tires and needed an engine overhaul in case you didn't notice. I am not excusing Pope, but I wanna put things in perspective. This wasn't the same kind of Team that Tubby inherited.
Pope is actually a better coach and will have better results. We just don't like him because we expect to compete for championships in basketball.
Stein is the football coach and like the last one....if he wins five games a season against two nobody's Louisville South Carolina and vandy he will be praised. It's just two different things completely.
Stein can lose almost every game and fanbase will still be hopeful he does something next year. Pope can make the sweet 16 and we want him fired because we want final fours.
But comparing the two Pope is out of Steins league. Just different expectations. Let me know when Stein makes the playoffs. And I'm a fire Pope last year type of guy.

Well, the first year he went to Washington and beat Gonzaga plus Duke and six other top 15 teams. Last year sucked so let's see what he knows on his third year.
When are these "better resullts" going to come for Pope?
All I see is a guy who's had 11 seasons to figure out how to win more than 75% of his games in one season, and has never done it.
The UK historical winning percentage is 75.7%. That's the average. Pope has never even hit the average in a single season at any program he's coached at, and I don't see that changing this year with his team full of G-League players.
That's the guy we have leading the program.

His first team didn’t quit. Sure, they had some clunkers but they didn’t quit. Only morons conflate the two years.
Oh I'm the biggest fire Pope guy on here. But even being that bad he got us a sweet sixteen and as bad as the pr is with recruiting he's actually had some of the top classes I think.
Its just a big difference. Even tho ik you already know. In basketball we go after Hurley because we don't see it crazy having a shot at the best coach in America.
We never would of thought we could get Saban after he won a championship at Alabama. Much less two. Different way different.
There are tons of better coaches qualified for the UK job than Pope. Even at that his results will be better than a good coach Like Stein in football.
Football program will hold any coach back
Basketball program will propel any coach forward.

Was Mark Pope not allowed to retain current players, recruits, assistant coaches or bring his former BYU players with him?

Was Pope not allowed to keep current players? Was he not allowed to bring his former players like most other coaches did? Was he not allowed to re-recruit the commitments we already had from Cal? Did he not have the same NCAA portal to build an instant roster like every other coach? Was he not allowed to keep assistant coaches like Antigua who wanted to stay and who recruited very well?
Of course he could do all of those things. He just failed at them, like he has failed as a basketball coach for 10 years.
Stop trying to change the narrative around Pope. It isn't working and only ends up making him look worse.

I guess we will always have the early regular season win against a Duke team that lost Sion James to injury in the first half and then had Flagg and Kueppel out for extended stretches with cramping in the 2nd, allowing us to go on a late run. I wonder if Pope can get him a banner hung for that?

I don't think Pope is the guy for the job. But even at the he's the coach at Kentucky and that's one of the best programs in the nation.
Football is not and never will be in the National conversation. Basketball is even worth a terrible coach. Most understand what I was saying.

The best win in the last 30 years for football is a citrus bowl. Sweet sixteen in basketball is a bad season for UK.

Dog, no one being realistic thinks we were ever a contender that year. Only the homers think that. We got routed by Tenn in the sw16. We had among the largest points losses of the sw16.
As much crap as we gave Cal for underperforming, he only played 4th once and only placed lower than 4th during the Covid year. But now some fans think we should accept the “new normal” when it was never the norm until Pope became coach.
Down Butler and Carr we weren't a title threat. Year one was a damn good team and they beat a bunch of good teams including the national champions that year I'm pretty sure. Could be wrong on that but I'm not AI I'm just an ol Kentucky fan.
Lots of fans will agree BEFORE INJURIES year one Pope was a title threat. I felt like we could beat anybody. They showed they could beat anybody.
And to answer your first question. Yes if I'm expecting to be a title contender and my team gets beat in the sweet sixteen I consider it a bad year.
I expect every year to be title contender when it comes to Kentucky basketball. Thats kinda what the whole conversation is about. Expectations.
Pope is bad at Kentucky because expectations. Popes not a bad coach. If he was at almost any other school in the SEC and did the exact same thing he's done the last two years ...which is a sweet sixteen and round of 32 exit with a bunch of really good regular season wins and a bunch of really bad regular season losses...also known as mediocre. He would just be another guy doing a good job at those schools.
He's terrible here because we have Kentucky Basketball expectations. That's why that job is one of one. The football job isn't quite a 1 of 1 job like basketball. I get it literally is but surely you know what I mean. But then again it feels like I'm talking to a rival fan and not a UK fan
