He doesn’t seem like a fit in that deluge of a cesspool. They clearly have administrative problems that go beyond the football program.

I agree it was a bad move. The Utah region has seen a ton of football success in the last 10 years. BYU, Utah, Boise State have all been good for a while now. He had a great gig but I do wonder if he saw a gap forming between the SEC/Big 10 and all the other conferences. The TV money just isn't competitive for the Big 12, Pac ?, ACC

I hope he phones it in, gives Entitled Blowhard U. a couple of very mediocre seasons, then rides off with a nice big golden parachute.
I talked to some Utah guys at the Vegas bowl. They said he was 100 percent going to retire until Michigan called.
Admittedly I know very little about him and didn’t follow Utah, but he looked like someone that had not slept much in quite awhile and was crazy stressed (though that could have been due to how terrible the team looked). Said to myself that it looks like a guy that may not make it past year 2 there. In over his head.

I don't understand the anger at programs who actually win...seems misplaced when your own team sucks *** while wasting millions upon millions upon millions to fire coach after coach after coach. What a husker fan would give to have won a national title a couple of years ago instead of seeing us annually win our super bowl against Rutgers. Our anger should be directed at the incompetents and scammers in charge of our mess and not at programs who have done well.

My disdain for Michigan has nothing to do with Nebraska being bad at football. I couldn't stand those miserable blowhards when Nebraska was going 60-3 and winning national championships. I will root for Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin to lose until they put me in the ground.

Thought it was a very weird move by both parties when it happened. Now did I think they'd need help to beat Weatern Michigan? No.. but the fit seemed off from the begining and if he was going to continue coaching, why not just stay at Utah? Dude has to have a cool couple ten mil. in the bank, so he didn't need the money.

I thought Utah was encouraging him to retire and had his replacement set up. If Michigan comes calling with bags of cash, why not?
I mean in the present tense as in right now. The team is far from a playoff contender by the looks of it and your coveted 5 star QB is a bust. The money certainly is nice but this seems like the college version of Pete Carroll coaching the Raiders.
I’ve heard some rumors that he was being forced out because they think the guy that replaced him was the reason for their recent success and they didn’t want to lose him.
The truth probably lyes somewhere in between. The DC that took over was the “ coach in waiting “. So probably both situations are true.

These guys are all very wealthy and at his age he could disappear and live a great life. He wants the big show, the attention, the national notoriety. So.....good luck with it. I will never feel an ounce of sorrow for a guy filling his ego. Just my opinion.....

It’s interesting that Whittingham’s first game at Michigan and Riley’s first game at Nebraska both ended with a completed Hail Mary pass as time expired.
I’m in the boat where I like Portnoy but also know he’s a blowhard.
Michigan is a lot like Nebraska. The program is in a fishbowl and new coaches are heavily scrutinized. The fans are maniacal and the program is constantly under the microscope. Fat boosters rule their landscape and they enjoy the blue blood status to their advantage.
However, Michigan falls back on its academics and are smug bitches. Nebraska doesn't have nearly the academics or endowment and of course Michigan is still relevant in the sport.
