He came to Doubleday Farms (it was a field of Dreams outside of Loysville) the week after he was at an all star game. He was not very friendly at all. I got a hit off of him my first at bat. The 2nd at bat he was not happy about me getting a hit and proceeded to show me up. I didn't celebrate in any way. Afterwards he didn't want to talk to the guys who paid to play and hang out with a major leaguer.
My friend and I were on the owners list for whenever he needed players to field full teams, so I met and played with a bunch of guys like rickey jordan, Mickey morandini, greg luzinski, doc ellis, Don Robinson, manny sanguillen and a few others. Tommy was the only one who was not fun and didn't sit around and tell us stories.

I used to bowhunt a farm just down the road from there. Drove by many times. Always regretted never stopping and visiting. It looked awesome and was a really cool idea. Would have been fun to participate.
Whatever became of it?

The owner had been in baseball so he had connections to get players, but his wife ran the business side. They split up and he quit doing it.

Great story. Would be a dream come true.
I keep envisioning Kramer’s fight with Joe Pepitone though.

I'm thinking he definitely DOES. They guy had 288 career wins. Who among this generation has 300 career wins? The three active MLB pitchers with the most career wins are:

1. Justin Verlander - 266
2. Max Scherzer - 222
3. Gerrit Cole - 159. (Note the drop off from #2 to #3.)

Clayton Kershaw, who just retired and is widely considered a lock for the Hall, has 223 career wins. With modern day pitching rotations going to 5 starters rather than 4 and relievers coming in much earlier than they used to, the difficulty of amassing 300 career wins has increased significantly.

Just because I’m currently stuck on a school bus transporting me to the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, the record is 511 wins, Cy Young.

You cannot compare his stats to pitchers today. Starting pitching will never be what it once was. 288 - 231 overall. Interesting the most complete games he had in a season was 17. Measured against other pitchers from that era, it seems low. For example Catfish Hunter in 1975 had 30 complete games. I'll bet there won't be 30 complete games in MLB this year (currently the number is 17). Being in my mid-60's I never thought of Tommy John as a HOF pitcher.

Low? Seventeen (17) games in a season was a whole LOT even back then.. That occurred in 1979, and it placed him 4th in MLB. He had 16 complete games in 1980 and it again placed him 4th in MLB. He had 162 for his career. Catfish Hunter had 181. But then again, Catfish Hunter won only 224 games to Tommy John's 288 and Hunter is in the Hall.

You are right about starting pitching metrics having changed, and it was largely due to MLB going from 4 man rotations to 5 man rotations, and the increased use of middle relievers. Clayton Kershaw had 25 complete games in his entire career. The most complete games Kershaw ever threw in a single season is 6, a milestone he reached during his historic 2014 season. That year, Kershaw delivered one of the most dominant modern pitching campaigns in MLB history, leading the major leagues in complete games while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Over 27 starts, he went 21-3 with a 1.77 ERA, earning both the National League Cy Young Award and the NL Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award.
