Ole Miss and State receive $4400-$5500 per student from IHL.

Other schools are receiving up to $12,500 per student.

Time to close MUW and Valley. Alcorn and Delta State should be put on notice. Hell, Jackson State has dropped nearly 40% in student enrollment since 2020.

Mississippi has got to stop rewarding failure and accepting mediocrity.

Alcorn State Appropriation per FTE: $10,138
Delta State: $12,574
Jackson State: $8,801
Mississippi State: $5,538
MUW: $10,899
Valley: $11,451
USM: $8,843
Ole Miss: $4,409

Mean: $6,606 (only two below)

There is some talk about bringing this up in the upcoming legislative session. Doubt anything dramatic happens in an election year.

Kind of makes sense since we have so many more students, what are the total amounts per school? Those smaller schools need the funds to maintain their facilities, but I agree that about 4 of those schools need to go.

I wish there was a good solution that would help instead of hurt the surrounding areas. Closing MUW or MVSU without some plan for what happens to the campus would badly hurt Greenwood and Columbus when both are already hurting enough.

Do you give MVSU to Delta CC for a new campus? Tear it all down and use as an industrial super site? Retrofit them all into Data Centers? Does MUW become permanent MSMS? Someone smarter than me will have to figure that out before any consolidation happens.

I have a stat that will make your head hurt. Mississippi has 23 public degree-granting institutions: 8 four-year universities and 15 two-year colleges. We rank 35th in population, but roughly 12th in the country in public institutions per capita.

The issue is not necessarily the campuses. It is the amount of duplicated administration required to run 23 separate institutions. That means 23 presidents, along with separate HR, finance, IT, procurement, and administrative structures.

The state seriously needs to look at consolidation. ICC and Northeast. MUW into Mississippi State. MVSU and Delta State. Meridian, EMCC, and ECCC.

Keep the campuses where they make sense, but combine administration.

And JUCO sports can stay, but state appropriations should not fund athletics. If the programs can support themselves through fees, fundraising, sponsorships, and ticket sales, have at it.

I imagine one factor the reason OM and MSU are lower is due to the amount of OOS students. With OM currently having 59% of its students form OOS they are recieving less in-state dollars.
Ding-ding-ding!

You win!

There is actually a funding formula - pity that IHL doesn't share it with the general public.

Nevertheless, we must rage on!

Consolidate or Close'em up. NOW!

Or, at all. There have been zero public 4-year universities that have closed in this country in the past 50+ years. Maybe one or two have consolidated into an already existing campus under the same university system.

Therefore, racking your brain over how you can close multiple such institutions in a single state is a complete waste of time. Will never happen.

Complaining about how many IHL dollars they get compared with one another also ignores a very large elephant in the room - where the IHL gets that money from in the first place. Hint: a very large amount of it doesn’t come from Mississippi.

I would say merge ECCC and Meridian. Close Valley and MUW. No need for that area to have Valley, MDCC and DSU.
I’m not sure why Coahoma exists. There may be a perfectly valid reason and I’m interested to hear it. But looking at the territory map, it’s territory is only one county, and it sits right between the Miss Delta region and Northwest regions, which have 17 counties between them.

I doubt if anyone in our state government is smarter than you. I don't mean that as an insult to you.

Everybody always blames administration. Just a blanket catch all for jobs you don’t understand. Just like anything else, chances are those jobs you list are based on some level of need. Somebody has to keep things running smoothly.

Cutting jobs just because reasons is the kind of dumb shlt DOGE tried and you see how that worked out. Not you or anyone else on this board is qualified to know if the administrations at these colleges are correctly staffed or not.

The only reason consolidation is a good thing is the combining of resources, not cutting them.

I am not saying we eliminate all administrative jobs. Obviously you still need HR, facilities, payroll, admissions, IT, finance, and academic leadership.

My point is that a lot of those functions can be consolidated. MUW could become part of Mississippi State. ICC and Northeast could operate under one system. You still keep people doing the work, but you eliminate unnecessary duplication and give those departments access to deeper resources.

And I actually can speak to this from experience. I work with universities and community colleges across Mississippi and was on three different campuses this week alone, including MVSU.

Valley has some incredible students, but it is competing for limited resources with Alcorn, Jackson State, Delta State, MDCC, Coahoma, and others. We absolutely need a strong institution serving the Delta. I just question whether we need multiple independent systems fighting over the same limited dollars.

I could actually see MVSU becoming the lead institution of a larger Delta system, potentially absorbing Delta State, MDCC, and Coahoma while preserving MVSU’s HBCU identity and mission. Instead of weakening Valley, consolidation could make it stronger. I have seen this plan actually discussed with major players.

I have also worked directly with college facilities departments for years. I have watched schools spend money replacing HVAC equipment that could have lasted much longer with proper staffing and preventive maintenance. At MUW, we were once part of a discussion about our company supplementing facilities support because they were losing technicians to Mississippi State. That is exactly the kind of situation where being part of a larger system could help.

I recently sat in a meeting with a community college that has a workforce program with a waiting list but cannot get the funding it needs, while another community college less than 30 miles away is effectively holding up those resources. Under one system, those dollars and programs could be deployed where the demand actually exists.

And for the record, I thought DOGE-style blanket job cutting was a bad approach too. Cutting positions simply to say you cut costs is not reform. Combining departments, sharing resources, improving maintenance, eliminating duplication, and directing money toward programs students actually need is reform.

So yes, I think consolidation deserves a serious discussion. Sorry for long post, but I know a lot about this and care.

I agree with those things. I thought you meant just firing people because they were allegedly useless. So many here have that opinion.

Now if the schools are not needed and just straight losing money, sure, time to cut.

proof that city/county elections have consequences.

A lot of Tax Payer funded failure in Mississippi.
