A few weekends ago a buddy and I were drinking by the campfire, listening to my PC's "kitchen sink" song file of about a thousand songs. And a KISS song came on, I think it was "Duece".

He was surprised, albeit happily, that I I had a KISS song in the file. And given he likes to tell old stories about concerts and bands from our youth, the discussion wandered to whether they were a good band or not.

I didn't have a straight forward answer for him - so I answered him with this statement.

I told him "I believe I have 4 KISS songs in this file. I have exactly zero Bon Jovi songs in this file".

That sums your question up for me. They aren't the most overrated hard rock band ever. Not when there's lumps of crap like Bon Jovi to kick around.

And don't get me started about Sammy Hagar...

Eff KISS but you have terrible taste in music. Guessing you don't like Nickleback, either 😂?

Just an fyi, I don't love KISS. They're not one of my at least 50 favorite bands. I think the only CD's of theirs I own are Alive and Destroyer (the only two to own imho) and I got them cheap in a used CD store in the 2000's. I do own Double Platinum too (greatest hits) in an LP I believe.

If I had to list my top 10 favorite bands, they are (in no particular order)...

Led Zeppelin
Rolling Stones
DLR era Van Halen (easily #1)
Bon Scott era ACDC
Jimi Hendrix
Def Leppard (say, High n Dry thru Hysteria)
Stone Temple Pilots
Pink Floyd
Big Wreck (Canadian band nobody here probably ever heard of)
Alice in Chains

However, I grew up in KISS' era - it was hard to miss them if you grew up in the 1970's like I did. There's other 1970's acts like Steely Dan, Queen, Allman Brothers, Eagles, Steve Miller, Elton John, Van Morrison, Three Dog Night, Creedence Clearwater Revival, etc - I don't own a single album of all those but I do own greatest hits CD's from all of them.

It was hard to miss them too in the 1970's. You hear the bands you grew up with your entire life, it isn't difficult to hear their entire output - and chances are you eventually find songs you like.

If I had to list 10 - and yes I’m old and white - mine they would be:

U2
Bob marley
Blink 182
Bob dylan
The beatles
The Rolling Stones
Eric clapton
The Freddy jones band
Billy joel
Cold play

I'm going to catch strays for this ... But It's the Rolling Stones. They're meh at best.
My first reaction was to tell you to shut yer mouth, but in hindsight, After Tattoo You, yeah, they pretty much cashed it in. The late Brian Jones/Mick Taylor years they are second to none.

Kiss is ok. Probably a bit overrated, but music is all personal taste anyway.

I read some comments from Mick Taylor on joining the Rolling Stones, He said he was amazed when he joined that they basically had no concept on how to practice and rehearse. The band was in peak form after he joined. They really screwed him over on songwriting credits, He helped create some great riffs that Keith got all the credit for. Both Mick Jagger and Keith have stated that on looking back they didn’t give him the credit he deserved.

100% agree OP If not the most, definitely top 5. Sorry @bagdropper Bon Jovi > KISS. Just because you have a ****** song file, it’s not Bon Jovi's fault. :) Thats a you thing. Not a large margin, but they are better. Hell, I'd even say Scorpions > KISS.
Wait a minute. Scorpions are one of the most successful hard rock bands the last five decades.

Scorpions rock.

Most candidates for the MOST highly overrated rock band ever would have to be very highly regarded in the first place. I don't think KISS is thought of as one of the best bands of all time - they were a fun arena-rock band with a gimmick.

My most overrated rock band ever is Led Zeppelin ... I'll occasionally hear one of their classics and think it's pretty good (for a bit, then I'm over it), but I have never WANTED to listen to Led Zeppelin. It's just too ... much. Trying too hard. If I have to picture someone who takes Led Zeppelin very seriously, they'd be creepy weirdos.

I saw Scorpions in 1977ish. They opened for Ted Nugent and Blackfoot and on the billing were listed as "special Guest". They were the best band that night just squeaking by Ted.

Kiss- we had a dude on our football team who was a huge KISS fan. They were playing the night of a game so this dude called in sick to school missing the game. Coaches booted him off the team. CSB!
