The CS8 went 5-6 in non-conference play Week 1. Week 2 could be rougher, with only two teams being the clear favorite.

It appears that Mt Zion has not been able to find a replacement opponent for Eisenhower and will get the forfeit win.

Temperatures again look good, with a projected high of 81 in Springfield on Friday and 80 in Joliet on Saturday.

Friday
Chatham (0-1) at Alton (0-1)
The Titans competed well with 6A ranked Normal West while losing 35-26. Alton was blown out by Belleville West 56-0. Coach Dambacher should get his 1st win. Chatham 39 Alton 6. Massey: Chatham 41-7.

Granite City (0-1) at MacArthur (1-0)
The Generals have a healthy starting QB back after losing him for the season in Week 1 last year, and they hammered Mattoon 48-0. Granite City lost to Freeburg 41-6. Mac goes to 2-0. MacArthur 42 Granite City 0. Massey: MacArthur 44-7.

Lincoln (1-0) at Marion (0-1)
Lincoln got an important win towards qualifying for the playoffs by beating Peoria Manual 40-20. Marion lost a close back and forth game to Carterville 28-24. A 220-mile road trip for the Railers. Marion is definitely a step up in competition for Lincoln and the Wildcats should win. Marion 38 Lincoln 10. Massey: Marion 48-14.

Springfield (0-1) at Collinsville (0-1)
Springfield lost 40-0 against 4A ranked Cahokia. Collinsville fell to Belleville Althoff 53-20. Collinsville is 7A, while Springfield has gone down from 6A to 5A. This is a pretty even matchup and should be a close contest. Taking Collinsville at home. Collinsville 24 Springfield 22. Massey: Collinsville 34-28.

East Peoria (1-0) at Lanphier (0-1)
East Peoria beat Southeast 55-30, while Lanphier lost to LaSalle Peru in a game that carried over to Saturday 59-14. As Lanphier is pretty comparable to Southeast at this point, East Peoria should improve to 2-0. East Peoria 48 Lanphier 14. Massey: East Peoria 42-14.

Mascoutah (1-0) at Southeast (0-1)
Mascoutah had a forfeit win over Eisenhower, so this will be their 1st actual game. Southeast had some success scoring against East Peoria but ultimately lost 55-30. As long as Mascoutah doesn't have too many "Week 1" issues, they should improve to 2-0. Mascoutah 47 Southeast 20. Massey: Mascoutah 48-14.

U High (0-1) at Mahomet (1-0)
The Pioneers lost to 4A Rochelle 55-14 in a game pushed to Saturday due to weather, while 5A Mahomet beat a solid Morton team 33-15. Mahomet 46 U High 7. Massey: Mahomet 45 U High 14.

Carbondale (1-0) at QND (0-1)
The Terriers routed Murphysboro 47-13, while QND was surprised on the road by St Teresa 16-7. This is one of the most interesting games of the Week. Carbondale has big play capabilities at QB, RB, and WR. They are also making a 240-mile bus ride to Quincy and were a heavily penalized team last season. The Raiders may be able to take an early lead if Carbondale comes off the bus slowly. QND needs to clean up some issues with their Offense from Week 1 and limit big plays on Defense. I think playing at home gives them an edge. QND 23 Carbondale 21. Massey: QND 35-20.

Ft Zumwalt East (MO) (0-0) at Jacksonville (1-0)
Based on Missouri's start date, this is Ft Zumwalt's Week 1. They were 3-7 last season but played a difficult schedule. If they were in Illinois, the Lions would be a 5A school. Jacksonville had fumble issues against Jerseyville but rallied to win 34-27. Expect a close game, but I like the Crimsons at home with the Lions also facing some "1st game" issues. Jacksonville 28 Ft Zumwalt East 24. Massey: Jacksonville 35-22.

Batavia (1-0) at Rochester (1-0)
7A Batavia beat a good 8A Maine South team 49-35, while the Rockets held off 7A Moline, in a lightning delayed game, 21-17. Rochester's defense played very well against Moline. Unfortunately, Batavia's offense will be much different than the Maroons Wing T, with talent similar to Montini's from last year. Rochester needs a much faster start than Week 1 and to clean up a lot of sloppiness on the offensive side or they could be out of it early. I expect better execution but not enough to pull off the upset. Batavia 42 Rochester 31. Massey: Batavia 46-19.

Saturday
SHG (1-0) at Joliet Catholic (0-1)
SHG led 20-3 in the 4th Quarter against 7A Lincoln Way Central, fell behind in the final minute 23-20, then won on an incredible pass reception in the final seconds 27-23. Joliet Catholic lost to defending 6A champion Fenwick 28-13. I am expecting a close but pretty low scoring contest that will go down to final minute. After seeing SHG QB Cam Brinkman make big plays at critical moments multiple times in his career, I am taking the Cyclones. SHG 20 Joliet Catholic 19. Massey: Joliet Catholic 37-14.

