My daughter did this when she was about three. Thankfully we had already taken off, but it was a brutal flight from JFK to DCA. She just decided she didn't want to wear the seatbelt, and there was nothing that could be said or done. Screamed every second she had to have the belt on after takeoff.

Thankfully that flight was quick. She received corrective action in the restroom between flights and was fine on the next leg.

Flight attendants and other passengers around us were great. I think people generally realize that in most of those situations the parents want the kid to stop more than anyone.

Most kids act in public the way they are allowed to act at home. Of course most of us have had our a** spanked for being bad in public so it’s not always the parental figure’s fault, but generally speaking it is. Or the kid is special as they say. That would be the other scenario.

Was on a flight 2 weeks ago where couple of girls behind us were constantly taking off their seat belts. FA would come by and tell them to put them on, then I’d hear them unbuckle soon as she walked away. This happened maybe 10 times. I’m thinking they must be really young. So finally get a good look when the plane lands and they’re at least 12/13. Worst part is their mom was in the row behind them the whole flight.

Literally nobody wants the child quiet more than the parents! I'm thankful for noise cancelling headphones.

Humans knew the truth 3,000 years ago and even wrote it down for us:

"He who spares the rod hates his son;
but one who loves his son will take care to discipline him."
- Proverbs 13:24

We've just forgotten.

when I was in public, unable to disciple as desired, I would grab my kids by the ear lobe and slowly pinch and twist until I got their attention.

poor kid
