I honestly don’t remember. I never knew of a time when I didn’t know how to swim. I would guess it was at the KCs with my parents

My old man thru me in the college pool at State. Was located a little north of the snowflake Whole Foods restaurant. Had high and low diving boards that would launch your *** into the stratosphere

I took lessons two summers in a row when I was very young. They didn't take.

When I was in the 3rd grade, the only way I could play with my friends at the Y was to swim with them in the deep end. So I started swimming. I guess I remembered a little of those lessons.

Same. I can't remember not swimming. Now I'm trying to teach my 2 year old granddaughter how to swim. She scares me because she loves the pool and just jumps in whether you are ready or not.

I was on a swim team as a kid, but I don’t specifically remember learning to swim.

My dad always said the first time he put me in a pool I swam away from him like a frog and it stuck. Was a natural breast stroker from the start.

I jumped in on my own one day in the local community pool. Although i knew how to swim, I pretended I couldn’t and began to struggle. That’s when it happened…Wendy Peffercorn, the smoke-show of a life guard, jumped in and saved me.
in an attempt to save my life, she pressed her lips to mine to revive my lifeless body.
From that moment on we were inseparable

now we swim together in the pool in our backyard

How I didn’t learn was at a friends pool party when I was about 5 just jumping in the deep end. After they jumped in & dragged me out mom decided it might be a good idea to get me some swimming lessons.

Hot take: Anyone who says they learned to swim by being thrown in the water by dad/grandpa/uncle/brother is lying.
Older neighbor boys threw me out of a John boat in the cow watering pond, probably wasn’t swimming but I dog paddled back to the bank. After I told Mom she took me for lessons at the city pool because she didn’t have time for a funeral that summer.

Kind of self-taught/coached up at Boy Scout Camp, swimming in a murky lake. I was pretty fat as a kid so floating came easily. If you can float, you can figure out how to do all the rest.

Swimming lessons as a six-year old at the local pool from a red-headed girl named Violet - who looked like a full grown adult, but was likely around 18.

That was about 1970 and I can still stay up. Thank you, Violet.

I've always thought knowing how to swim is one of the more important life skills that there are and about the best gift you can give your (or any) child.

Did LOTS of lessons growing up primarily because you earned "patches" for increasing your skills that my mother would sew on my swim suit. Both the YMCA and Red Cross had them. I remember my "minnow" and "flying fish" patches from the Y and can't remember the names but RC had them too.

No lessons... just went swimming until I knew how. Often times It would be some place like Davis Lake, Sleepy Hollow or any pool or creak deemed worthy with or without supervision at a very young age.

We got a swimming pool when I was 16. My parents got my younger brother and sister swimming lessons, but I didn't want to take them. I watched and learned from what they were being taught. When the pool was being filled, I jumped off the diving board and swam. It wasn't pretty, but I learned from there. My daughters both had swimming lessons and could both swim/float before they could walk. Neither of them remembers not knowing how to swim and were both on their HS swim team. Oddly enough, even though my parents had a pool installed, neither of them ever learned to swim.

There was a movie with John Wayne throwing a kid in that claimed he couldn't swim that did get a lot of play. Men worshipped them some John Wayne.

I have seen it done to kids and they would come up and they did tread water enough to make it to the edge of pool as they would not be thrown way out there. Some needed a little help to make it but usually just a pole or hand out was enough. I can't say they learned to swim but they did learn how to not die and it was the beginning of them learning to swim.

Hell, My Uncle would do it to every kid near the pool whether they were his or not and whether they could swim or not. He never killed a kid, but dang there were times I thought I was drowning and I knew how to swim but he would hold you down if you fought him and I did fight... well I struggled.

What a weird hill to die on. You got me. I was just making it up to earn internet cred with strangers I’ll never meet. I actually learned to swim by skinny dipping with your wife.
