I know one kids day scrimmage doesn’t show all but seems like most outlets are saying he’s won this battle with Brown? I hope Heck is the man as he offers way more mobility and his arm is just as strong … time will tell but looks like we have our guy at the helm.

I want whomever Tim Lester wants. And I assume it will be the guy that can run the offense to the fullest, move the chains and make some big plays. And, of course, score some points.

I would like to have a mobile QB too, everything else being equal. But there's more to it than just that.

But, Heck looked pretty sharp in the video highlights!

Gronowski is gone but one thing he clearly showed (as if it wasn’t already obvious) is that QB mobility is a very valuable asset and weapon.

Set aside the designed QB run plays because MG was unique, what is most valuable is the ability to escape pocket pressure in order to extend a play - the 3-4 times per game you have a broken play and the QB is able to scramble and find an open receiver or run for a 1st down. Drive extended. Hecklinski seems to have that.

Hecklinski is clearly the better athlete and the better QB. Coaches will stick with the coach speak as long as possible, but Hecklinski is the No. 1 QB. And I predict that Brown will, sooner or later, transfer again. Sullivan will become the backup, and Bessinger will be No. 3 and will press Sullivan for the backup role later in the season. Fitzgerald remains as a serviceable No. 4 who may transfer when the season is over.

That's how I see it anyway. And in any event, Iowa does seem to have significant talent in the QB room, finally. I'm bullish on this offense with a QB ready to blossom, multiple great TEs, multiple excellent RBs, WRs ready to break out, and a young but talented O-line. Iowa will have an offense that can win by outscoring opponents. No need to ride the defense and the punting game anymore.

Each game we’ve lost over the years has been to teams whose QB extended plays and broke us down accordingly. Yes, we need that dynamic to do the same !

One scrimmage does not signal who will start. Still three weeks of practice but Heck didn't hurt himself. He's more accurate, has a quicker release, is more mobile and can make all the throws from different angles.

Not as concerned about starting a new QB this year. If the OL is solid and running game productive, the passing game should be solid. Best TE and receiver room in a long time.

I trust Tim and Kirk to put the best QB on the field.

I certainly don't trust Kirk to put the best QB on the field, From Stanzi, Beathard, and Cade. I am sure that Heck is more of a risk taker at practice, and probably turns the ball over more, but I cannot imagine yesterday was an insane outlier. Also, when people talk about athletic ability, Hank Brown is mobile and quick, his problem is indecisiveness, he had a great run on Saturday.

With regards to not being concerned about the QB this year, I don't know how anyone can say that. The OL looks good, RB looks good, but for the first time in a long time, I'm not sure about the DL. Hopefully with the 3 game warm up prior to Michigan, they can figure it out.

We also have a different OC who knows a thing or two about QB play and I really think Kirk is going to let Lester take the reigns this year.

JFC...the staff hasn't got this figured out yet???

They should after Saturday, if they havent already. Heck gets the ball out faster, has a quicker release and is accurate. There's also something to be said who performs when the lights are on and there's fans in the stands, wasnt even close between the 2 guys.

You don't think O'keefe knew a thing or two about QB play? I do agree that with injuries piling up in the last few years, it doesn't benefit them to truly name one at this point, as the likelihood of seeing either during the season is high.

Stanzi directed the Hawks to some great seasons as did Beathard. McNamara was a bust. Not sure what the D-line has to do with QB play. A strong OL and solid running attack should give our QB tiime to develop early in the season. It will keep defenses from blitzes and should allow for more one-on-one coverages.

The Iowa defensive line is what they are seeing in practice, looking good on the field, is either a great sign that the offense will be damn good, or an indictment of the defensive line needing to develop.

Apparently from folks in the know who have had the opportunity to view camp practices......Heck started camp pretty rough. First 3 or 4 practices were not good. However, he really started ascending in the week leading up to the Kids Day practice and had by far his best day on Saturday. Brown, on the other hand, has been pretty steady throughout camp, but then had his worst day by far on Saturday.

What does all that mean? Who knows. Maybe Heck is just a gamer who needs the lights on to perform and Brown doesn't perform well when the lights come on.

What we do have are 2 viewings of Brown inside Kinnick (Indiana last year and Kids Day) and neither one has been good at all. Some guys are just really good, steady practice guys but have a case of the "yips" or "stage fright" when it means something. Certainly seems like that's the case with Brown up to this point.

