I recall a couple from 2010 (Dodd vs Savage) and 2011 (Dodd vs Nova). I think those years really got on Schiano's nerves for many reasons including QB drama. I think he is now primed to avoid any QB controversies like the plague.

2010 saw Savage disintegrate, and Dodd won BE Player of the Week in his first start (vs UConn the eventual BE champ). Things did tip ugly. 2011 saw Nova vociferously booed off RU home field and Schiano was forced (and I mean forced so angry was the crowd)

Rutgers now has a full-fledged quarterback controversy

Yeah - I meant since Greg returned. During the 2.0 era. QB1 was never really in doubt to start the season, nor should it have been. That includes 2023 where Evan failed to make a case that he was clearly better than Gavin. Now when the offense struggled as much as it did during the season, one might question giving Evan more of chance (particularly in that Wisconsin game), but any argument that Gavin shouldn’t have been given the early opportunity there would be silly. Evan wasn’t blatantly better. The consequence of not going out of our way to give Gavin a chance was far reaching from a recruiting perspective and 100% had to be considered in that situation. Another time could come where we want to convince a kid to enroll early and the last thing we would want was a track record showing that we tossed Gavin to the side without giving him enough of a chance.

no.. not really. Offensive system went away from pro-set QBs... so it wasn't about who was the better QB... it was about who was THOUGHT to be better for the new system.

But that's the way it goes, right? There was plenty of evidence in both NFL and college football that RPO was the way to go...Kaliakmanis did okay with it last year.. finally.

Nova was repeatedly handed the ball since he was a frosh.. all kinds of explanations popped up as to why we never had a true open QB competition.. the most sane of which was that Flood wanted to cement ties to Don Bosco... or that he had promised Nova that from the start and was just keeping his word. Flood's most brilliant move was to contact Friedgen out-of-the-blue. That and all those reps made Nova a good QB in the end.

Temple is getting better with RU players choosing them, but I consider players transferring out to be losses if they sign with a P-4 program and not find a new home in G-6.
Nothing against Zach & Ajani , but going to a G-6 program like Temple might mean P-4s didn't go after them and RU might bring in replacements better suited for going against the top programs it faces

I don't understand how Rutgers fields an offense every year that every other college offense in the country looks more organized and innovative. And the last two years the defense has also looked unorganized and is literally the worst in the country. Fire this man!

Most teams you’re talking about have coaches who adapt and change their way of thinking from 1990/2000 Ball to 2020s Ball on the field, recruiting, other factors.

I know you and others are tired of reading this but this is the guy who should’ve been hired in 2012, 2016, 2020. Can he be Rutgers’ Cignetti? Maybe but I doubt it, esp since Penn st is up 10-3 at the half.

Never said he lit it up elsewhere lol. Hes been ok.

Could’ve been different here as a Jersey Kid. Who knows.

Every other offense looks much more organized because those teams have superior coaches. The better ones actually block people occasionally. They don’t just copy successful offensive systems from other programs without actually understanding how they work or expect them to work without blocking anybody.

He got the boot after sneaking off to camp at PSU and somewhere else looking for better offers while he was committed. The staff quickly found out and decided he wasn't someone they wanted in the class anymore.

Based on his career to date, we didn't miss much and look at the growth in the WR room over that time. Would he play more than special teams here?
