Hoyt Wilhelm batted .088 lifetime with ~500 plate appearances and had one home run, which he hit on his very first at-bat.
Adam Wainwright was considered a pretty good hitting pitcher for the Cardinals and also hit a HR in his first MLB at-bat. The Cardinals have had 11 players who hit HR's their first MLB at-bat; three of them were pitchers!

Baez is an eastern MA kid ... we've had a bunch of talent come out of this general area lately. Crazy thing was, he was drafted in the 2nd round because his power tool was considered the best of any prep prospect in that draft ... but he also threw mid-upper 90's as a pitcher, and clubs were looking at him for that, as well. He's had a bit of a slow development in the minors - had trouble making contact for a few years - but got back on track last year, so we'll see if this is for real. Would have been fun to see him go the Shohei route, though ...

He would not have hit 3 HRs vs. Bob Gibson or Don Drysdale. A little chin music after his first HR, then some rib indentation after the second. Would have struck out after that.
Bob Gibson once plunked someone for saying hi to him in the hotel elevator. True story, you should read “October 1964.”

If I was choosing a team, Gibson would be my starting pitcher.

Gibson would be my righty. Sandy Koufax would be my lefty. And my golf partner.

Sandy Koufax was a great basketball player in high school, I have read. Strange because Koufax was a pretty piss-poor hitter in the majors. Gibson, he played varsity basketball at Creighton. Jesuit trained, the toughness is a feature and not a bug.
