Has anyone been watching the American Legion World Series?

The Carpet Land Rugs from Lincoln East are in the semi-finals tonight against a team from Michigan.

Game time is 6:00 CDT on ESPNU.

I've been watching for a few days and am really unimpressed with the quality of pitching. When you're down to the final eight teams in the country, you'd think there would be a bunch of 90 mph fireballers. Instead, most fastballs are in the upper 70s and low 80s.

We'll see what happens tonight.

Legion ball isn’t what it used to be, especon the National scale.

Between arm injuries and protecting hard throwers from arm injuries I think legion is just going to be a bunch of kids trying to improve value or having an experience by playing in the games. Stats do not matter at all any more, just measurables and playing more games and increasing wear and tear doesn't help measurables. If you show up to a show case and throw 94-98, have high exit velo on swing, good jump off the bat you are getting signed whether you played ball or not. Just imagine being a kid with good movement, pinpoint control, you are a gamer who performs at a high level every time out, and you throw 88...you have no chance.

Supposedly the scoreboard in Shelby, NC is +4mph higher than the ESPN TV radar. So, the TV said that the Lincoln East arm last night topped at 89mph. But, inside the stadium it said 93mph. That's pretty good velo for a SR to be in High School. D1 commit to Omaha.

After a long rain delay, the Rugs finished a 10-0 win over Michigan.

Final game tomorrow at 5:00 CDT against Portland, OR.
How does a national championship involve teams from poor weather locations? There has to be better teams in the southeast, texas, or southern California. This can't be the real thing.

It's a great accomplishment, some people have to try to diminish everything. Lanik has his critics, but I'll say this - he makes his guys buy into the team concept. It's cool seeing top HS players in the state playing legion ball instead of telling their teammates to lick balls while they hit the showcase circuit.

100%. Nebraska has tons of Legion teams, and a lot of them have guys that don’t have the option to play high school in the Spring. The showcase BS can wait, imo. If you have the goods to play in college, paying to travel and showcase isn’t gonna do more than playing games all Summer, imo.

It’s just like the LLWS coming up. The best 12 year olds in America aren’t playing in Williamsport the best are playing in select tournaments in the summer. Same here the best aren’t playing in this tournament they are playing in Select. Still doesn’t take anything away from the kids from Lincoln East . Congratulations and well done .

I was surprised when the announcers said Nebraska had the 2nd most legion teams in the nation.

Honestly I thought they were screwed when the pitching fell apart throwing balls but man did they never quit and stormed back.

Congratulations rugs!

Hopefully more kids (parents) realize the showcase stuff is stupid after this success.
They won't. Man, baseball just wouldn't be the same if you couldn't see all the summer instagram posts about how Jimmy hit 93 on the gun at the South Mid Summer Smasharama Showcase, and then he shows up for HS ball in the spring and he walks 7 in 3 innings while rubbing his elbow with his Dad yelling at him from behind the backstop.

Pitchers are fighting against the clock and every pitch is a tick towards tommy john. The sport is max effort, it isn't about repetition anymore, it isn't about experience, it is how hard you can throw and how hard you can hit and how fast you can run along with elite hand eye coordination and eyesight. It is an easy sport if you have those natural skills and impossible for people who don't.

Lincoln east didn’t even win the Nebraska state HS championship in the spring . But they are the best 17-18 year old team in the United States? Kudos and congrats to the kids for winning this tournament but let’s be realistic.
