I know I might be kicking a hornet's nest but I'm going to ask this anyway. It is not intended to judge anyone's lifestyle or imply that every woman in sports is homosexual. A story I read about women's cricket in Australia triggered this thought and I am just curious on what others think. My observation is that there seems to be way more same sex relationships in the upper levels of women's sports relative to the general population. My questions are::

Is this observation valid or just a misperception. If valid, do you think pro sports tend to bring out this tendency based on peer influence or do lesbians just tend to be more into athletics than straight women?

Another thing that came to mind on this was Victoria Viviens who by all accounts dated men in college but married a woman after she got in the WNBA.

Thoughts?

My first thought is why would anybody write a story about women's cricket in Australia, and 2nd thought is why would anybody read it?

And, I haven't even gotten to the lesbian part of your question yet for pondering the first two thoughts I had about it...............

Since you've brought us to the third rail and pointed right at it, I might as well touch it while I'm here.

Biologically (and IN GENERAL) men are stronger, have better natural hand-eye coordination, have bigger muscles (therefor are faster, jump higher, kick harder, etc.) than women. Not all men. Not all women. Please read that caveat again before reading the rest of this:

The average homosexual woman has more masculine qualities (again, IN GENERAL) than the average woman. Maybe they were blessed with a touch more testosterone or whatever, I don't know the root cause, just stating a general fact. It seems to me that this might cause them to be better at sports than other girls when they're growing up, which then leads to them being more likely to stay in sports. So if you have a young girl who is a tomboy playing rec soccer, she will dominate that league and have fun doing it. If she progresses, she'll naturally grow up playing (and being good at) soccer, through high school and then maybe college and pro. That woman is way more likely to advance into upper ranks of soccer than say, my daughter who is a little princess, slow (because she runs like a girl), afraid of contact, etc. I know, I happen to have both types of daughters.

No judgement here, just trying to give my answer to your question. It seems obvious to me that's why the WNBA, womens MLS and other leagues would be loaded with homosexual women. These are the girls who on average were better at sports growing up. Someone like Sophie Cunningham is the outlier (apparently) being hetero, but she's definitely got some more masculine qualities about her too when you see her throw fists with some of those other ladies.

I think this has decreased in past decades, and probably more rapidly in recent years, but my best guess would be that most girls were/are steered by family and society into more feminine pursuits: gymnastics, dance, etc versus more masculine sports like baseball/softball, basketball, etc. Even today, I'm guessing the sexuality of gymnastics/dance participants is much closer to the nation as a whole than softball/basketball.
I'd also guess that those sports that have historically had more lesbians playing may seem like a better way to spend your time?
Another way of thinking about this is why are so many gay men in the upper levels of theater, ballet, and fashion?

I'd guess that there may be a slightly larger group of gay women in sports, but it's also just as likely that this is your only exposure to gay women in a larger context. Not a criticism, just saying that they're on sports teams that you're aware of, so you see them there.

ETA- I didn't know you couldn't say "qu**r" on this board, but that's the preferred descriptor other than gay. I have a qu**r child and so I know several qu**r teenagers, including girls. I'd say as many of them are involved in athletics/band as are not.

Yep - I'd guess the numbers aren't more than a standard deviation or two higher than the population at large in the overwhelming majority of instances.

My wife and had this discussion recently related to the frequency in high school girls sports. She works with a few women that have daughters that came out as Les in high school. The one thing that stood out to us was that all of them were consumed with their sport (most softball). From early elementary through high school, they were constantly with groups of only girls. Every day practicing with them, every weekend on travel ball trips with them, etc etc. All of their social time, discovery time, recreation time, all of their time is with all girl groups. Seems like for a lot of them, that social closeness gets confusing.

The same thing happens on high-level male sports teams. Some of you probably watched "Heated Rivalry" recently.

ChatGPT told me there are slightly more gay women in sports than their representation in the general population. But we're still talking single digit percentages so if you notice it's probably simply you noticing things that are different than what you are generally accustomed to.

As far as why is there a small uptick in sports populations, women's sports adhere less to what looks like what it is to be traditionally feminine - especially basketball and softball. Although this seems to be changing over time and clearly doesn't apply in some sports like volleyball and tennis. Obviously there are traditionally feminine women who are gay and there are butch looking straight women but you get the point.

Being part of a welcoming group is part of it too. Who you are attracted to is less important than if can you compete and be a good teammate.

It’s the same reason that there are a ton of gay men in theater and on Broadway. Sports are more of a masculine pursuit, therefore drawing more “masculine” women. Theater is more of a feminine pursuit, therefore drawing more effeminate men. This is, of course, a broad generalization, so don’t come at me with specific stats.

I initially thought this question was going to be about why there are so many gay women in high level positions like women's team owners, coaches, and the front office.

That would be interesting to ponder.

But why are so many high level women athletes gay?
Meh. Not as interesting. Is the aim even accurate?...I don't know.
- Maybe it's environmental and they have a general talent advantage to get ahead in the sport.
- Maybe it's cultural and they felt like they fit in more in competitive team sports vs individual sports like track, golf, etc.

I know you are mad at God and hate all things Christian for whatever reason, but since you brought it up, if you think that's bad you should look into the numbers of closeted boy-17ers in ISIS, Hamas and any muslim miltant group. Way higher percentage than in any Church heierarchy. It might even make you mad and disgusted enough to use them in your next example.

I don’t thinks it’s that most of them are lesbians so much as the ones that are are just very visible & open about it. I do think it’s probably significantly higher than the general population of women though. Maybe 10-15%.

Exactly, I work with a lady that played softball at Arkansas State. She told me there were only 2 straight females on the team.

"There may be a ton of child sexual abuse by leaders in this religion, but there are even more child sex abusers in some evil military groups halfway across the world!"

That's a hell of a post to make.
You attempted to excuse away or reduce the atrocity of child sex abuse in what is supposed to be a loving religion...by pointing out how evil military groups are worse.

It may just seem like a higher percentage because.... Sports are an area where gay women can be themselves, so they are out; but it's an area where gay men can/have to hide themselves, so they are not out.

or...

There is a much higher percentage because... Sports are an area where gay women can be themselves, so more play; but it's an area where gay men can/have to hide themselves, so less play

True, but let's be clear. Evil religious-based military groups. Him pointing this out makes LOTR point even more clear.

If you are a young and athletic female who is looking to gnaw on some carpet, are you going to spend your time perusing the goth chicks in art class or are you going straight for the girls locker room?

It's definately higher in upper level sports, probably for some of the reasons listed in the other comments. Agree that the comparison of men in theatre/ballet is similar.

I did see an article a few weeks back that said for the WNBA All-Star game, 45% were publically out and I would expect a few to not be public. These days I tend to be more suprised when an upper level basketball, software or soccer player is heterosexual.

There can be a bit of peer pressure there as well. I know a girl that had a college basketball scholarship, but she only lasted one year because she was the only straight player on the team and the other girls gave her constant grief about it. I'm sure that works in reverse as well though. Like anything else, many people tend to confirm to what you are around the most.
