This might portend the end of my following college football...

Technically yes, but just a preseason game (and not a whole one at that) , and had only signed a preseason contract.
I believe this ruling currently applies to 16 players.

They still played professional football and were paid to do it. I can sort of see the truly undrafted players who never played a down of any kind for an NFL team having another year of eligibility. Guys that get paid to play NFL football should not be allowed to return to college football.

I wonder how the "academics" are going to work? Can they reenroll at a school as a freshman? What will the acceptance requirements be?

This is what many of us on here (maybe you as well) have predicted for a while now: that players who were drafted (or undrafted) but only ever made the practice squad or similar would get to return to college ball.

Yes, this player only played in a preseason game, and briefly at that, but he played in an NFL game.

This simply cracks the door for the future.

I don't know about Freshman, maybe they can give them an internship at a driving range.

They are no longer even pretending college football is an amateur sport.

I can't say that I have or will stop following college football. But, I'm clearly past the point of caring how things flow. To me, that's sad. I post on this site because I genuinely like everyone on this site and consider people here as "friends", if that's possible "on-line". I don't agree with everyone here on everything sports-wise, Gamecock-wise, political-wise, etc. But so what? I don't agree with family members on everything. As Spurrier would say, "It is what it is".
