After Leach's death I remember thinking that we would be in the wilderness for at least 3 years because Leach had recruited players that fit his system, but were not necessarily the players you want in most modern offenses
This is fake news for a variety of reasons:
1 - It did not happen at Texas Tech or Washington State;
2 - The whole fall apart after a niche only works when you are going to run to pass, not pass to run. A passing offense can be converted to a running offense quickly. But either one is made easier by #3....
3 - The transfer portal. No longer does it take multiple years to install scheme.
Nah. It was more the boosters Arnett and Peterson fired everyone and changed the offense to the 1951 power run game, wasting a 9-4 veteran roster
Correct, and everyone knows it. And it's not the fact that he changed......like I said above with the transfer portal, you can, much easier........it's the fact that he changed THAT team, with all those upperclassmen coming back. And even worse, he had this same shltty attitude toward Leach and the Air Raid that our fans do. He thought he could do better.
And it's not just the offense, he gutted a bunch of 1st and 2nd year players, that likely would have helped in future years (like 2024) once they'd matured. And then Lebby did it again when he got here.
Agree the Arnett move was a terrible idea and he made things much worse when he completely changed our offense, but the chances of someone coming in that could have kept the Leach system going was very slim.
They were already on campus.....the entire staff minus Leach was intact. They deserved to stay, because it was the SITUATION, not Arnett's deservedness, that got him the job. He really had no right at that time to change the offense, and that should have been made clear by leadership. But we had no AD, and folks were emotional, so it didn't. We simply anointed Arnett as savior because the RuNdAbAwLeRs screamed the loudest and hated Leach.
He could have changed the offense the following year, had it fallen apart, and nobody would have blamed him. But I guarantee we're better than 5-7 had he not changed, and he would have been head coach another year.
No one is trying to polish it, I'm the one that was saying it was a turd
But it wasn't a turd in December 2022. MSU created the turd by their series of decisions.
