Yeah I'm worried about SDST (and why schedule games like this?)

Not well done by the AD to schedule this game. If you are going to schedule a FCS then schedule a creampuff. A team like SDSU has a mobile QB, won 70-7 yesterday, and beat our old friends New Hampshire 41-3 last year. And they already played a game.

Hopefully the Cats take care of business, but what is the possible basis for scheduling a stud FCS team like this with a game the week before that presents a risk of a loss?

I don’t think the 70-7 score carries much significance. Last year, Stetson lost to Harvard 59-7 and Chattanooga 63-0. They are a non-scholarship team, and I am not sure this was much more than a scrimmage for SDSU. Having said that, extensive video highlights of the game are on YouTube, and SDSU looks well coached and competitive. They won’t be a patsy, but the Cats should have positional advantages pretty much across the board. I think NU get more than 200 yards on the ground, and should win if they can avoid first game screw ups.

I'm guessing we run the ball a fair amount, which hopefully puts us ahead early. We don't want to show the full playbook in the first game.

Yes we do, if we’re struggling. I don’t buy this “don’t show the playbook” stuff except for true trick plays. Sometimes I wonder if we interpret the offense not being prepared to run the entire playbook or all the complex at the line adjustments in the first game or two, was the coaches trying to keep secrets.

These schedules are typically set up years in advance so all the recent stuff was not in play when the games were scheduled That said, SDSU has been good for a while.

SDSU have not had a losing record in 15 years, and from 2021 to 2024 (when the game was likely scheduled) went 51-8.....

I have no problem playing this team. If NU really wants to contend for titles they shouldn't be afraid to play top competition. Of course that doesn't explain scheduling Holy (Crap) Cross next year.

That said, it is one of those games that offers little upside in outside opinions, If we win, we were supposed to beat up on an FCS schools, But if we lose...

There may be some intrinsic value (especially if we win) to having played a well coached, disciplined team that might be slightly less physically gifted. The film study over the bye week will be more valuable than, let's say, the film SD has of themselves against Stetson.

Just not as happy playing them first game when they already have a game under their belt. If it was our second game as well .... but it is not

I share OP's sentiment...obviously it's early in the season but SDSU is currently ranked #2 in FCS poll. They are a winning program with a winning culture.

I do not remember when this game was actually booked but it wouldn't surprise me if Braun had something to do with it (I've noticed that a lot of "promoted" coaches from one program to another get their old team on the schedule).

If we win it's a nothing burger, if it's close we look foolish, and if we lose it's a giant boner.

Rooting for the nothing burger.

I'm not ready to count Colorado out but I guess we'll get a glimpse of them tonight. I know the national narrative is "Coach Prime sucks" but if we're listening to the national narrative then we may not love what we hear about NU...

He brings in a bunch of talent, It may not gel but it is a lot of talent

Can't wait to see Toledo pummel Fitz & Sparty tonight and instantly become MAC frontrunners, cementing our schedule as the absolute worst in the history of FBS football...although I guess the presence of Rutgers makes that impossible...

I think when some coaches don’t show the playbook it’s more like they haven’t practiced the complex plays enough to execute them properly. When you’re introducing a lot of new plays to the players, you don’t want them to get confused on the field. Kelly is in his first year and it will take a while for all the players to be on the same page with the new offense. I expected dynamic offense, but would not be surprised if it is simplified for the first game.
