I’m going to pump the breaks on that a bit. We still have to see these guys perform against conference opponents as well as the OL. It’s one thing to break tackles against defenders who are less athletic and taking bad angles as opposed to defenders in the conference. Even MSU will be a step up in size and speed from our next two opponents.
I can see that, but he appears to be doing a good job. Hopefully he gets production out of the backs like he did with EJ last year.
Callahan and his RB coach recruited some great backs. Lucky was one of the top high school recruits in the country. I like Rule WAY better than Lucky and Barthel has him ready to go. I give BC a TON of credit on Helu. Helu had a posted 40 time of 4.8-4.9 on Rivals. Wrong.
It’s one game but Rule could end up being a great one. So much for the experts on here who trashed the kid and Barthel when we signed him.
Lacys high school film was ridiculously good. Size, speed and power. When he gave his verbal - signing day couldn’t come quick enough. I seriously doubt he was less than a 4 star when he gave his verbal to us. It was very obvious
Lucky was as high of a rated player as the program has gotten and Roy was a low three star IIRC. Roy is the one that ended up the fourth round draft pick.
Ameer was a 3 star being recruited as a CB by everyone else. He beat out several other higher ranked 4 star guys

Agree. No one was trashing Rule directly, but plenty were trashing Barthel for not bringing in good RBs.
So in a way, is that indirectly or unintentionally trashing Rule?
It might have been indirect but it intentionally was at least questioning Rule’s ability. Rule gave us the best first game showing of any freshman RB I’ve see in decades at NU.
He looks very good. To be fair, relying on a true freshman in the first game is something a program should seldom need to do. But I’m pleased to see the staff playing the best guy regardless of age
Lucky was still pretty good and not a bust. He just didn’t quite live up to his super-hype is all.

Marlon had a pretty nice junior year, but then had nagging injuries his last year. As for the worst running back room in Nebraska history, Jaquez Yant played a lot in 2021. He ended up with a few hundred yards at FAMU before hitting the bricks.
My problem is the offense is experienced and pretty good all around. Why roll with a bunch of inexperienced backs? They also started Mozee? Who should be third?
Love how Rule looks, but this what a Big 10 rb coach should be doing, at a minimum. The fact we are shooting off fireworks for having a freshman rb look good speaks volumes of where people's mindsets are.
People just re-write history because they thought he would be a 1st round pick. He ran for 1,000 yards and had 75 catches in one season. That is pretty dang good.
I’m not sure Rule will be the #1 Rb on the depth chart. They clearly wanted to get him experience but many if not most of the play calls when he was in the game were run plays. I’m wondering if Rule’s lack of experience in the offense might limit the playbook and Mozee clearly looks to me like the best receiving option of the 3 backs.
He was soft. Somebody else mentioned “nagging injuries”. Wouldn’t practice. Would take himself out of a game if he had a boo boo. Rarely will I criticize RBs for sitting because of injuries but I knew one of the team Drs at the time.
Yant had one big run against a team that was way worse than NU, who finished three and nine that season. When he actually played against a defense that knew what it was doing, it was clear he didn’t know what he was doing.
Who is the best RB that Barthel has recruited after 4 seasons? Is it Rule, the guy that has played in just one career game against a G5 opponent? Is there anyone else we should consider for that title? This is year 4 and good RBs can play quickly, and Barthel’s RB recruiting showcase consists of one good game.
That has been the problem with Barthel. None of the guys he has recruited have produced at all. We are in year 4. Oh, he might have hit on Rule? Good, it’s about damn time. But it is just one game against a G5 opponent.
True, but if the youngest guy separates himself from the pack and possesses the maturity to take on the job, what else matters? His life experience appears to have prepared him for this moment.
I get it, and I meant no knock on Rule…. I’m saying if your roster puts you in a situation where you are needing a true freshman to be the best guy then you previously are failing at recruiting and developing. Once in a while yes a highly talented freshman will come through.
Who were the great RBs that Frost recruited? Riley? Two of our best RBs of the past 20 years were being recruited by everybody else as DBs. Rex and Ameer.
barthel hasn't done squat.. it took Dana to id Emmet, and while he does get credit for recruiting Rule, he's done nothing to develop him.. that kid is all natural talent. I can't believe anyone would have any reason to praise Barthel.. ugh.
So Barthel had nothing to do with developing EJ? He was a dancing machine when he started out here.
Can’t argue that anybody since Rex and Ameer is in the same league as those two. And they weren’t Heisman candidates. Just productive, reliable backs that we have not had since. At least for multiple seasons. Obviously Emmett had one great season last year. Ozigbo also looked the part for one season.
Rex and Ameer both had multiple years in the NFL. I would say they were more than just reliable. In actuality I can only think of a couple of former Husker backs who were elite talent wise. Probably just Rozier, LP and maybe Ahman. Craig was an amazing fit in the WCO. ALL of those guys were recruited to a perennial top ten ranked program. Expecting Barthel to recruit guys like Rozier to a 5-7 win team is probably illogical.
