Rocco Becht lines up in the shotgun. Brings Andrew Rappleyea back to line up as a second RB to help in pass protection. Ball is snapped—primary target is James Peoples out of the backfield, but he is tripped by his own guy and falls down. Koby Howard is the second option, he ran a stop route but is double-covered. Ben Brahmer runs a deeper stop route and is double covered. Chase Sowell runs a fly route and is man-covered by one defender with another covering zone. The pass protection appears to break down and Becht looks for a lane to scramble, but there isn’t one.

Adversity. This is what Matt Campbell preached all off season. What do you do when things go wrong? And he promised, they will go wrong at some point.

This was that point. Everything went wrong on this play. So what did they do?

The offensive linemen and Andrew Rappleyea never gave up, they repositioned and took control to solidify the pocket again. Rocco Becht recognized that and reset his feet. Koby Howard knew his QB needed an outlet, so he snuck behind the two defensive players who were covering him and emerged into an opening. That wasn’t a route he ran in the second half of the play, it was improvisation. It was backyard football. Becht lasered it just out ahead of him so he could catch it in stride and from there, he took off for the end zone. Touchdown Penn State!

And this is what felt different about this team compared to last year. Read the first part again and ask yourself what would have happened when the play disintegrated like that?

I can think of two things, either the QB would underthrow it to Sowell on the fly route hoping for a pass interference, or he would scramble. But worse than that, the WRs had specific instructions and never deviated from them. If the play broke down, they’d stop. But not just them. If the RB fell down, he was done. If the linemen didn’t get their initial block, they’d never reset. There was clearly a script for everything and not much room for improvisation. Everything had to go right. It had to be perfect. No room for mistakes. In the past, if the play worked, we got yards. If it didn’t work, the play died. I say this at the risk of making this another pissing match about the new vs the old guy, which I don’t want to do—but I think THIS play showed us a lot of what we’ve been missing in all of our games, especially the big ones. Let’s hope we see a lot more of this down the road. Especially in big games.
Rocco is a better qb than Allar. Obvious.

Campbell and staff, very important to note staff, are better than Franklin and his staff. They prepare their kids to make plays like this.

Rapp is a beast. Howard is talented. Both were muted last year.

Riker is one helluva leader on the OL based on what I saw on the tape. Vocal leader.

Will they win another game? Have no idea but based on the limited sample all of above are true so far.

Freedom for the guys in the field.
What program? It's roster dejour. I enjoy football high school, pro and whatever this is. But, loyalty, tell me to what or whom.
Don’t understand all of this bickering among fans. I’m a fan of Penn State football, not the fan of individual coaches. I root for whoever is in charge to be successful which would mean the team is successful. I rooted for Joe, I rooted for Bill, I rooted for James and now I root for Campbell. If your hoping the current coach fails your not really a Penn State fan IMO.

2026 a complete disaster (not Campbell's fault, Kraft's handywork) 2027 class currently ranks behind
Oregon, Ohio State, UCLA, Nebraska, Washington, MIchigan and USC (per rivals). That puts PSU #8 in the Big Ten. That's a lot of "coaching up" LOL. Richardson is the class of 2028 and has visits with at least 5 other programs scheduled. "We" landed Kahlil Taylor too.
The goal is not beating teams "without a pulse" it's excellence at the highest level!
If only there were a retired high school coach / AD in NE PA who could help recruit the coal region...

Maybe Campbell hasn’t had enough time to ruin Becht yet.

Kaka. Many complained about his decisions, but none of us wanted to go through 4-21 against Top 10 teams just to see him fail. He failed on his own and was shown the door with a big paycheck. Boo hoo.
It’s true…go back and read…many were taking great delight in the losses and now they’re suddenly super fans, fighting to defend the new coach.

They set the standard. Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana are looming. Can't wait to experience excellence at the highest level.

This is a can't miss season. Now that Michigan lost to WM PSU has 10 opponents "without a pulse." Don’t even have to worry about losing big games. Every team on the schedule will have 3 losses or more.

No one took great delight in the choke jobs that were ND and then Oregon. BGJ was pitiful. Then UCLA last year....why would anyone want to see him lose that and by doing so embarrass the program? But right on cue Jimmy did just that. By then it didn't matter whether you wanted him to lose because he gone.

You show how much of a creep you are when you talk about a coach that brought us so much success and got us about as close as you can get to the ultimate trophy. You’re spoiled and show you don’t deserve any better. When was the last time PSU won a championship? I bet you weren’t even born you brat.

And in case you other bums don’t get it-the people who support Franklin adore PSU which is why we’re angry he was fired and his story was ended so abruptly here. It makes reflects badly whether you see it that way or not.

How many titles did Joe Paterno win? Did we give him 11 years?

It’s like you all think we all became Alabama overnight.

Is this a parody post?

Franklin had many opportunities but did not win big games time after time.

Joe Paterno had undefeated teams his 3rd and 4th years as Head Coach and had a great overall career.

Franklin had the 3rd worst all time record against Top 10 teams amongst coaches with 25 games played against them since the AP poll started in 1936. He was knocking down $8.5 million his last year as coach and got a massive payday for getting canned. Cry me a river.

That was like 50+ years ago.

Coaches like Franklin don’t just grow on trees.

If Campbell wins a championship than it shows he was the right decision, but it’s been discussed ad nauseum. It’s resources not coaching that we need to worry about.

The arms race started and we’re late to the party and all of the adoration for Campbell warranted or not will not change that.

96% of the country would be thrilled to have Franklin. I was ok that we didn’t win the Natty every year. 10-11 wins was fine.

The fans who “expected more,” I’m not sure what evidence you have that suggests we were punching below our weight class.

We’re now ranked lower the Big 10 pecking order than we ever had been with Franklin so you tell me.

And that post about a legacy defining moment in the first game was embarrassingly puerile and naive . That must have been Landon Tangwell’s account.

I’m just angry with how PSU fired-it doesn’t seem very Penn State to me.

We were always success with honor and we didn’t become win at any cost until Kraft.

So tell us again, what is your point with all this posting? Like—what message are you trying to get across? It seems like a bunch of meaningless whining, but maybe I missed it. Spell it out.
What is the point of your posts
It’s funny that you’re so emotional about Franklin’s firing. 😂
Isn't "excited" an emotion? You profess to be "excited" about Matt Campbell as the PSU coach. Why are you so emotional?
When it comes down to it, you seem upset that people are excited and hopeful about Matt Campbell as head coach. Why?
Not upset, I think it's childlike and adorable. I also would throw in temporary.
I've stated ad nauseam, that I can't get "over my skis" about 2026, because the schedule gifts PSU 9 or 10 wins. Taken individually, of course it will be enjoyable. But it's not a true indicator that the program has progressed in relation to its position in the conference or nationally. When I see top 10 talent acquisition I will "be excited and hopeful." But if folks were being realistic, they'd acknowledge that this program has some serious issues with it's foundation (centered around recruiting and NIL).
Franklin was fired for "underperforming," especially vs Ohio State and more recently Oregon. Giving up office space, the color of his shoe laces, embracing football alumni, and blue collar persona are endearing for certain......but talent acquisition is the bottom line.
If Franklin were still coaching here and he was gifted this schedule, winning 10 games would be predictably greeted with "we didn't beat anyone with a pulse."
So yes, I will enjoy victories over Marshall and Temple.....and pretty much the lower half of the conference. But excited and hopeful (in terms of achieving excellence at the highest level) will await and hinge on top 10 recruiting classes and signing top talent (not coach em up) from the portal.
