Here's a look at everything Rutgers Football head coach Greg Schiano said after the Boston College game on Friday night.
To say it once you can explain it away as misspeaking. But to say it twice and try to explain away multiple ways shows that he truly believes they “tried too hard”.
I didn’t see people making mistakes of being over aggressive. I didn’t see physical penalties. I saw a team that had position discipline issues and coaching problems. I saw a coaching staff horribly prepared once again. I saw a coach being fooled by mobile qb for the 100th time. I saw a defense designed to abandon the middle of the field on 3rd and long.
Richie asked some great questions and he didn’t like it. Yes they’ve done the mesh many times over the years and it’s failed miserably. Why bring it back? And why bring it back on 3rd and short and 4th and goal? Those are times where time is of the essence. Fire off the ball and be aggressive. Not play patty cake in the backfield and allow one defender to blow up the exchange.
Know what it means. I didn’t see it. There were very little or no over pursuits. No penalties of aggression. I saw people lining up out of position. I saw people taking the easy route and hitting the wrong gap. I saw multiple people losing eye discipline.
We need to try harder to find a competent HC.
It's the same script every year. The words mean nothing.
"We were 2 for 4 in the red zone and that's not good."

GS always sounds like team is always on the verge of success.

Truth is GS has rarely been able to beat good teams and now the bad ones are hard

Okay. I would say that’s poor coaching and bad recognition of assignment over trying too hard. But I get it.
It’s always on the coaches. But just saying trying too hard is a nice way of saying undisciplined
Playing with words Greg, he didn't ask you if you've spent what you thought was this big amount of money. You were asked if youve gotten more investment this year than you've ever gotten before and still lost to UMass and Boston college! Why are you getting starting linebackers from Drake and rice? Umass had far less money to work with and managed to get transfers from Indiana, notre dame etc...where did all of that money go?
what the hell was up with that mesh handoff BS? The O problem vs UMASS was Raymond dancing in the backfield.. which I did not mind a couple times because our OL should have been able to open holes and sustain them. But when that wasn't happening just hit the line fast and hard and maybe a hole opens for a small window.
So what do we do? Some mesh abomination with a QB that no one thinks of as a running threat? How was that supposed to work? And once they see it.. and how poorly we execute it, why wouldn't they just run blitz the hell outta that?
We threw away downs over and over and over.
I ain't gonna quit on them because I hate it when players quiet quit. I saw some fire in Schiano at times during the game which I found missing vs UMASS.
But, come on, the Schiano-haters are thumping their chests claiming they've been right for the last quarter-century and those of us who supported his rehiring after the Ash debacle have nothing with which to make a case to keep him.

The 4 ints explains, partially, why we don't throw more. AJ was 7 for 8 at one point and we weren't letting him throw. His first INT was clearly a badly missed defensive holding call issue. Our star player.. a bonafide national-level college football star WR did not get any star treatment like we have seen go against us for decades.
The INT to the NT was painful but understandable.. with more time maybe he recognizes the lead Duff had would bes tbe served by a loft into the endzone where he can run under it rather than the timing pattern that the NT jumped.
And I think the other 2 were errant throws.
Unfortunately, this will lead to just more predictable run-clock running plays.. protect the ball!

Sports, and football is no different, is about making plays. The trip to hard thing is about being undisciplined. That’s not trying to hard. They needed to try harder- to overcome their coaches poor decisions. One right after the next.
Trying too hard makes me think the players lack discipline and have low football IQs.
Stated very well and when we abandoned the mesh we actually were firing on all cylinders in the run game.
The pass playcalling was also atrocious in the same way. I get a new QB having plays scripted for first option but to have this kid throw over the middle constantly into traffic was not setting him up for success. We only threw one screen play to the RB. Didn’t throw a single WR screen to get ball in hands of playmakers and again in typical KC fashion just ran fly routes otherwise.
While kids struggled on both ends of the field, I really put majority of issues on coaches. There were some bright spots but very little
The mesh was copied from Wake Forest where Same Hartman (QB) used it. Its called a "slow mesh" but KC carries it to extremes. Harman and RB would be in slow mesh for a second or two but RU has QB and RB running up to the line tangled-up in each other. I call it the "Siamese mesh" because the players look joined-together as they run to the LOS. I think it has to hinder the RB who has to be ready to burst through the line and not play footsie with the QB
It’s kinda sad….he’s becoming a joke at this Liu r…BUT he’s doing it to himself.
Agreed! That first INT where the refs showed they were not calling the defensive holding on the bandana boys should have told us not to throw timing patterns to the middle of the field. Throw them on sidelines.
Furthermore, the mesh and shotgun handoffs to a standing still RB does not lend itself well to the play-action pass.. which is how we could have thrown deeper down the middle.. by sucking in the safeties.
if the QB is not a legit running threat with a reputation for running, what could it possibly achieve?
I hated Vedral doing the mesh because he seemed to preordain whether he was taking it or giving it away. It was the RPO without the R or P and the O was fake too because it was no option.. it was decided before snap.
And this is WORSE.
Maybe the players have to step forward and call BS on having to run that crap. I cannot imagine Surace or Raymod or even Duff is happy with that kind of crap taking away their chance to succeed.
I think the HC was “trying too hard” on their first drive. How do you give the ball over on downs in your own territory to start the game?
