USC commitment Ethan Sanchez: lost a lot of respect for Beamer on this one.

He participated in rookie minicamp with the 49ers.

Unless you draw a VERY fine line between this and LSU situation, we should not be doing this.

Not a good look and doesn't pass the smell test.
But SB will have a normal sounding reason for spitting in the face of the SEC and being hound dog junior.

Per Beamer the SEC approved the move and we had a roster spot available so no players were cut.

I still don’t like it. There is a distinction bw the LSU scenario, but only a very fine distinction.

We can’t take much of a moral high ground.

Shows that the 3 kickers we had on campus = 0 kickers on campus.

That shows those guys beamer has no confidence in them- which might be deserved.

It's sad that we can't recruit a high quality high school kicker.
Yes, it also means our kickers suck

So, what is the distinction between this and LSU? Our guy didn't sign a contract yet?

Correct. That's ultimately a pretty big distinction.

It is a distinction but at any other time in CFB history, it would have been ludicrous to think that a player who had declared for the draft and then participated in a rookie NFL minicamp could go back to college only because he didn't have an NFL contract. It only doesn't seem ludicrous by comparison to LSU bringing in players who actually played in NFL preseason games.

And, let's be honest, if none of this other stuff was going on and it was LSU trying to bring back a player who had declared for the draft and participated in an NFL rookie minicamp, our fans would be dragging them for it.

If the only thing we're going to ding guys for is signing a contract, then we shouldn't even bother. They all left college, declared for the draft and participated in activities with NFL teams. Just because some players were marginally better enough to sign a contract isn't much of a distinction to me

The whole thing is absurd, but signing a contract and getting paid is a very large distinction beyond just trying out. It's a glorified pro day for one team.

I don't see much of a distinction. Those contracts don't mean a whole lot, as evidenced by the players being unemployed not long thereafter.

Two years ago. Shoot, even one year ago, it would have been unthinkable that a team could bring back a player who had declared for the draft and participated in NFL team activities. It's always been "you declare for the draft and you're done". End of story. There was no debate or argument about it either side. Everyone understood and accepted it. Forget actually participating in NFL team activities of any kind.

To the academic side of things, the drop/add deadline for USC was 8/24. This whole thing is an embarrassing sham.

I'm just disappointed to see Beamer line himself up firmly with those who are destroying what remains of the fabric of college football.

South Carolina will likely be mocked for doing this for the whole season and beyond. Also, I thought recently Coach Beamer said that he was not going to anymore players to the current roster. It brings me concerns about when he says things if they are credible.

We should be mocked. It's a mock of college football and it's a mock of whatever remains of any academic aspect of the student athlete model.

IMO, he is walking a very thin line, i am guessing the kickers at SC are really bad for him to even consider this..

It's an EXTREMELY fine line. Folks all over X are now lumping us in with LSU, and rightly so. To the non-USC fan, there really is no distinction between us and LSU, both bringing in players who participated in NFL activities.

Participated in NFL activities? Errrkay. Did he sign a pro contract? I’ll wait…

This whole situation just shows why college football is irretrievably broken. Until about 45 seconds ago, USC fans were united in agreement that bringing back players who have NFL participation/affiliation was wrong for college football. Until we brought in a player ourselves who might be able to help us. Suddenly, our fans carve out an exception for our particular situation.

Extrapolate that rationale to all 130+ FBS teams and you get the mess we're in. Everyone wants adherence to the rules....until their own program from non-adherence.

I've wondered how familiar Beamer is with the truth for a while. His comment on Stewart being "really close" to playing is patently absurd. Stewart has not participated in any full contact football since the Clemson game last year.

Make this scenario involve Clemson and think about how you would be reacting.

You can stop waiting now.

Its a change in subject, so I apologize. But this shows what I was saying about Kiffin. Everyone is united in hating something, then we do it (or something similar) and we're split at best, if not supporting it.

I still think this would happen if Kiffin were named our coach tomorrow.

I mostly agree, but I can't ever see myself supporting Kiffin, even as our head coach. He's just a bad person and bad human all around.

But I agree on the relativistic mindset towards rules/standards most fans have.

I’m not really sure how this compares to any of LSU stuff. Sanchez is a transfer. He went to a mini camp try out for one day and didn’t make it. He was never paid or part of any NFL roster. Wright signed a 3-year/$3.125 million contract with the Eagles. Every piece of the Sanchez transfer was a completely legal transfer.

Exactly. Let's just play football. I have been saying just let the Class of 22 Guys that are suing play and move on with it. The 5 of 5 Rule is in place now so that everyone should be clear on what the ramifications of declaring for the draft are moving forward.

Sanchez declared for the draft. That makes him (or should make him) ineligible to play college football anymore.

End of discussion.

The courts are saying otherwise. I don't know why fans and administrators are beating their heads up against the wall about this. Lawyers are getting paid though. Judge should make the lawyers for both sides get in a room and don't come out until they have a deal. No need to ruin the season over this.

Once upon a time it was illegal to accept money to play.

Say, does anyone ever discuss X and O stuff on here beyond 'the oline sucks/sucked/will suck' or is it just relentless arguing over drama in the name of gamecock sports.

Me personally, I don't like Kiffen because of his character; I don't give a crap if he brought in some guys that signed an nfl contract, Dabo either for that matter. Given the climate of college football this is a silly argument.

Beamer: when in Rome. Damned if he does and damned if he don't.

Back to the "declare for the draft": that was always tied into signing with an agent. That was the main item that disqualified the athlete, since using a agent implied you were no longer an amateur.

I can't see where declaring for the draft automatically disqualfies someone as an amateur and now NIL has further muddied those waters. If you don't get picked or signed, then you are an UDFA.

It also seems plausible that guy could attend an NFL camp and still be considered an "amateur". Just not sure how NFL teams would handle this.

The LSU guys that everyone is wringing their hands over were born in September and October of 2003 respectively. So, they fall squarely within the 2022 class. Yes, they declared for the draft. However, the NCAA could have announced this earlier so the players could make fully informed decisions or they could have announced it later (Right before the football season) to exclude the 2022 class. Both sides have valid legal arguments. They can waste valuable time in courtrooms or work this out and move forward.

Playing college football is not a right. Sometimes life isn't fair. Figure out your next steps and move on without suing to change the rules. That's my problem with it.

Didn't ever sign any contract? and the SEC approved it, I say play the kicker and make some field goals and win some games!

The same people always posting about how crucial this year is for Beamer's future here, which I agree with, this is a big year, then post how they don’t like when Beamer makes moves, showing he understands how pivotal it is LOL.
