Mississippians definitely love to spend their money out of state, that's for sure. From vacation (which I understand) to basic shopping. NW corner goes to Memphis, Tupelo/Starkville folks go to Birmingham, Coast folks go to Mobile or New Orleans. Central MS go to Jacktown but they hate it and constantly run it down.

I went to church once when I had moved back to Jackhole. They showed a video of the "missionary" from there who was heading up a church plant in...........Denver. I remember thinking man, that guy is roughing it, huh. Of course he was asking for support and all that. Think about that for a second.......residents of the poorest state and the worst urban metro area in the country, donating money to............ Denver, Colorado, one of the most desirable areas of the country.

This dude literally convinced the most charitable folks in the country to subsidize his move out of state. Now that's talent.

Call me a heretic all you want, but the whole “church planting” trend of the past 10-15 years was always a bit strange to me.

There was a girl that was some old acquaintance of my wife. She was like 24, already had 4 young kids, neither her nor the dad really worked much, were living in trailer or an apartment, and she was seeking out funding for planting a church in the Huntsville area….which certainly has no shortage of places to worship.

I’m thinking, “Shouldn’t ya’ll maybe focus on building a foundation for your children before trying to branch out into a major endeavor like that?” Of course, there’s a chance that it could have been a con, who knows.

It seems to me that most people called to plant a church are called into affluent growing areas that already have a bunch of churches. Build in the path of growth, get a good band and a dynamic speaker who mostly preaches shiny happy Christianity and fill it up in short order.

First time I ever heard of it was when I was 8 or so, and some dude was going to plant a church in Whitefish, MT

If you know anyone that actually does development for churches or 501-c3’s they’ll tell you support raising to places like Hawaii is extremely difficult. People naturally think, they’re already in paradise, why do they need help? Much easier to raise funds for works in poor places. Plus, the cost of living to be in Ittabena County is a small percentage of what it takes to live in Boulder, CO. Little wonder most of those projects fail.

But yeah this is why I stick with denominations. At least they are honest about needing money. Nondenominational churches are all about some guy. Like @horshack.sixpack said. Churches need money, I get it. But at least there is a system.

Some N-Ds are okay though. Just takes a lot of discernment.

Just to add to our situation. This last round of storms took out a couple of cameras that were trying to replace and currently on a new install pause until funding dictates otherwise. Evidently, some of our cameras have been imitating Lieutenant Dan on top of the shrimp boat during the hurricane.

When we first moved out to Colorado, we joined an Acts 29 church for a hot minute because we were young and **hip** and the church was **cool** and had a really chill preacher. Mainly, the other members were our age and demographic (read- white, transplants, networking). It didn't take long to suss it out.

They do a lot of bland talking about their beliefs while avoiding as much as possible what their core tenets are. We didn't agree with those once we nailed the "co-preachers" down on them. It was very scammy and felt a lot like being pulled into a MLM.

We eventually started going to an established older church once we figured out where we were going to live.
