Hutmacher, Bullocks, Toure, Stoll, Garrett Nelson, Singleton. Have to think most of these guys get signed to a practice squad. AMart was cut by the Niners.

A little reassuring that our lack of success since 2016 seems to be mirrored by lack of production in the NFL. It probably is just a talent issue combined with extra pressure and expectations from a very invested fan base, and a difficult conference. Hopefully our next coach understands you need ballers to win, a baller is always a baller. Emmitt was always Emmitt from day 1...coaches just didn't notice.

So I saw that teams can't be punished for playing players trying to get their last year of eligibility. Can any of these guys return to NU?

The B1G has prohibited it, along with the SEC and a couple other conferences.

However, a TE from Miami is suing so he can return.

At this point, don't rule anything out.

I think a judge ruled that the conferences can't punish a school for a player returning. So they can ban it but can't punish anybody who does it. Sounds very college football.

Actually we need better culture in our program. Which at Nebraska, can only be done by recruiting more Nebraska boys.

The NFL is moving towards 3 TE, power running game...forcing the two high safeties up into the box to defend the run with heavy play-action. If we had a genius coach we could certainly build a big oline with regional kids..maybe not Nebraska but Dakotas, Iowa, Nebraska Wyoming kids. We could probably find a couple of a NFL quality TEs, and mix in some qb power run with a big qb from the region. Control the clock, keep the game close....then spend 40 million on the fastest most aggressive defense you can buy from all over the country...make them all play special teams as well. This is kind of the Iowa model though...probably need to gravitate towards a qb run game instead of a pro-passing and hope those NFL TEs are ok blocking and not getting the ball as much in the pass game. The more time passes the more I think our identity is tied to the QB run game.

I bet Stoll is picked up. McVey popularized 13 personnel. Nine tight ends were taken in the first three rounds of the last draft and 22 in the entire draft. That’s the most since 2002

Yeah, but going that route and the Huskers will never be top 25 in the recruiting ratings every year!
Priorities!

K-Stater AMart didn't play well at all in the last game apparently.
He played just well enough for them to want to sign him to the practice squad without having to worry too much about someone else taking him. He actually had some great throws when I watched a replay of one of their games last night. His receivers dropped several easy catches, had trouble getting open at times and his O line was not good.

Pretty much sums up why NU is a bad team and gets steam rolled by anyone with a pulse.
We had more than enough talent to avoid the humiliation of getting beat by Minnesota the last few years. Donnie and Dylan being gone hopefully helps. That said, we have to do a better job of evaluating and acquiring talent.

This thread wasn’t meant to be about that though. I’m just interested in following guys I want to see succeed. Even getting a sniff on practice squads means you’re a helluva athlete. Kenny Bell spending his whole career on practice squads should tell us that. We’ve had some good players but not enough of them and certainly not enough elite ones recently.

Developing your players is most important

We do precisely none of that

Nebraska doesn’t have a strong football culture at the high school level. Numbers down. Kids aren’t even going out for football in many high schools
Why is that as was not a problem years ago. So many RB's from Omaha, linemen from both small and large towns. Are the numbers down due to potential injuries? Soccer? Poor coaching? Just curious.

Years ago we relied a great deal on players from Nebraska, Iowa and other Midwest states and picked up a few skill players from Texas, California, etc. Now we rely on getting most from states outside of the Midwest. Not easy to recruit kids from the South as a different culture. Lot of big money in the SEC area. Who knows what college football will look like 5 to 10 years from now.

Back in the day, we took dudes that were 6-2, 250 and built them into 300 pounders that could move. Nowadays, they’re primarily looking for a finished product out of high school. Less willing to take chances on guys that may not develop.

Hate to say it, but Iowa still does this with pretty good success. The lanky tight end with good feet who turns into an offensive tackle. If you can’t get 5 stars out of high school, you better develop some guys that can be really good performers by their junior and senior year.

We do some of that. I still contend that it’s more than that. Suh has had multiple Instagram posts on what he sees as the problems and he sees a lack of natural ability. He actually likes what Rhule has done with his staff changes and recruiting.

going into Year 4 we have 3 total multi-year starters with more than 1 season under their position coach/coordinator (Barney, Hunter, LL)

that is the antithesis of building/developing

Tom still recruited the heck out of Texas and California for difference making linemen. The list is fairly long of DTs and OTs with a center or two thrown in there. We have way more talent leaving the state than we used to. You had a Larry Station leave but we WERE the place to be for linemen until Tom and his staff retired.

As far as RBs...not a ton of brothers out there playing soccer in Nebraska.

Less OL guys is mostly due to pure laziness. I can't speak a ton about lower levels, but I can say that most good Class A schools also have a bunch of HUGE dudes walking around the hallways that would have been linemen back in the 80s/90s but do absolutely nothing now.

We’ve developed some walkon Johnny Tryhards in to NFL practice squad players. The problem is we need to recruit more guys with better upside athletically IMO. I think we landed some 3-4 star guys over the past 10 years who didn’t have high enough ceilings. We need more Elijah Pritchetts.

They’re really good at social media and video games. Lots of mommies don’t want their babies getting their bells rung.
