You got that right. Legislating common sense.

No - it’s not common sense. Common sense when life changing sums of money are on the table is to think of your family and fight when there’s legal basis - which there 100% is based on how the rule was drafted.

As a player, your not going to think about the good of preserving a semblance of amateurism in college sport when there are hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake. Guys like Kenny Fetcher never would’ve entered the draft if they knew this was an option.

The conferences, in turn, have every right to establish their own rules for the good of college sport and the perception of their league.

Isn’t this situation only for athletes who thought they had no eligibility left and declared for the draft only to find out later everyone gets a 5th year, and it would have been their decision to stay ?

if so, it’s only a one year thing and fair to give the extra year back to these players

I haven’t been paying close attention to CFB til lately but that’s my understanding of it.

That’s what triggerd it but looks like there are other circumstances they want to avoid as well.

Similar to Sorsby, are there any other examples of conferences declaring players (or coaches) ineligible that are otherwise eligible according to the NCAA?

Preemptively suspending a player/coach for breaking a NCAA rule before the NCAA completes an investigation is a different situation.

This is punishing a player/coach who isn’t under NCAA investigation.

Does this make all the European former basketball pros ineligible?
And presumably if not, why?
Why are football pros somehow different than basketball or any other sport professionals?

Lane was leading the way to bring good college players who couldn't make it in the pros back to the college game
From FootballScoop
>Kiffin and the Tigers reached out to multiple players on NFL rosters or their representation in an effort to get them to bring a lawsuit against the NCAA and return to school, per sources. This includes some of the players who ended up in the Louisiana lawsuit, which sources have pointed out wasn't tried in Baton Rouge by accident.<

I want to see how @NickRU714 feels about this:

Is this fair to undrafted free agents who get cut by the NFL team? Seems like drawing this card in the Monopoly board game:

A little confused by the 1st paragraph.
What if the player never signed a contract?
Suppose Duff just decides to quit Rutgers in October. Could he declare himself a FA and enter the NFL immediately? Dont know what the rules are.

2nd paragraph makes perfect sense.
If you previously signed an NFL contract then you cant enter a future draft.
After getting cut if you go back to college, CFL, Shoprite - doesn't matter. You cant enter the draft again in a couple years.
Want to enter a future draft?
Don't sign a UDFA contract.

I'm generally OK with line being drawn. You go from college to NFL, even as an UDFA, no back to college, even if you get cut. Too harsh?

SEC ineligibility statement refers to players who ‘declared but did not appropriately withdraw’ LOL. ‘Appropriately’ according to who ? To Sarkisian ? To Kiffin ? To Smart ?

Like previous NCAA selective enforcement, it depends on what schools are signing and recruiting the players.

He's light years ahead of the Big Ten commish, unfortunately.

  • Yes, foreign professional basketball players absolutely play in US colleges. [1, 2]
Over the last few years, a massive wave of young international pros—especially from elite European clubs—have moved to America to play in the NCAA. This trend includes top athletes who have already logged minutes against former NBA players in elite leagues like the EuroLeague.
  • Why Foreign Pros Are Rushing to College
    • Massive Financial Paydays: The introduction of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation means top college stars can earn seven-figure salaries. Many teenage European pros only make five-figure salaries back home, making US colleges far more lucrative. [1, 2]

  • The "One-and-Done" Success: Top international players have proven they can use college as a direct springboard to the NBA. For example, international standouts like Egor Demin (BYU via Russia), Khaman Maluach (Duke via South Sudan), and Kasparas Jakucionis (Illinois via Lithuania) all parlayed a single season of college basketball into being selected in the first 20 picks of the 2025 NBA Draft. [1]
  • NCAA Eligibility Loopholes: The NCAA previously strictly banned any athlete who signed a pro contract. However, because youth programs for major European clubs (like FC Barcelona or Maccabi Tel Aviv) rarely pay massive, market-rate salaries to their teenage prospects, the NCAA frequently clears these younger players for collegiate eligibility

The Georgia AG is calling for LSU's expulsion from the SEC if they play former NFL players. It's a circus at this point.

I've long said B1G and SEC will make what will be a pro league that will shake NFL to his tootsies. Someday CFB teams will have pro players but I think they should try to use players they originally recruited. Watching a bunch of players from other teams would reduce the allure. Ohio St with pro tOSU players is more interesting than players from Michigan and LSU. There is a lot of long time tradition that would just be squandered. Maybe limit other teams players with a quota the way Canadian ball limits American players . I know EVERYTHING is about the money now but I think it backfires to squander all native DNA
