90% of iran's oil goes to China...and, according to reports, the Chinese pay a below market rate for this oil. If they have to go on the market and pay normal rates, it would have a significant impact on their economy.

Wouldn't you think that a country the size of China would have crude oil deposits somewhere within their own borders? Perhaps they do, but I have never heard that they produce crude oil, or natural gas, in any significant quantities.

If they did they would be exploiting it. Consider how bad they f*cked up their environment from coal for example. Occam’s Razor suggests they don’t have such deposits.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a reversal of plans to charge a 20% toll on cargo going through the Strait of Hormuz, saying that Middle Eastern countries will instead make investment and trade deals with the U.S.


“Based on highly productive conversations with Middle East leadership, I have decided to replace the 20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment Deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States,” Trump said on social media.


The president said the investments “will be MASSIVE,” though it’s unclear if these would be new commitments relative to what Trump announced after a visit last year to the Middle East.

They're a top 5 producer in % of global output but it's barely half of what the Saudis produce and less than a fourth of US production. They need a whole lot more.

The US would be attacking Iran, militarily, if they had enough munitions.

The US doesn't, so we're begging the world to help with economic sanctions. And needing China and Russia to back that idea is a huge ask.

Merica is so screwed.

you would think so. But the Chinese are a sophisticated people, they must have geological experts and studies of potential deposits. Who knows, maybe they're waiting for the rest of the world to dry up and then they can demand higher prices since they'd be the only game in town

how much of those deposits are actually in philipine waters which china claims while casually ignoring international court verdicts ?