Even if Heck is the guy at this point, he's still young and young guys typically need to be pushed in competition to continue to get better. Hopefully Brown learns from Saturday and keeps competing well. That will only bode well for the team as the season approaches.

See bolded text above. Do we know that for certain? On Saturday, he passed the ball much better than Brown. But I don't know that we have any specific evidence that Hecklinski can evade a rush/pick up a few yards with his feet, other than the fact that he is 5-10, and there is a natural assumption that smaller QBs will be better runners. For what it's worth, I've heard that Brown has better straight-ahead speed, and someone said he (Brown) had a nice run on Saturday.

From the evidence we do have, it seems like Hecklinski is the better option at QB, and I'm not arguing otherwise. I'm just saying that I think we need to see more evidence before we can conclude that Heck can make things happen with his feet.

Yeah, will need to see proof of mobility in an Iowa uniform on game day, I agree.

Im trying to stay positive with this before getting too worried until see DL play. Keep thinking about to 15’ kids day where our OL didn’t play well and lot of concern with that group after they were dominated. Came to be our DL (with a then healthy Ott) was a super talented unit and our OL wasn’t as bad as they seemed to be. With 2 all conf players with potential to be AA on our OL hoping this is the case.

Brown would be best to stick it out here, unless he had a more or less guaranteed starting opportunity elsewhere. He'll have two less years to learn a new system if he transfers, and possibly compete again for a starting spot only to have the possibility of being the backup there too. At least here, he's guaranteed next man in already.

Yeah, it is more than a fair assessment, it isn't like our DEs will be lining up against a Trevor Lauck every game. Merriweather and Olagbaju were both out as well. The pass rush is one concern I do have, and I think it's been missing a bit more the last few years.

I remember that Kids Day distinctly. I think CJ was "sacked" like 10 times that day....half of them were from Ott.

KF stays after to answer questions like he always does, and he basically said this of his OL, "We played terrible. Our 1's are playing like 2's and our 2's are playing like 3's. We've got 2 weeks to get that fixed." Lo and behold, they go undefeated.

You just never know based on a single practice.

My guess is Brown starts the season. As long as he doesn’t screw the pooch, Brown will the guy. Heckli performing well in kids day and practice will hopefully give Brown a shorter leash in case he is bad and loses games by being ineffective.

I am genuinely curious how KF handles this seemingly tight quarterback race with Tim as the OC and how it might unfold early in the season, if Brown is ineffective. Will KF stick to his guns causing angst in the fanbase? Does or will Tim have the authority to make a switch earlier than KF would like?

Didn’t know about 2 being out. Merriweather one DE with experience. Like you concern I have as well. But I wonder how much pressure besides front 4 PP brought on Saturday without seeing scrimmage. Parker we know prefers not too but will bring extra guy when we weren’t generating enough. Like Rutgers 1st half lighting us up and got more aggressive 2nd half. Same thing with MN in 24’ come out 2nd half kept blitzing 5th guy with Nick Jackson and MN offense bogged down.

I don't disagree, but you almost never see quarterbacks complete their eligibility at a school as a backup.

Looking back at Iowa's rosters over the years, the last non-starting senior QB we had on the roster was someone named Ryan Schmidt in 2019. I'm pretty sure he was a walk-on, and the only recorded stats in his career came on a couple of kickoffs. Before Schmidt, you had Tyler Wiegers, who was listed as a senior in 2017, but he still had eligibility remaining, and he transferred to Eastern Michigan for the 2018 season. Then you have to go back to 2012 for senior QB John Wienke, but he at least got some playing time at punter that season. To find the last Iowa QB who finished his career holding a clipboard on the sideline, you have to go all the way back to Jason Manson, whose last season was 2006, a full 20 years ago.

For what it's worth, Brown surprised me with just how fast he can scoot. His long stride makes him deceptively fast.

But Heck's accuracy can't be denied. Made smart decisions when things weren't going well and looked calm and in control in the pocket.

If Brown comes back in '27 to be QB2 for the 3rd straight year, that would almost certainly be the only case of someone doing that in college football in the portal era.

Brown (or Hecklinski, if he ends up QB2, or both for that matter) will be gone after this season. Hopefully JSully and Bess will still be here. That's the way it is now.

Manson was the starting QB for "The Stand" so he didn't necessarily just hold a clipboard. (Granted he played in 3 game total that season)

Nooooo we’re trying to get out of this multi-multi season passing game SLUMP.

Positive vibes with all fingers crossed Tim Lester can get us to a fairly respectable air-attack this season!