Their defense looked good too. Not necessarily saying they have a great defense, but it's the best I've seen Jacksonville's defense look in a Week 1 game in a while. The untimely lost fumbles (two first quarter fumbles in their own territory which led to Jersey scores, and one fumble while knocking on the door of their own TD) really hurt their coming out party, but they still showed heart and left Jersey County with a come from behind win.

Going to be a tough week to gauge much... but we do have some games that might tell us something... Jacksonville could stake a claim the easy pick for 2nd in the CS8 at this point with a win. SHG could cement what most believe is likely another "run to the title" type year for them, depends on the class split and draw per the usual but it's feeling like they've reloaded finally. Rochester could simply make a statement worth noting, and we'll learn if QND has anything to offer this year... Outside of that, let the clocks start rolling now I fear...

I didn't pick them, but this is a realistic chance for Springfield to get a win. If they lose, they will need a win outside of Lanphier and Southeast to be playoff eligible.

Lanphier and Southeast will both have played East Peoria after Friday, should give a good road map for their Week 4 game. The winner of the battle of the North End vs the East Side has a shot at 3 wins, while the loser is probably out of the playoff hunt.

crimsons were not very good tacklers last week. and i saw zero attempts to strip the ball. let's hope they improve this week. net-se.

The Batavia v Rochester game. Do you really think it will be "this" close? Comparing week 1 opponents, I feel Batavia had the tougher matchup with Maine South being a lot more dynamic compared to Moline. This is in no disrespect to Rochester, because they are extremely well coached. This feels close to the Rochester v Loyola game.

A 56-7 result would surprise me.

Derek has said that there are years where, with his available talent, he would never consider scheduling Batavia. The current Seniors and Juniors are two of the strongest classes Derek's had recently.

Having said that, I did not pick Rochester to pull off the upset.

Another good preview... I look forward to these!~ I don't know if the Rockets stay within 11 of Batavia... And there's no shame not staying within 11!~~ Rochester will be the cream of the CS8 going forward.

When I was at Chatham... Everyday was a football day including the weekends. Player, coaches and training were there on the weekends... I have no clue as to what the Titans figured out over the weekend and early part of the week... The coaches are primarily 2A coaches and Im sure football wasn't a 7 day a week gig where they came from. I will have to wait and see. Chatham should win but not sure if it will be by a large margin.

Looking forward to seeing the line play of the JCA/SHG game... The gut says JCA-7 but the head says different... Always go with the gut...

Wondering just how tough its been at QND??? After being dominated by StT Im hopeful a fire has been set under the Raiders... Playing with house money Im taking the Raidha's -5

All.... net-se.... Bumped into at Washington Park today a former Crimson from the class of 2021Drew Ezard. Played multiple sports at JHS and presently baseball over at UIS.

I believe he mentioned playing several positions in football but one brought up in our short conversation was a blocking TE. I asked any catches and laughing he replied in Coach Grounds ground and pound offense a few chances. ☺️ Ratsy

great kid and family. he lives 4 or 5 houses from coach grounds. i'm sure you watched his father play football, basketball and baseball in the late 80's. he was a really good athlete as well.

On a side note... Listening to the WMAY call is PAINFUL... There's a name with every call... be it a first down, td, penalty, score, time out, drive of the game, catch...or anything else. PAINFUL!!!! Example... "The Steak n Shake penalty..."

I had a feeling, and I picked the Rockets by 1... didnt see this outcome but hey, its far more terrifying for 4A to see...

give DL months to prepare and not expect him to destroy you. Loyola was on short notice. The rockets remain one of, if not the most, impressive public school football program in Illinois.

Edit: should note my Rockets pick this week against Rocket was Batavia 35-31... thought i had changed it. Regardless, knew it would be close. Just impressive either way for Rockets. Cant say enough good about the start of the year for them... 4A bracket has been put on notice, OGs like me already knew... it had been too long.

Nice bounce back win by QND.

It was a rough night for teams w/long bus trips (Carbondale, Lincoln, and Batavia).

Win is a win. I think at this point they'll take it. Hopefully build off that... gotta get it done early against Lanphier and start prepping for Jax in two weeks. Need that one for pride alone lol Regardless, good to see the boys worked, cleaned a few things up, and at least showed improvement week to week. Defense holding on late was good to hear!

How bout them dang Rockets! Its your night, Rochester. Tip of the cap to DL and the boys.

They have won 5A... and they could, but they don't have to, which just sucks for the rest of us with any hope of ever conquering 4A... not that QND would be that contender often, but man you never know! Lol

Now its SHGs turn yet again... same score tomorrow in favor of the Cycs?
