You'll notice I used the word 'continue' because this is actually a continued policy that has been in effect for years now...
What the Policy Actually DoesAssessment vs. Coursework: Oregon paused the separate "Essential Skills" requirement—which forced students to pass specific standardized tests or submit extra work samples to prove proficiency outside of normal classes. It did not eliminate regular academic classes or credit requirements. Students must still pass standard coursework in language arts, mathematics, and other core subjects to graduate.
Statewide Application: The suspension applies universally to all high school students in the state, rather than being a race-specific policy or carve-out for students of color.

The real policy pause, first enacted during COVID and extended in 2023, cited equity concerns because higher shares of students of color, English learners, and disabled students needed extra senior-year work to meet the requirements.
So what classes must students prove proficiency in order to graduate?
None.
In Oregon, the separate requirement to demonstrate proficiency in the Essential Skills (reading/comprehending a variety of texts, writing clearly and accurately, and applying mathematics in a variety of settings) for a high school diploma remains suspended through the 2027–28 school year.
Students still must earn the required course credits by successfully completing classes. So if a teacher passes a student who cannot read, which we know for a fact that they do in massive numbers in the government school systems, then there is no check to confirm that individual is actually capable or that they have even been educated.

The problem is the students in the blue states and cities wouldn't be able to read the ten commandments.
I am saying the students in red areas are generally more knowledgeable than those in blue areas.
the crazy things, for me at least, is that graduating people who can't do the basics required will go into the work force and not be able to get a job that provides sufficient earnings to live on. The we get the political statements that people who work for a living should be paid a living wage....then the companies do away with these folks jobs and politicians yell "discrimination"...we then have to support these folks with food stamps, welfare, medicaid.
Wouldn't it just be better for us as a society to force our educators to either educate the students or pass them off as non graduates?
yea, we really don't need them... But, if we're honest, this is not a Trump issue, this problem goes back decades. We need workers in this country, but we likely don't need more garbage collectors, landscapers, building cleaners. etc...
Yeah, as a single example Mississippi now has significantly better primary education that California.

They spend about $11,000 LESS per student than Massachusetts and they’re beating them.
How?
Science of reading.
3rd grade retention if you can’t read.
Charters in failing districts.
School choice for special needs.
RAISED standards, not lowered them.
Governor Tate Reeves: conservative reforms + accountability work for EVERY kid.
Blue states keep dumbing it down.
Mississippi raised the bar, and the kids met it.
This is the model. Copy it.
