These days you need to literally try to kill someone or the equivalent in crime in order to see jail time: Jails are so badly overcrowded all across all 50 states, especially in huge states like Texas, California and New York.

Not! Jails are closing everywhere, rapidly. It's a major problem in upstate NY where it may be the only source of income. Try facts next time you want to try reporting news breathlessly.

...it was recently reported illegal aliens ATTENDING state prison in Oklahoma cost $34,000 per day...if these people were sent home, maybe they could quickly make available necessary room for other travelers to known, deserved legal attendance......?.......best to all.............rs

Can someone explain why overcrowding would drive the closure of prisons? Seems backwards.

It may be cheaper to put criminals back on the streets, but some things are worth paying for.

If "alternative solutions" was the right thing to do they would have done that before worrying about the overcrowding. "Hop[ing] to reduce its prison population in a more sustainable and humane manner" means putting criminals back in the streets and "hoping" it turns out well. Make it make sense.

I’m not saying I’m for or against. But the article explains that prison overcrowding and bad things that happen because of it, along with other things such as costs and a different philosophy about how to spend that money has led to the closures.

I don’t care about anyone’s politics. I’m just saying that the OP was blown off and he was actually right.

If you are nobody important and can't afford a competent lawyer and you get caught with a couple hundred dollars of pot and more than 5 bucks in your pocket you are getting jail time.

However, once you are on probation you are effectively under our legal system's thumb and they are just waiting to catch you doing something terribly stupid.
I find it difficult to believe AJ can live his life for 3 whole years not getting caught doing something stupid. He will get caught driving 100 mph in a school zone, or sitting in a bar, or putting his hands on a woman. It isn't his fault, he deserves a second chance X 20, I won't get caught, in his head everything is justified. Doing stupid things is in his DNA.

I’m with Ski. I read the article and couldn’t understand the logic. I asked my buddy ChatGPT to analyze it, and it said,

“So when the article says:

“Overcrowding has been a persistent issue… [so] the state has been forced to find alternative solutions to reduce the prison population.”

and then presents closing prisons as one of those solutions, it doesn’t make logical sense.“

Chat also says Prison Direct states Attica and Green Haven are closed, when they are both still operating. Also, “I would not regard The Prison Direct article as a reliable source.”

In the end, it’s not important enough to get upset at each other about. I’m optimistic that Nebraska convicts AJ and deals with him more harshly since he has now been convicted in Texas of essentially the same crime.

Literally the article did not explain it. It had a byline on Overcrowding, but never explained the exact question that the above person raised. It was a word salad that said there was Overcrowding. Ok, but why as in A leads to B leads to C

Not sure how it works locally in PA, but on the federal level pot has quickly become the equivalent of Bud heavies. Coke is the new pot and it is quickly becoming a wrist-slapper.
