Anyone know why he transferred to a public school? Seems like he would want better coaching and competition going into college.

I know Pope loves the portal, but I think it might be wise for him to try one recruiting cycle where he goes all in on freshmen. Just land the #1 class and put them in the pros for street cred. If he's here long term, it would be worth doing so that he has a few lottery picks to point to for future recruiting.

We have the money to three about $5 to 6 million at a few elites.

I would disagree personally. Older wins and wins more often, it just does. I also think Popes temperament (or lack there-of) is better suited for older, more self motivated players. Last year the two oldest college football teams were Indiana and Miami.

Disagree.

High school recruiting is already de-valued as is and will be further devalued by 5 for 5. Go get the best players to win now — sucks that those guys are in the portal but they are.

If you’re talking the tippy top high school guys some of those are still difference makers but you usually need an ELITE recruiter to land those. Pope isn’t an ELITE recruiter — he’s just an okay one.

Pope's sweet spot in recruiting high school players should probably be developmental guys in the 20-40th ranked range that he hopes can become contributors post Freshmen year, while swinging for 1-2 targeted 5 star guys (not every 5 star listed on the service). Then everything else, portal, veteran leadership. I just think he isn't elite enough at recruiting to land a top high school class, boatloads of NIL money or not.
