They don't have a case, however I would be upset if they're allowing my number to be used but not Joe Burrow's.

Details are sketchy, but I think there are two separate issues here.

He wants his jersey "soft retired" like Burrows' is. Brian Kelly apparently respected that but Kiffin is not.

Daniel's has no legal recourse to stop Kiffin, so his attorney is telling LSU it can no longer use his NIL in other areas. This could affect LSU promotional materials and merchandising.

Its just a threat, and raises a lot of contract issues. Also ensures his jersey will never be officially retired.

I think Daniel's is an idiot. This will only hurt his brand at least with lsu fans, means more of others will be sold and not his. He could sell his nil but be told not to use lsu in anything.

He’s confusing Offensive #5 with Defensive #5. It’s been established for years that they are totally different numbers except on special teams!
I actually like this approach. Tell Daniel's they won't let another QB wear #5. If Daniel's had gone 15-0 then maybe they stop everyone from using #5.

If you haven't, read the ESPN article. This whole thing is weird. He's threatening to sue because they didn't "retire " his number. What an idiot. Then how can you retire a jersey number but someone else can use it after 2007? So they "retire" it without it being really retired.

I'm on team Daniels here. Retire every number worn by a Heisman winner. If you run out of numbers, too bad. That's your fault for having too many good players. I want to see QBs running around in 37 & 43.

My thing is the number doesn't belong to Daniels. The number/jersey belongs to the university. So if they want to retire it they will. If they don't then they can give it to anyone else. As much as I can't stand TSUN, I like how they use Chucky Mullins jersey. I wish we would do the same with 21 or Nick Bell's number.

Burrows was 25-3 and not only won the Heisman he also won a National Championship and went undefeated to earn his in the same season, end of story.

Daniels was 19-7 AND opted out of his final game. 17 him dry and on a hot day.

I'm no lawyer but how can daniels stop lsu from saying and showing that daniels played at lsu? it's a fact that he played there.

Daniel's was part of the Quarterback on Netflix in season 3. I don't think him and his mother came off that great. Definitely was a travel ball vibe where the kid and parent are more important than the team. This is an extension of that attitude. Being a person that is closer to having a number retired than most people, I think it is something that should be reserved for more than a Heisman winner. Jackie Robinson, Pat Tillman are the type of folks that deserve that sort of honor. Otherwise a ring of honor type thing or hang a jersey is a huge honor that should be enough reverence for what you meant to a team or place.

I heard a clip from Michael Irvin talking about 88 how he loves that the cowboys reserve that number for receiver 1 on the Cowboys. That way every time that Cee Dee catches a ball people can think of him instead of the one shot of showing a jersey hanging during the game. It's alive instead of being put away in a drawer.

I imagine the devil will be in the details of the contracts the athletes are signing with the collectives... and no two schools are probably handling it the same way.

Me thinks, Mr. Daniel has an overblown opinion of his control over LS of U and jersey allotment. If LSU choosing to reissue his uniform number, that’s an LSU call.

Kiffin is also following through with a promise made to a member of his football team that Kelly made and didn't follow through with.

It was Kelly that told the kid that he could wear that number when recruiting him. Kid gets there and then Kelly says no. Kiffin is following through with 'LSUs word' which I respect. Kiffin made the tough decision. Daniel's looks like an A hole.

Yeah compare this to Burrow who helped get his team to and win a NC. Not sat out his last game with LSU.

I mean..he won the Heisman. It’s not some rando.

That said, this is not a good look for him. We’re shifting from an honor to have a jersey retired to “profound disrespect” when it’s not. Seems pretty entitled.

But I won’t be shedding any tears for LSU.
Damn right I sure as hell will shed no tear in my life for them.

When I see 88 I think of Drew Pearson but that’s just me

I love that hit! Screw this Daniels kid

He needs to get his mommy's boob out his mouth and grow a pair. Be grateful for the opportunity. Your were good, but by no means the greatest, and you ain't got the stuff to retire a number.........and this little stunt will bring any future deals to a complete end

I don’t see them retiring another number. If memory serves me correctly, 7 is their 38 although both numbers have different meanings. I’m on LSU’s side on this one and I hope they stand their ground.
At some point, these kids need to be reminded very sternly they are not and will not be the ones calling the shots at the school the chose to attend. That’s for the people in charge at the university, not the athlete.

Lol, he wants LSU's copy...

I hope that isn't true. Im pretty sure the Heisman Trust gives a replica trophy to the school, so it isn't Daniels' property. I guess he could claim its a use of his name so LSU cannot display it...but is LSU supposed to pretend he never played there? Take his name out if the record books and media guides?
