This is the 60th meeting of what was at one time a much anticipated matchup of two traditional rivals. Elkin took wins for the first few years of the rivalry after the formation of Starmount from consolidation of Jonesville, West Yadkin, and Boonville High Schools. Starmount won its first game against Elkin in 1977 after a one point heartbreaker the previous year, and has dominated the series ever since, with the exception of Elkin’s run in the early 2000’s and winning the state.
At least since my years in high school, the rivalry has seemed to be waning. The “Battle of the Bridge” (named for the Hugh Chatham bridge that no longer even exists) doesn’t seem to be as highly anticipated as it once was. But there is no doubt strong connection between both school communities!
Will this year be any different? It’s always tempting to score compare based on previous opponents: Starmount beat Forbush 51-3 in week 3, and Forbush beat Elkin 34-0 this past week, so what is in store for this coming Friday with Starmount at Elkin? It’s always a game on any given night.
