Why Did Rutgers Have to Rutgers?

No idea about that but diversity stops being diversity when its not representative of America.
Should a state university be a representative of America or the state? There are a lot of Asians in NJ.
I know we all agree that we should not select students using DEI and base it on qualifications. My guess is those Asian students out perform others.

Just had lunch with a guy who told me his nephew just completed a successful internship in investment banking at a prestigious boutique bank in Manhattan. They gave him a full time offer after he graduates next May. Worked his tail off and beat out kids from big name private schools and impressed his bosses. Word on the street is that RU makes you grow up early and tests you. Nothing is easy. Not for everyone for sure.
Agreed Rutgers grads represent well on the street. They come in with a chip on their shoulder and are not afraid of work. There were many IVY’s and Privates that didn’t represent as well. Cornell, Dartmouth, Amherst, BU seemed to lack when it came to being ablle to think independently They know theory not application. They needed to be spoon fed. Patriot schools Lafayette Colgate, and some southern state schools prepared well UVA. LSU, ole miss (don’t laugh).
Ru as a school is sink or swim. There’s no need to make navigating the system intentionally difficult. Academics are tough enough. The bureaucracy needs to change.

Sure they do. Hate to say it, but Penn State is viewed as more prestigious in affluent circles in NJ, like Princeton. They have a much stronger brand, helped by their 109K stadium. In real life, it’s probably the same. They get the same jobs we do.

Race may have something to do with it. PSU is 58% White whereas Rutgers is 29% White.
Not in Summit.

Sadly I think this part of the reason the upper middle class in NJ sends to PSU in such high volume over Rutgers.

Living in Marlton for awhile, the amount of kids & adults I saw in PSU gear made me sick.

I saw way too much PSU in the Marlton / Medford / Mt. Laurel area which is mostly white and more affluent compared to most other portions of South Jersey.
I can speak for western Hunterdon County, very similar to what you describe with a lot of PSU gear. I can tell you that 90% of them are Kohl’s fans, none of them actually went to Penn state. Unfortunately they are college football fans and Rutgers never gave them a reason to be local fans, but still lame

Love the wokeness here.

remember when they used the Asians to get rid of affirmative action? Now there are too many Asians and we need the student body to reflect more like America. Can’t make this up. LOL
We are seeing the real biases people have. I've seen highly successful and highly unsuccessful people at hundreds of companies over decades. Success or lack of success more often than not is colorblind, doesn't care where you got educated, what sex or orientation you were, or what your religious upbringing was. What mattered most was how relationships and connections between people. That often showed that those with means had more opportunities than those without to start

It's like Rosanna Rosanna Danna used to say on the old SNL. . . .

Newsflash for those who don't know--medical school, engineering, computer science and physical sciences have a large percentage of Asian students. Apparently white kids are too cool, too stupid, too lazy or something else stops them from pursuing these academic areas. Do some of these people avoiding people different from them live under rocks?

This entire post is filled with signs of bigotry, misinformation ,gross generalizations and just plain ignorance. For example, guess what ,I know plenty of kids from Ridgewood NJ and other Bergen County towns that went to RU , are there now or transferd into RU from their previous choice.Yes,people make reasonable decisions where to go for multiple different reasons, that's ok- --no need to attack RU for their choices. NO school is perfect and by the way many kids can't get into RU and do this blame game.

They would tell you the state U of NJ should not look like NJ but rather "America", ignore particularly the demographic of high school seniors both statewide and nationally, and then forget that Texas and UF also look like their states not "America."

It will be interesting to see who wins that battle in the long run

The kids who go to University of Tampa cause it looked great on TikTok

The kids who go to trade school because they saw it on Joe Rogan

Or the Asian American kids who happily went to RU and got degrees in Engineering or went on to med school

Big mystery that, I am sure it will be a close call!

Though probably Brad and Chad at Tampa will inherit the dad's business

59% of NJ is White. Someone above claimed Rutgers is 29% White. If true, it’s not even close. 10% is Asian.

