We need a big nickel. Kind of a hybrid safety/ linebacker that can run or crash the edge.

I'm hoping at some point Merritt and maybe Chambliss get majority snaps. Merritt still looks a bit undersized but he gets there and makes the plays. I like him....

The kid is special. Now that he's getting film out there, it wouldn't surprise me if he gets offers from the big boys during the season. Meanwhile, our coaching staff, like the others before, are in constant win now mode. They will play a high floor vet transfer over the more talented kid. We see it every year.

Different number, different scheme same player and results. Gotta be better or recruit to a level where you don't have to play him that many snaps. To my Rhule haters that is DEFINITELY on him. It's year 4. Come on...

Gotta figure out how to compensate for that with our scheme cuz every OC in the B1G is gonna find him. I do think a couple of times he was supposed to have help and the young guys didn’t get there. Charles made some mistakes.

Dudes on Average Joes said after Ohios first three drives they saw more Evans and McDougle and more press coverage.

I think you are right. Dawson was highly regarded out of HS and if he shows like I think you are right someone is gonna offer him a big bag. Hopefully we can keep him.

OT: I watched a lot of football this weekend and being honest the lack of athletes on our DL kinda stuck out to me. Outside of Jashear we have a bunch of plodders up front. The kid from UCLA is pretty versatile and ok but isn't a plus athlete. I do see his value though. The kid from BC Stoutamire is the walking definition of a plodder. He better be great against the run because against the pass...crickets. Lenhardt is easy to root for and he is physically imposing but man he's another who seemingly struggles with movement.

I'll be honest I look forward to seeing Nwareai and Jones coming in the game. They do represent the type athletes up front that can cause some havoc on passing downs. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how 44 looked as well. Hope he can keep it up.

Our starting front 4 is designed to stop the run. I hope they can do that at a high level. Then get some athletes on the field to rush the passer.

I saw Stoudmire several times getting push against double teams on pass plays. Had to look the number up to see who it was after the second time I saw it. I think we’re still all waiting for the next Suh and we probably won’t live long enough to see it at NU.

Suh, Prince, etc etc are the reasons I think we should have kept BC and let him replace Cosgrove.

We probably won't see the next Suh. Hell I'm not greedy. Give me the next Crick, or Ty Robinson, or Malik Collins. **** gimme a Nash and a John Parella right now and I'd take it lol.

I do like Jashear and what I've seen from 44 SO FAR.

I'm no mind reader but I think coaching staffs for over 10 years have been on the hot seat to the point that they care mostly about today and not much about the future. Sure they won't say that, but they'll choose a steady vet over a more talented young kid pretty much every time. Ultimately, we wind up being OK but not good enough year after year.

The NFL draft would tell us our talent level has been dogshit, and that plays out in the games. We are about as successful in the draft as Rutgers and Maryland the last 10 years and they are our peers in the conference. I don't think the coaches have much young talent, and dumb, undersized young guys are worse than veterans.

And we aren't ok. We are 20-43 in conference the last 8 years, 1-30 against top 25 the last 10 years. There are 18 teams in the big 10, right now we are 13th and have been between 13-18th the last 10 years, if the conference had fully existed. Our investment and revenue is around 4th. Disgusting

Also consider no consistency in approach. When a new defense or offense is being installed every 3rd year, the coaches will play the more veteran players who had already learned a collegiate D and now know 2. We really like seeing Jeremiah Jones out there. Cam Leonard makes it more likely Jones will see a favored down and distance when the defense is get QB.

Collins was under appreciated by most and Pelini didn’t get enough credit for finding and signing him. Still in the league I think.

Why does Shavers still have a club on his hand? I thought that thing had healed up by now.

Not disagreeing at all, but I'm hopeful that Aurich isn't a guy that is going to watch Guthrie get beat all season with more talented guys standing on the sidelines. He seems like a reality based coach.

The play got a little better in the second half, but we looked slow. Merritt looked good.
I believe it was more of a paralysis by analysis we saw early. Kids not playing with their hair on fire and afraid of making a mistake.
Hopefully they show more speed-a better football acumen and better aggressiveness this week.

It was sooo easy to tell that guy would be great. I never understood why he more people didn't want him. That dude was big, quick, twitchy and mean in HS. I also think he was a great HS wrestler as well. I'll be honest his HS tape reminded me of a young Warren Sapp. He was THAT dominant.

Butler did it. I tell you what if we don't have anyone better we need to look at Addison who I actually love. I'm hoping Benning was gonna be the guy but injury struck.

All last year they kept trotting that guy out there. I actually was being patient with him early but man it got so bad that my patience was gone.

I'm hoping somebody beats him out. He's a liability in pass coverage and average at best against the run.

I'm hoping we're past playing people because they're "great guys" or "team first" or "do things the right way." I worry Rhule cares about that stuff above everything else. Those factors are important but end of the day you can't get beat or everything else is irrelevant.

His backup running back was suspended for behavior last season, then beat his pregnant girlfriend, and is still playing. And even worse, said running back is VERY average. Fortunately winning doesn't require horrible humans anymore....I think Indiana had a team of disciplined, team oriented guys. If we have deviants on the team now it is probably because recruiting is lacking and that is not a good excuse.

This is in no way defending Nelson, however, I’m just LOLing at your fairytale idea about teams with nothing but great human beings. High level college football teams have been full of questionable character athletes forever. ADs, coaches, and fans have turned blind eyes and played mental gymnastics regarding questionable players on their respective teams for ages. Not saying it’s a good thing in any way, but your head is buried in the sand if you think otherwise.

Liked what I saw from Merritt in limited time last year

Liked what I saw from him on Saturday

Not sure we have a safety worth mentioning

Maybe Benning if he put on 25lbs and shaved 0.5 off his 40 in the offseason?
