Who can hand the ball off better? Na, but for real I don't expect either to crap the bed against this defense. More importantly, how does a guy like Taron Dickens end up at NIU? His stats are absolutely insane, 51:5 TD/INT ratio, 3508 yards passing, 321 rushing, and this was done in 9 games. **** is bonkers.

No way they're Deacon Hill bad. I see Spencer Petras, but with a much better oline than he had. Iowa will lean heavily on the run against an overmatched opponent. Over 200 yards rushing and less than 200 yards passing. One of the QB's will look much better/worse than the other giving the staff something to point to when they anoint next week's starter.

Will one out perform the other? Or will they be even?
I picked both play great but I think that poll choice should have read both play well. I mean great is greater than 65% completion, moving the chains with pass plays on 3rd down, no turnovers, making almost all the right decisions, seeing the field very well

Given how bad NIU's defense is, I expect both QBs to play very well and we'll be no closer to answering the question than we were before the game. That's what happens when you allow a competition to stretch into the season. I love KF and TL, but they should have picked a QB following Kids Day and allowed that guy to get all the 1 reps to develop a good rapport with the rest of the offense.

I fear a repeat of 2008 where it took 4 games to figure out who the #1 was and then we went into the B1G season and lost the first 2 games because of it. Granted, we finished well and it extended into the magical 2009 season....but it could have been avoided if they'd named Ricky in camp and allowed him to get all the reps.

When you face an “overmatched” opponent, it is time to get both the run AND pass game in sync.

Please, PLEASE do not “lean on the run.”

I've already had a long conversation with my therapist (whom my wife refers to as the_rapist), about what medication I should take to help me deal with the obligatory posts about how we need to stay vanilla until conference play.
We have, imo, a great receiving corp.
Please ... puhleeeeeze KF, use that offense and live rent-free in our rival's heads. Screw culture and classiness!!!!

I see this game being much closer than people are expecting right now. It almost always goes that way. KF just will not allow it unless it is a combination of offense/defense and special teams scores. That means that the QB's will get a lot of hand-off and lateral throw work. I will be pleasantly surprised if he allows the offense to put up 40 or more

Last year I think they were 65% run and 35% pass. Against Albany in the first game last year they ran 53 for 310 vs just 16 passes for 48 yards... So..Yeah.
…And yeah, I hope it’s much different this game 1.

If we aren’t showcasing an air attack on Saturday we again, obviously, won’t have a significantly-improved passing game in 2026. And THAT will be very sad.

I think people hoping for a significantly improved passing game in 2026 might be in for some significant disappointment.

Yes. And especially because Christiansen was never very impressive. But that's KF. If you had him choose between Deacon Hill, Spencer Petras, and Chuck Long you know he'd go with Hill.

And that's one of the reasons KF is good but not great. I'll never understand it. He worked for Fry for nine years and saw how Hayden loved to put up points, like most players and coaches do. But not KF. I'll never forget him raggin' on Beathard for scoring a late TD in an easy win over Purdue. That's BS. If the Hawkeyes could put up 60, that's what Hayden wanted to do. If the Hawkeyes can put up 60 next Saturday, KF will want to keep to half that if he can. And that, too, is BS.

BTW: Yes, run the ball, but pass the ball too. Iowa needs to show off its TEs and its WRs. Iowa needs to get them invested immediately. Lester needs to prove his offense can and will throw the ball all over the place, and that means launching it down the freakin' field, not across it.

Why do you feel this way?
Several reasons:

1) The Iowa QB situation is still weak and unsettled.

2) The strength of this offense is still the oline, running backs, and tight ends.

3) These first 2 reasons make it even more likely for a risk averse staff to lean into the run game and short passing game just as we've seen the last 7 years or so.

4) As an Iowa football fan I have been conditioned to feel this way.
