I'm sure a majority of folks would agree with you, at least as far as this being a favorite Metallica album, but to me, this was their jump-the-shark record. I didn't like the new direction at all.

Of course, they did not consult me prior to its recording or release, and so it goes...

I always viewed it as Metallic maturing and growing into a slightly different sound. They weren't the kids or young adults playing only thrash metal anymore. This happens with a lot of band that have significant longevity.

Fun Fact: Metallica and NJ...specifically Old Bridge were instrumental in the early days of the group!

The Old Bridge Metal Militia were (and are) a pack of gregarious headbangers from Old Bridge, New Jersey, who populated all the NYC and NJ metal shows in the 80s. Whenever bands like Metallica, Slayer, Anvil, Mercyful Fate, Exciter or Venom—to name just a few—came to town, the Militia was there in full force. You could find them packing the front of the stage at L’Amour in Brooklyn, at Club 516 in Old Bridge, at the Sunshine Inn in Asbury Park, at the Academy of Music in Manhattan, or almost anywhere in the Tri-State area that heavy metal bands and the burgeoning thrash movement were on display. Jerseyites with names like Metal Joe, Rockin’ Ray, Bulldozer Bob (who became Lars Ulrich’s drum tech), Metal Maria (who has since become a publicist for many prominent metal bands), Jethro, John Boy, Tony Bologna and Party Artie would descend to raise hell, slam beers and bang heads. “Everybody had a nickname back then,” Old Bridge OG Rockin’ Ray Dill tells us. “If you didn’t have a nickname, you were nobody.”

Yeah, I think that's a fair read.

In my own case, it just took them too far from what I enjoyed about Metallica, whose sound was innovative and unique in the earlier years. Then again, there are very few bands whose later sounds I enjoy more then their first few albums. I'm trying to think of a band who, for me, is the exception to that, but offhand, I can't.

I think this is a common criticism and is a bit overstated. In my opinion, there are a significant number of talented and good musical acts out today. Are there a lot of crappy, artificial pop music acts today? Of course. Mainstream pop/rock music has deteriorated but there was some bad pop music back in the 1950s through the 1990s. There are more ways than ever to discover decent music today, people have to make the effort. I’m 68 and there are quite a number of musical acts with younger musicians and singers that I listen to and would pay to hear live.

Incredible album! As a kid, when I was home alone after school, I'd take it from my brothers collection and crank it on my mom's stereo.