I’m a big merit guy. If those American Asians are getting in on merit, no problem. It’s the ship ins that are a problem. We know Rutgers has been social engineering other races at Rutgers for a long time.

I agree on merit as well but let’s not act like this stuff doesn’t happen elsewhere.

There’s no way you can tell me all those Lax bros are getting into their Finance roles based on merit haha.

Some kids want to get away for school
Others want warm weather, big Greek life presence or big-time football

All I'll say is if you to 20-30 big time football stadiums around the country and see the pageantry, spirit, enthusiasm, etc. of the fans and students that literally engulfs the entire community on a Saturday, it's hard to say no to that

If you mean Rutgers guys, yea they are. Team GPA on MLAX is one of the highest in the department, as is the amount of Deans List and Academic All Big Ten. More than half the team made that last semester. The kids that go through the program are earning their masters degrees, entry in law and med schools, and yes, Wall St.

One thing to point out, remember, it’s not about overall demographics of the state. It’s essentially the demographics of school age kids that should be the comparison. This can be way different than the overall/adult population.

And yes, merit is merit. Let the results fall where they may!

One overlooked factor driving the make up of the Rutgers student demographics is community college transfers.

Rutgers does not publish statistics on this but UCLA - the top ranked public school in the B1G - provides details on applicants from community colleges.

Last year, UCLA admitted nearly 6,000 students from more than 100 California community colleges. Here is the list. The numbers at Rutgers are different but the trend is likely the same.

This is not just a lefty state thing. About 20% of freshman at the US Naval Academy enter from the Naval Academy Prep School, a type of junior college for the USNA. I grew up playing ball with the NAPS guys every summer. Very diverse group.

NAPS and West Point Prep Maps is where they send most of their athletes. It’s a redshirt without calling it a redshirt.

That explains why I got my *** kicked in the NAPS gym. This was pre 9/11 and my friend and I would use his dad's old military ID to get on the base and the gym had no AC so doors were always left open to get some fresh air inside.

Nope. They are like PGing at a prep school. In fact, at least Navy will also tell kids to PG at an actual prep school.

Rutgers is attracting and loading up on high academic families that see this as a cheap value degree and nothing more. Honda Civic families and first generation college kids.

Those demographics don't wind up giving or staying connected to the school. The high achievers with money we are not landing. Those kids go to Ivy, Michigan, or lately Clemson, Penn State, Auburn etc.

The upper middle class or upper class kids who live in a 5-20M dollar sorority house and have a great college experience rave about it and stay connected, show up to games, give etc.

This is not a hard concept to grasp yet at Rutgers it's like trying to split the atom with some of you.

You can get the money from them now, or later. You can't get both.

And graduated with no debt and had a bunch of cash for a top tier graduate school.

Rutgers is what it is, an affordable, no frills, high quality education. And it’s gotten incredibly competitive for in-state kids these days. Other schools are rolling out the red carpet for out of state kids.

ifs always been like that. Im more than 2 decades removed, even if I wasn’t poor then, why would I spend an extra 150k to get the same degree from a school that’s 20 spots higher in the US news ranking?

Sounds exactly like a redshirt without calling it a redshirt. Pretty much verbatim what MAPS coach told us to explain it.

Not really. At least historically, a prep school PG year had zero impact on the number of years you could play college ball. Different than a red shirt. If the rules have changed so be it

Service academies don’t offer redshirts! It’s 4 years of academics and athletics. So like I said a redshirt without calling it a redshirt.

You can get it from them now and later. If the football team goes 12-0 and makes it to the B1G championship game and the college football playoffs all of a sudden the donations will sky rocket and the interest in the school will increase from current and former students. Just look at Indiana. 500% increase once they started winning. Or look at Saint Peter’s when the basketball team made the NCAA basketball run a few year back. Donations increased.

Kids go to Penn St, Clemson or Auburn for that atmosphere. They are not better academic schools. Michigan is in a different animals. It’s a top academic school.
RU could try recruiting students of wealthy family’s for future donations but it would be easier to recruit better football players and win more games.
